Lovely old building, not kept very well. Room we had was small and a bit shabby, big country club that felt a bit like a Bupa hospital - no sauna or steam room. There was a bar and snooker room but not much else there.

Location and the exterior of the hotel is great and staff is generally very polite. But 2 things made this particular stay a bit disappointing. 1) one goes away from London for a weekend getaway to eat well and potentially take some spa treatments. For this stay there wasn’t any spa treatments available when checking a couple of days ahead of arriving. That’s something one can live with I guess, but that one has to eat dinner sitting in a lounge sofa instead of in the restaurant is beyond bad. Hugely disappointing if one has planned a trip to celebrate a birthday. 2) while polite, the staff wasn’t very attentative and there were some big gaps in basic knowledge about the hotel. Eg when asking where the spa facilities were, the reply was “I’m not sure, but I know it is a different building from this one” without offering to check or referring to colleague who would know. Seemed like the staff were a bit stressed which might be more about management issues than the staff themselves.

All started well, with a really good professional reception from the front of house staff on check in. We then attended a pre-lunch champagne reception with canapes, the champagne which was served from the tray on entry to the room but the canapes were just put on a tray on a table and not served, leaving a guest to take the initiative and offer them to others, as many were unaware they were there. Lunch was served and every body agreed it was of good quality but was served tepid not the hot roast lunch that was expected. Wine was provided following the initial serving. It was served in chaotic way, with the staff topping up one glass and then leaving the table without asking others if they required more. The desert was fine with good service. The coffee that followed was of good quality but some people were missed and had to request service. The room was excellent, clean, tidy and well appointed as one would expect with a very comfortable bed with a turn back service. Breakfast I can only describe as chaotic with a very slow service. A request for poached eggs resulted in waiting over half an hour for their delivery to table, coffee was delivered cold. It was very disappointing, as without doubt this is a top establishment. Having considered all, I would say that it is individual and staff team training that is required within the catering department. The Hotel is a lovely place to stay, I am therefore sorry that I have to report this experience as it was.

Beautiful one-night stay

Pros: The rooms, the staff and the overall atmosphere
Cons: My only complaint was that the rooms were dark and I found it very difficult to read in the evening
Location: Lovely to go to Ashdown Forest and walk in the steps of Winnie the Pooh
From the moment that we arrived the staff could not have been more friendly and helpful. The rooms were beautifully decorated and were spotlessly clean. The beds were very comfortable and there was nothing lacking. The breakfast was delicious and again all the staff were very attentive but not over the top. I only wish that we had had more time to extend our stay.

Excellent stay

Location: Forrest location. The Llama Park in walking distance was a great experience. We got to feed many different animals, great fun!
Very nice setting. View on the garden was superb. Enjoyed walking in the forest and mini-golf!
