A Night in a Homestead

The Glacier County Historical Museum, 45-minutes from Glacier National Park, offers you an authentic experience in our reproduction 1917 Maltby Homestead. This is historical tiny living at its best - no frills, just history. Only 8’ x 20,’ the homestead has a full-size bed, wood stove, dry sink, table and chairs. Oil lamps provide light at night. A historian-led tour and discussion is included. A full breakfast is served in the morning.

A historian will meet guests at the homestead for a discussion bringing you into the world of a homesteader. How did a homesteader get free land? What did a typical homesteader raise for crops? Learn about washing clothes using a stone boat, copper boiler, rapid washer, and washtub- and the five mile quest for water. Were all homestead houses this small? Your guide will show you the operation of the woodstove. You may use the woodstove for heating if necessary or to make coffee or tea. Try your hand grinding coffee beans in the grinder.

Come early and have a tour of the museum buildings. The museum grounds will be yours to wander after hours.

Our shower and restroom facility is located a short walk away. Battery-operated lantern will be provided for after-dark visits.

This was as close to the homestead experience as city slickers like us are likely to get. The cabin is small, tidy, authentic and, naturally, has no air conditioner, TV, refrigerator, etc. The shower/toilet are 75 yards away across the prairie grass. The hosts who run it (and the adjoining county museum) are friendly and accommodating. The director is passionate and knowledgeable about history, but not entirely sensitive to the exhaustion and time constraints of weary travelers. Perhaps he could ask the guests upon arrival if they want the 15 minute, 30 minute, or 2 hour talk, or no talk at all and simply the provide the opportunity to explore the museum and grounds independently.
