Lovely surroundings with nice walks and places of interest. I suspect the popularity has reduced the affordable options in the immediate area from accommodation, through to dining and spontaneous stops at cafes etc. Pretty much as expected, although personally I think overpriced for what you receive.

Reasonable overall - food excellent.
Stayed as a couple for family function. We know Melrose very well and have stayed at the G&A before. Above all it is good value and has a certain charm The food is its greatest feature and always pleasantly surprises us with its quality and value for money. Dinner and breakfast are very hard to beat. However, if you want top comfort you’ll need to pay more and stay elsewhere. There is still a certain charm but it badly needs renovation.

The bar staff were friendly is the only positive!
Where to start? There’s no lift so we had to carry a pushchair up 3 flights of stairs every time we got back from anywhere The room was ok but not particularly clean and the bed was far too soft to get comfortable in Stayed for 2 nights and room wasn’t turned down after night 1, which isn’t too big an issue, but you’d think they would top up your coffees and bring clean mugs?!? Only 2 caffeinated coffee sachets in the room and about 10 decafs! Breakfast was a shambles! Too many tables crammed into a tiny room so everyone was on top of each other. Not enough bread and coffee put out so they ran out every 5 minutes and had to go for more. No vegetarian options on the very limited menu so asked if they could just do a fried egg on toast each for the wife and I. Half an hour later asked where our food was and was told the large table have all ordered full breakfasts so they’re cooking those first?!? I wasn’t expecting anything exceptional when I booked this place but some level of hospitality experience / ability is the least you expect when booking a hotel. Definitely won’t be staying here again!

It’s a maze to get to your room, we opened the door to a stale smell and a room full of spiders and cobwebs. The staff were friendly and cleaned it out after but it wasn’t very pleasant. very basic room. Also they don’t offer multiple items on their drink menu which can be quite confusing. Parking was nice though.

Stay was excellent. It was clean,friendly and good value. Food was excellent. Just a word of warning. If someone in your party has mobility problems then you would need to contact the hotel in good time to arrange a suitable room. There is no lift and a lot of stairs.

Great value, nice hotel with character. Very pleasant staff. Good location in town centre with ample parking. Excellent choice of menu for dinner and also breakfast. On the whole, a really good place to stay in the Borders.

It’s a hard one the hotel is very tired but the bedding and towels are pristine We had a fabulous nights sleep bed was so comfortable and shower pressure was good
