As you enter there is a sign over the door saying “170 years as a hotel.” The old girl is showing her age.
The hygiene is good, laundered sheets and towels are also good and the reception area and dinning room nicely decorated.
I always look at the bed room carpets, they are always an indicator of the hotels cleanliness, and they were good in our parties rooms.
What lets it down is the decor in the bed rooms. The rooms have all the facilities you expect in a hotel but there was signs of paint damage on the ceilings as a result of damp. Generally the rooms decor looks tired.
The best part of our stay was the breakfast. The worst parts was the lack of a lift, especially like us if you are on the 3rd floor. The Bar area strangely does not feel like it should be part of such a grand building, it had more of a working man’s club feel.
Overall, value for money, it’s fair.
