Our check in at reception was good with Thomas. There was also a lady there a lot of the time who was also friendly & helpful. Our suite lacked TLC. It was clean & bed comfortable with a stunning view. It was modern & bright with a nice lounge. Unfortunately the wardrobes looked like a builder had made them. Very basic. Inside was a fridge that didnt work too. The TV in the lounge pixilated a lot so was impossible to watch. The TV in the bedroom was ok. I would suggest the venetian blinds need dusting. The wall clock that was an art deco theme needed a new battery & the balcony lacked appeal by looking tired & did not match the ambiance offered for such a stunning view. The bathroom was nicely decorated but the controls for shower / bath are on the far side so you had to lean over the kidney shaped bath to operate. The double sinks could be filled without the plug in & the bath took ages to drain. There must be an issue with drains. We had half board one night & b/b another whilst eating from the alacarte menu in a different restaurant within the hotel. The half board meal was basic & rather like school dinners. On ordering 2 glasses of wine, when they were brought to the table the waitress insisted on payment there & then whilst we were eating ! The alacarte was totally different. The food was stunning & the waiter was polite & courtious ( l dont know his name but he was a young Indian guy who came to UK about 3 months ago. The hotel charge ebooker clients £12 a day park

They upgraded me to a king room with partial ocean view. I had a very relaxing stay. Got to sip my cappuccino and watch the sunrise over the sea from my room. It is Christmas party season so I do recommend checking ahead with the hotel as all of the Oceana Hotels on the East Cliff are booked with Christmas parties at the weekends. This means that their hotel restaurants are not open to hotel guests in the evening. I am not sure about lunch, but I do believe they are still serving breakfast.

The staff were very accommodating. Breakfast was good with a vast choice. The hallways were dreary and there was some repair work needed in the bedroom and front needs a paint to keep it to a standard. The parking system was frustrating and we had to park on street and get up early to move the car. I feel management should really look into this as I heard two other guests complaining. We had a good stay, but for over £200 a night I would have expected it to be of a higher standard.

Not a 4 star and not clean

The staff were friendly (except for one waiter who didn’t want to seat us because it was getting close to kitchen closure time). Perhaps it would have been better if he didn’t as the food was pretty poor! Drinks are expensive too. The room we were given was above the noisy and smelly kitchen vents, so we asked to move. They were very accommodating to our request, but the second room smelled of vomit, so we settled for one by the fire escape (which a member of staff used for smoking at one point). The room was stuffy, but we were provided with a fan. The cleaning staff were terrible. We found rubbish from previous guests on the floor, hairs on the pillows, dead insects on the walls (and they remained there for our 4 night stay), toiletries were replenished but the empty ones were left in the room (we had quite a collection by the end of our 4 night stay). Common areas are reasonably nice, but again not cleared of glasses and rubbish. We didn’t use the pool, but it didn’t look particularly inviting and appeared to be undergoing repairs.

Celebrating our Big Birthday

Location: About 15 minutes from Bournemouth pier. On sea front. Always a good idea to check on trip advisor for attractions in the area
We are two ladies celebrating a birthday with a nought on the end. We wanted somewhere between Cambridge and Cornwell and decided Bournemouth would suit. We wanted to stay somewhere with a bit of character rather than a chain. The Cumberland was one of three hotels which we had access to, which meant we didn't have to go far for a choice if food as each hotel offered a range of choices. There was spa and swimming available but we didn't actually find time to use them. Staff were helpful. Hotel was comfortable. Room was acceptable. Bed was comfortable. Hotel was approximately 15 minute walk to Bournemouth (there is a bus right outside). Food was excellent and definitely worth trying. I would definitely stay again.

All that glitters is not gold!

Pros: Public areas and pool area
Cons: Rooms need urgent upgrade
Location: A cliff slide demolished the cliff lift and the only way down to the beach is via a zig zag which is difficult with kids and for the elderly.
Excellent public areas and lovely swimming pool. Food was booked half board and we were pleasantly surprised at the quality and standard. The bar food was equally enjoyable. There is one lift which holds only three people. Very poor for a hotel of this size. The first room offered was very dingy and we were then offered an upgrade (at a fee). This was declined and the second room was just about adequate. This overlooked the back parking lot and garden. The very small window was dressed with a grey smelly net curtain in need of a good wash. All the furnishings were very ancient and the bed hard as a rock and possibly also very old. The bathroom had the required facilities but a rubber pull out plug in both bath and washbasin denoting its age.. The room decor was very depressing, with one wall having a brick design paper making it feel like a prison. The mainly non UK staff were friendly and helpful. Summary: Outward appearance excellent but rooms disappointing.
