About this property

Church Hill Farm beautiful property in the Lower Wye Valley set in 63 acres

Main House normally sleeps 8/9. There is a small study room with a single bed ideal for children as it links to the double bedroom downstairs. Large luxury farmhouse kitchen set in 63 acres, four bedrooms, study, dining room, living room, satellite TV. Wood burning stoves. Gorgeous views and total privacy.

We also have a new barn conversion (Property no 8209067) which can accommodate a further four people.

All kitchen equipment, linen, towels, heating and wood for fires included. Complete privacy and gorgeous views.

Perched on the edge of the hill with beautiful views across the Wye Valley to the Forest of Dean, sits the very private luxury farmhouse Church Hill Farm and the new barn conversion just below. Hidden away, over half a mile from the nearest road, the property is surrounded by its own land and overlooks the picturesque 11th Century Penallt Old Church. Behind the house ancient woodland provides a perfect backdrop. Deer, badger, foxes, and rabbits roam throughout the property, and the sounds of songbirds fill the air in spring. Buzzards soar in the air above the hill, and at dusk, if you listen carefully, you will hear the sound of bats chattering as they wake up for their evening foray into the air to catch insects.

Just five miles from Monmouth, the location offers a huge variety of different options for the perfect holiday break. The Lower Wye Valley, an area of outstanding natural beauty, is literally on your doorstep. If you like walking, you can leave your car at home and explore the local area on foot.

Monmouth and the immediate area are within fifteen minutes. Without getting in the car you can go on one of a number of specially worked out circular or longer distance walks. En route you will see spectacular views, ancient buildings, old churches, miles of old stone walls, and peek into the gardens of the pretty cottages that are dotted throughout the countryside.

The town of Monmouth itself sits at the mouth of the Monnow where it meets the Wye. It is a picturesque and interesting place with a number of sites well worth a visit including the famous covered bridge, the castle, St Mary's Church, Agincourt Square and an attractive main street with a good selection of shops and a market in the square on Fridays and Saturdays.

There is a good leisure centre, two excellent golf courses and a canoe centre. Nearby are any number of interesting castles - Raglan, Whitecastle, Goodrich, Chepstow and Caldicot castles, and the very famous Tintern Abbey.

Day Trips in the area: Slightly further afield (12 miles) lies Abergavenny and beyond Hay on Wye. The back road from Llanvihangel Crucorney, home of the oldest pub in Wales, The Skirrid Inn, to Hay on Wye, is one of the most lovely rides in the country. The single track road winds slowly up the Black Mountains past the spectacular ruins of Llanthony Priory, through Capel-y-Ffin up to the top of Hay bluff. The view from the top of the bluff offers a 360 degree perspective for miles across three counties and is one of the most exhilarating in Wales. When the weather conditions are right you can watch the paragilders literally throwing themselves off the bluff to circle the hill or soar away across the countryside when air currents permit. At nearby Crickhowell there are a number of paragliding schools where the adventurous can learn to fly.To the east is the fascinating Forest of Dean. This is the largest forest in England and offers some beautiful walks and cycle trails as well as being steeped in history.

A really peaceful retreat nestled in beautiful countryside
Exactly what we were looking for! Ample space inside for 9 people and one dog. We’re a family who love all things outdoors, so location was perfect. Even the very steep walk down to the pub didn’t put us off. Great kitchen, table outside and charcoal bbq (we didn’t use the dining room). Enjoyed watching Paris 2024 in the lounge in the evenings.

Beautiful cottage in stunning countryside
We thoroughly enjoyed a week at church hill farm. Set in a secluded spot with lovely walks from the door. Close enough to all amenities and everything else the Forest of Dean has to offer. Perfect !

Perfect place for a family holiday
We have just spent a very happy week here. Ideal for our three generation extended family, with everything we could have wanted thought of and provided for us. Small people thrilled by the deer standing in the driveway, and the owls at bedtime. We'd love to come again!

Fab place
A little tricky finding, but once we had we were very pleased! The track is uneven but we drove carefully and it was fine. The house is very well equipped. We comfortably slept 10 people in the house without being on top of each other. The perfect location for exploring!

Excellent accommodation, really well equipped, warm and comfortable. Fabulous situation.
This is a place for walks, sunshine, bbqs and a good book. We had it all. We thought the dining room was surplus to requirements and would have made a lovely, second sitting room - especially for families with several children if the weather is inclement - which it wasn't for our stay. The owners are the hosts with the most - everything provided - but they are in no way intrusive. It's a house with THE most glorious views.

Fifth half term visit with daughter’s and grandchildren
Ideally situated in a remote part of Monmouthshire but within a good walks distance or short drive to the county town. Lovely well equiped, warm farmhouse with all facilities to make your holiday enjoyable, even wild deer roaming free outside the house the family went on several “Gruffalo Hunts” !

great cottage but a little remote.
This venue worked very well for our eight person walking group. The remoteness was not a major issue for us but the track to it does require some attention. The facilities were excellent and we were able to find everything we needed.

Lovely house, home from home
Adult Family party of 8 stayed and everyone was very impressed with the level of comfort and facilities. Its often the little things that stand out and so was the case here, great bathroom toiletries, everything you need in the kitchen including a large fridge/freezer, lots of towels. Super location and views. Couldn't fault the place and we shall be back. Watch out for the approach track though, some places REALLY rough and could be improved dramatically by just taking away a few large, embedded rocks and backfilling. Hence only the 4 stars rather than 5. But it is the only holiday house my wife has stayed in that she says she would live in... and that's quite a compliment !.

A wonderful week in an idyllic location - can't fault it
Church Hill Farm is a lovely, comfortable and well equipped property in the most stunning location, surrounded by woods, wildlife and the most beautiful views across the Wye Valley. This is our second stay here, and we wouldn't hesitate to come again. Christine and Max make you very welcome. As well as the wonderful countryside on your doorstep it is a great place to stay to access activities in South Wales and the Forest of Dean. We enjoyed the Brecon Mountain Railway, Tredegar House, canoeing on the Wye and visiting the International Bird of Prey Centre. And the children were delighted to be able to build on the legacy of last summer's den and explore the woods around the house.

Quite Place to stay
We stayed at the Church Hill Farm from the 4th of August to the 11th of August 17. Our host met us and showed us round explaining the layout and running of the property. It is a beautiful cottage with a lovely view although some of the trees could be cut back so as to see more of the view. The Kitchen was superb and we loved cooking with the Aga and very well equipped you want for nothing. Lovely big Living Room and Dining Room both with a fantastic fire place. All Bedrooms a great size as were the Bathrooms and although we didn't use the shampoo, shower gel's etc. there was plenty if you run short or forgot. The only down side to the property on a personal note was there was only one television so everyone had to watch the same thing which could at times caused discussion, another one or two would have been great as we had teenagers staying and not everyone likes the same.

Perfect for hiking!
The house is wonderfully large and was well appointed for the 8 adults in our group. It's remote, but is surrounded by fantastic hiking. We used the fire place inside, and then BBQ'd outside when the weather warmed up! We all had a great time.

Lovely house in a beautiful setting
We had a lovely few days at Church Hill Farm. The house is very well laid out and was great for the six of us. The kitchen is big, with an Aga and plenty of cooking space and a table for eight. Although just fifteen minutes from Monmouth it is totally peaceful with lovely walks and lots of wildlife - and a good Wifi signal should you need it.

Gorgeous secluded location. Especially at this time of year when the bluebells surround the place.
Perfect for any group who want a peaceful getaway. There are numerous great walks rights from the front door where you don't meet a single road which we loved. The aga and log fires were a nice bonus.

Beautiful old house in lovely, peaceful location
We had a great week at Church Hill Farm. The owners were very helpful, the property was comfortable, spacious and exceptionally well maintained. We were a family of 7 with additional day visitors and never felt crowded. The location near Monmouth is perfect - handy for shops, cafes etc but very quiet with lots of nice walks from house. We had fabulous weather and saw the beautiful scenery at its very best - we all hope to stay here again!

A lovely house in a perfect, peaceful location
We had a super stay at Church Hill farm, with 4 adults and 3 children in the party. The house is well equipped and very comfortable, and provided everything as described, and more. The only ambiguity in the listing concerned the study which provided the 9th bed - I had not picked up that the downstairs bedroom and shower room were accessed through this study, so it might limit it's use as a bedroom depending on the make-up of your party. It didn't affect us but would have done if our full intended party of 9 had been there. The owners were welcoming and provided excellent support and service during our stay. We loved the woods and grounds of the farm - the children had lots of fun exploring and building a den (and looking for the gruffalo holes!). Access to activities and places of interest was easy - we canoed on the Wye, walked trails in the Forest of Dean and visited castles and historic sites in Wales as well as the International Centre for Birds of Prey at Newent. All in all it was a brilliant holiday, and we would definitely recommend the property.

What a lovely stay
We stayed in this house for two nights to celebrate my girlfriend's 30th birthday. There were 8 people (4 couples);the rooms were perfect, the location has great views and the owners were very approachable. I would highly recommend this venue if you have eight or nine person party.
