Currently, Berlin is served by two airports: Tegel International and Schönefeld. These will be replaced in 2013 by the newly constructed Berlin Brandenburg Airport. Tegel handles most of the city's international traffic and is located approximately five miles from the centre of Berlin. It's served by many major airlines, including Lufthansa and British Airways. Schönefeld sits 11 miles from the city centre and was formerly the only airport servicing East Berlin. Of the two, it sees much less traffic and caters more toward budget airlines, like easyJet.

Transportation in the Capital

While serviced by bus, taxi and rental car terminals, Tegel airport is not connected to the train. The Tegel train depot runs to the neighbourhood of the same name, and is quite a distance from the airport. However, you can take JetExpress TXL bus, X9 express bus, or the 109 or 128 bus lines to a U-Bahn or S-Bahn underground train terminal. A one-way bus ticket costs €2, while a 20 minute taxi ride from Tegel to downtown Berlin costs €15. From Schönefeld, you can take the X7 bus for day connections to the U-Bahn terminal at Rudow, and the N7 bus at night. In addition, you can take the RE AirportExpress Train directly from the airport to the centre of Berlin. S-Bahn lines S9 and S45 are also just a short walk from the airport. Rides from Schönefeld cost €2 by bus or €23 by taxi.

Berlin enjoys a cool climate which is pleasant to visit at most times of the year. While you'll need a jacket throughout April, summers generally reach to 25°C. Winters can dip into single digits, tending to be the slowest time for tourism for this reason, and rain is prevalent throughout the year.
