Just come back from a lovely weekend at the Makeney Hall hotel, overall I would rate it 8/10. Hotel clean and tidy, staff went the extra mile, bar area lovey - drinks and food Was amazing - not at all pricey! We stayed in the courthouse area - bit noisy - rooms very close together, bed was a bit to hard and woke to a dog barking in the next room - that was the only thing that let the visit down. Looking forward to re visiting this hotel :)

Comfortable property and good value rooms in a nice setting. Friendly staff. Would say some of the furniture and fittings a little bit tired, but well maintained and spotlessly clean. No issues and would stay again.

The property has plenty of character and it is set in a beautiful location. The backdrop at breakfast looking out over the gardens and beyond is stunning. The room itself was okay and was clean. The carpet in the bedroom though, and the bathroom suite is very tired. I paid for an upgrade to a Business room. This was situated directly above a function room that was hosting weddings on both nights of my stay. The loud music finished at midnight and things didn’t fully wind down until past 1am. Not ideal if you are on business or want to get an early night. I certainly wouldn’t pay for the upgrade option again. The breakfast was okay. An okay selection, but cheap products. I would also suggest that Radio 1 isn’t the most suitable of soundtracks to eat your breakfast to, and didn’t really feel in keeping with the feel of the conservatory and it’s stunning backdrop. On the whole an okay stay.

Lovely place, only thing that let it down was the bar service during the afternoon.

Notice at night from functions.

Pros: The food was really good. The hotel is situated in a lovely area.
Cons: Speak to their customers ahead of bookings should there be functions book that might impact on their stay.
Location: Close to Matlock, Belper and Bakewell - areas with loads of history.
Lovely situation in the peaks. We found the food excellent and the room satisfactory. If you are looking for a quiet hotel then this hotel may not be for you. There were three functions during the two nights we stayed and due to noise from music we were unable to fall asleep before 12 midnight. Our room was alongside one of the function rooms. The hotel needs to made an effort to let customers know of these functions ahead of their visit and as we were looking for a quiet weekend with good quality sleep, our weekend was spoiled by this. When we raised this issue on check in/out it was not really acknowledged as one would expect and we left feeling that there was very limited balance between function guests and couples on their own. An example of this was that the restaurant was closed for a function on the Saturday night and we were advised to use the drawing room although and in the same breath we were advised that function guests may use this room and that there may be limited space. As the 24 hour menu was available in the drawing room, this led to us ordering room service for which we were charged for the use of this service although the drawing room, which should have been available to us, was in reality not available. Sadly while the overall experience was fairly good the above spoiled our weekend. If you are after a quiet venue then perhaps before booking it may be worth your while in phoning to ensure that your stay will not be interrupted by load music.
