A piece of art ready to be showcased to Alaska visitors! Owner, Johney Engle uses his artistic talent to create amazing kitchens for homeowners. He opened, what is still, the only stone fabrication shop from Surrey British Columbia to Anchorage Alaska, in 1985. He built his home and shop here with pride, branding it with custom rock and other 3-dimensional art pieces throughout. Your private MIL apartment is no exception and host Johney will help you have a local Alaska experience! If you like the outdoors, you'll love the trails and fishing spots within walking distance. There are many fun, excursions a mile away at Statter harbor at Auke Bay, including kayaking and whale watching. Johney has provided a host of visitor experience materials for you to peruse, and is there to point you in the right direction for the experiences you're looking for. You'll have full use of your own private one bedroom apartment with king sized bed and private exterior entrance. Your private space has a 3/4 bathroom. It includes a luxury shower, separate toilet room and vanity room which also hosts the dual washer and dryer unit for your convenience. The space has a living room with a comfortable LaZ Boy queen sized sleeper sofa, kitchenette with a toaster oven, hot plate for countertop cooking, dishwasher, toaster, and coffee pot. There is plenty of off street parking. This apartment is on the second floor, so you'll have to climb one set of steps to get to the entry door. Once inside, it's all on one level. The shop is situated directly below the Shangri-La with operations from 8am to 4:30 pm Monday through Friday. Shop noise can be heard from your unit.

Shangri-La is a private apartment with its own exterior access, bordering the Tongass National Forest and in close proximity to Auke Lake, Auke Bay, and the famous Mendenhall Glacier. It's the perfect base for an adventurous Juneau visit with lots of local flare. You can rent fishing poles and bicycles on site for use within close proximity to Shangri-La. A luxury shower room with high efficiency dual washer/dryer, large utility counter, sink and toilet room, separate the bedroom and main private living area. An artist had a dream and he's inviting you to enjoy it. This is an experience, not just a place to stay. You'll be thrilled and inspired. Shangri-La stories will be told as you recant your Alaska vacation memories into the future. Johney is passionate and fun. His work is unique. It's edgy, and it's hard-core. Much of his art is three-dimensional, assemblage style. Johney figured out that he could make kitchens into art, so he studied rock shops around the country, created his own tools, and opened his stone fabrication shop in the garage of his home in 1999. Johney's eye for the perfect rock and design to match his customer's personality landed him on the cover of Southeast Living Magazine. He's a classic entrepreneur, turning one sale into another tool, and eventually he built built his shop in the back, and expanded the home around it until a masterpiece was created, and ready to share with you. Self-portraiture by late Skylar Engle is displayed throughout the property. These two Engle's have produced brilliant art, with outstandingly contrasting styles to interest you.

It's self check-in so late arrival is not a problem. You'll be given the lock box code a few days prior to your arrival.

Check-in is at 4pm and check out is at 11am. We will offer you early check-in and late check-out options if it's available, a couple days before your arrival/departure for a fee of $50.

You can check yourself in via a lock box at your private entrance, but Johney is available if you need him as well. He'll leave you alone, or interact, at whatever level you desire. Kelli is close by and easy to get ahold of by phone or messaging.

We will strive to provide the best customer service and improve as we go with feedback from our guests. We hope to earn your five-star review. Your expectations should be limited to what is promised here, and reviews should reflect how we did with these promises. Before submitting your review, please remember to base it on the following criteria and what was promised to be provided for the price paid as follows:

Easy check-in process – You'll be able to self-check in. Kelli will give you check-in details prior to arrival, including a lock box code. You'll be able to access the rental at your leisure after check-in time, at 4pm. We offer early check-in options, if it's available a couple days prior to your arrival for $25-$50, depending on your arrival time.

Great Communication – Kelli is known to be responsive to guests before, during, and after their stay. You can expect prompt responses to your questions. She'll respond to web site messages as soon as she can.

Clean Accommodations – Your private apartment should be sparkling clean.

Great Auke Bay/Back Loop Location – It's steps from the city bus stop and three miles from the famous Mendenhall Glacier. You can take the bus, which stops one mile away from the glacier. You can also rent a bike, available at the property, and get to the glacier and Auke bay on trails, bike paths, and short sections of road with shoulder/bike lane. This is not a downtown Juneau property. Downtown Juneau is substantially more expensive than the Mendenhall Valley, so this location for the price should not be compared to that of downtown. If you want to be downtown, and don't want to take a 45 minute bus ride to go 16 miles, then this space is not for you.

Accurate Description of the space - I try to make continuous improvements when guests make suggestions and do my best to keep the changes updated and published. If I missed something please let me know, so I can update the information. If you are missing something you were counting on, please let me know immediately, so I can try to provide it for your stay.

Great Value – Juneau is expensive, especially during peak season, and while this is a more affordable option, we understand that it can seem expensive. Part of the value is the ability to rent for only one night and have an additional person. The price fluctuates depending on the season. We have to charge more when the business is there, so that we can afford to have it vacant for long, slow periods.

Clean and as described, see below for detailed review
When we arrived at the unit the property management team was still cleaning due to a late check out and staff injury. They were nice and we decided to come back after a grocery run. They were still finishing up when we got back and gave us a full tour of the property including the adjoining units that could be rented together. It was clean and had everything as promised in the listing. I gave 5 stars since it was as advertised. This unit would be better for someone looking for a place to sleep versus a couple celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary. It did not have the kinds of comfort amenities we are used to. There is not a true living room, just a space in the kitchen area with a couch surrounded by mirrors. There is no stove but plenty of ways to cook food with 2 toaster ovens, microwave and hot plates. The refrigerator was big and clean. So many cupboards. The layout is really awkward like the space was used for some other purpose in the past. There are mirrors and granite everywhere in the unit including the shower tiles. The bed is high up with 6 full length mirrors for the headboard and has steps to get up to it. The only seating for eating are metal bar stools at the island in the kitchen and interestingly in the bedroom with no cushions. There were zebra striped cushions on a wicker couch in the bedroom we used for the stools. We've nicknamed this place the man cave. If we were in our 20's or 30's we would have loved it. As a couple in our 50's we could have used more comfort and less mirrors.
