Peaceful Year-around Escape to Hot Springs, NC on the French Broad River!

A few minutes from the small town of Hot Springs, NC, Red Gate Cottage is a world away from everyday cares. From the cottage you hear the constant, soothing music of the French Broad River. The home, newly completed, is designed to take advantage of its setting with river views (each main room has them along with 2 screened porches and flagstone patio) and the glorious sunsets over the river and surrounding mountains. The family scoured antique shops to add to the vintage and eclectic collection of family treasures. It is a restful, relaxing retreat, built with love.

House overview:

Entry - A stone path with steps along garden beds in front of the cottage will take you from the parking area to the entry door on the opposite side of the home. A keypad has been installed on the entry door for your convenience.

Kitchen - The kitchen is well-stocked in this new home and a joy to work in. Plenty of dishware, cookware, and utensils await along with modern appliances. A drip coffee maker is available for your use along with an electric tea kettle. The kitchen also has a dishwasher, microwave, toaster oven, and slow cooker. A stash of coffee, sugar, and a few spices will be available to guests as well.

Bedroom and bathroom(downstairs) - The downstairs bedroom is situated off of the kitchen and includes queen-sized bed, plenty of light, and a private, screened sitting porch that you may never want to leave. The ensuite bathroom includes a custom shower and separate soaking tub.

Bedroom and bathroom (upstairs) - The upstairs master bedrooms has a queen-sized bed and even better view over the river from the upstairs windows. The ensuite bathroom has a custom walk-in shower, toilet and sink.

Twin "loft" bedroom (upstairs) - At the top of the stairs, you will find a spacious room with 2 twin beds and a desk looking out towards the river. This has an ensuite full bathroom with custom shower, toilet, and sink. There is a doorway between this room and the other bedroom upstairs, and this bedroom is open to the top of the stairs.

Outside patio - The space outdoors is beautifully crafted with stones and comfort to enjoy the view and sounds of the river, an evening fire, and amazing sunsets.

Driveway and Accessibility- The driveway will accommodate 2-3 cars and is located on the opposite side of the house as the main entrance. There is a garden path with a couple of short sets of steps that leads from the driveway to the entrance porch.

If you simply want peace and quiet, you have comfortable reading chairs (many slipcovered), games and puzzles, a small library and a writing table with wonderful river views.

As you enjoy your morning coffee on one of the three porches, you might spot the resident eagle soaring over the river in search of breakfast. Or you might see a great blue heron take flight after fishing in the river. Or you might hear the Canada geese as they fly down the river toward Tennessee.

For those who don't want to "disconnect", there is ROKU TV and high speed wi-fi. Your cell phone will work with the setting for “wi-fi calling.” There is also a landline.

What does the area offer that will tempt you to leave your cottage with river views?

The French Broad River offers opportunities to raft with a guide, rent a rubber kayak, or canoe or kayak on your own. There are various put-in points and take-outs close by at Murray's Branch and Paint Rock.

The picturesque Paint Rock corridor is just a mile down river past the cottage. This area is full of possibilities for hiking, picnicking by the creek, biking, swimming, or fishing (TN license required).

The cottage is just fifteen minutes from the charming town of Hot Springs, where there are restaurants, a new brewery and a small grocery store. Hot Springs has been famous for its healing mineral springs for over a century. The current spa with hot tubs by Spring Creek and the French Broad was opened in 1998.

There are plenty of hiking opportunities on numerous trails and Forest Service roads. The beautiful Laurel River trail is only a few miles away, and the Appalachian Trail goes right through Hot Springs. You will find it to be a great home base for exploring other hiking areas in the mountains of Madison County and beyond.

About forty minutes away is the historic town of Marshall, NC, with a lively arts and music scene and some interesting restaurants. If you are coming from Asheville, take the opportunity to stock up at the Ingles grocery, gas station, and pharmacy on the Marshall bypass.

For those willing to explore excellent local cuisine, head to Asheville, known as a foodie's paradise.

Details about more hiking, fishing, and other activities will be provided in a notebook at Red Gate Cottage.

Red Gate Cottage could be ideal for a couple who wants a romantic retreat, a family looking to reconnect in a natural setting, a few friends looking for a true getaway, and outdoor enthusiasts. We welcome you to visit this beautiful home away from home!

Such a wonderful getaway!
The perfect setting for 2 nights with friends. The house is beautiful as well as the scenery. The river is enough to lull you into a nap most anytime. Tubing on the river was fabulous. Will definitely return to do this again!

Serene Cabin Christmas
We visited the cabin for Christmas and it was a peaceful step away from the busyness of everyday life. Beautiful views. We enjoyed walks along the river and reading books on the screened in porches. Even though it was cold, we enjoyed our chats around the fire pit. The property is beautiful, clean and comfortable. It is well-appointed with most everything we need to make a delicious Christmas dinner. Beyond the kitchen, the cabin had all the basics you would need... and not just one 'extra' roll of toilet paper, but plenty to last the entire visit. :) Hosts were quick to respond. We would definitely

Rest, relax, and recharge
We came to get some much needed rest. We had planned to check out some trails in the area, but once there, we never left! The house was so cozy and comfortable. We could hear the river from the house. The kitchen had absolutely everything we needed to cook our meals. I spent about an hour or two just soaking in the tub. It was perfect.

Mountain Wedding
We came to town for a three day stay because our son was getting married at The Ridge. The wedding was awesome. All we needed was a place to stay that had three full bathrooms and beds for 5 adults. What we got was an awesome house that was right on the river. My wife and mother-in-law loved the sound of the river as we sat on the porch and by the fire pit. The beds are very comfortable, the bathrooms are great, and the house was very clean. We had a great time and would definitely stay at the property again.

Great house overlooking the river!
Family of five had a great time! Beautiful home that is well stocked and managed. Short distance to downtown Hot Springs, nice hiking trails and waterfalls. Only drawback was the lack of direct river access but that is solved by a 5 minute drive. Would stay again!

Fantastic!
Beautiful home in georgeous setting. House is exceptionally clean and so comfortable. Lots of lovely personal touches. Hosts provide everything. The beds are firm, but comfortable. Pillows too flat for me (personal preference). We weren't allowed to park in the upper area in front of the house, rather in the lower parking on the far side of the house. That meant my 85 year old mother who uses a walker really struggled up multiple sets of steps and a slightly up hill walking path when coming ang going from the house each day. Due to some issue with former renters, the owners weren't willing to make an exception according to the property manager. That was disappointing. Go online using the owners credentials & the internet will be reliable. My smartphone would not make or receive calls/texts at the house. The owners thankfully have a land line. The road to the property along the river starts as pavement but turns to gravel. There are spots for fishing, swimming & hiking near the house. Hot Springs has many good restaurants. Didn't care for Vinyl Pies Pizza, but loved the Iron Horse Station for supper and Smokey Mountain Diner for a fantastic breakfast. It is only a few miles from the house to town. No grocery stores close. We shopped at Publix in Waynesville beforehand. Gas was $4.00 a gallon at only gas station in town! Fill up before arrival.

Perfect Retreat
We loved our stay in this beautiful river home. The house is new, and the owners have thoughtfully outfitted it with everything a guest could need. My favorite part of my stay was enjoying coffee (or wine!) on one of the screened in porches overlooking the river. Wish I was there now!

Spring Break Refuge
After wanting to stay at The Red Gate for 2 years my husband and I were able to find an open week for spring break. We brought my mom and 13 year old daughter to our very favorite mountain town. Red Gate exceeded our expectations! The owners have created a pristine home away from home for all to enjoy! Elegant touches throughout the new home that has a heartwarming history. I’m a teacher and loved the added touch of including the history, renovation, and new build in the cottage book. The screened porch was my favorite place each morning with coffee and prayer, and each late afternoon after hiking and relaxing with the rush of the river and a cool breeze. We will be back!!

Great March Getaway
We had a wonderful stay at this property. The house was beautiful and well supplied with all that we needed for our stay. The screen porch was well used by our group. Who needs a sound machine for sleeping when you have a river outside? Listening to the river flowing by was very soothing. The only part we didn't like was all the potholes we had to avoid to get to the house. Would highly recommend to anyone needing a tranquil place to stay.

wonderful and relaxing!
The property is perfectly secluded, but easy jumping off point for the many day trips and hikes we took. We loved the song of the river outside the house. We never sat inside! The porch is wonderful and we brought wood from home and enjoyed a fire each evening. The house was immaculate and perfectly outfitted for our simple cooking. Everything was easy! Thank you!

Girlfriends getaway
We had a perfect weekend at the Red Gate Cottage. It met our every need for four moms/childhood besties in their mid-forties needing time together. We laughed, we drank, we ate, we gamed, we tubed, we spa-Ed, we stargazed (amazing!), we relaxed. The weather was perfect and we lived on the screened porch mostly. I cannot say enough great things about the house. The only helpful notes I have, if you have more than two vehicles, it may be an issue with parking. There is amazingly a lot of traffic for a gravel road, but once we figured out what was beyond the house, it made sense. Definitely look for the wildlife: bald eagles, herons, and deer abound. And the sound of the French Broad as your background is simply the best.

One of the best rentals we have stayed in! Extremely clean and well stocked with everything we needed. Location feels private with amazing river views. Access to the river is limited at the house, but a short drive to the water isn't too bad. Downtown Hot Springs is so close and easy to get to. We will be back!

Can we stay here forever?!?!?
Wonderful stay at the Red Gate Cottage, we were actually really sad to leave the morning we had to check out! Upon arrival we were in love with the landscaping and inside decor - a great mix of vintage, antique, and modern! The bottle of wine & book of info about the property and sites to see were greatly appreciated! The screened-in porches were our absolute favorites and when we weren't out & about we spent most of our time there either reading (kids took over porch that we bought hammock for) and eating dinner. We utilized the grill for burgers & steak and the fire pit for hot dogs and s'mores! It was SO lovely opening the bedroom door to hear the river each morning. Other than the delightful river sound, it was peaceful and quiet - which we enjoyed! Our daughters (7 yo & 9 yo) loved sharing the loft room upstairs and were also excited to each have their own bathroom upstairs too. We spent a day in Hot Springs & Marshall (shopping & ice cream at ArtiSun and lunch at Zuma's). Even chatted with the lovely librarian who knows of Red Gate Cottage and some of it's history. We hiked to Max Patch - GORGEOUS view and beautiful weather. On the way back to Hot Springs we stopped at Bluff Mountain Nursery and had a great visit with the daughter of the man who landscaped Red Gate Cottage - and of course came home with some plants for our garden. Breakfast at the Smoky Mountain Diner was yummy and they shared a recipe 'secret' for their pancakes with our 9 yo chef kid. Stacy at Spring Creek Tavern was a wonderful server - the chicken tender meal and mozzarella sticks are a MUST (and can easily feed 4 people). After all of our adventures, coming back to the Red Gate Cottage each day was a welcome and peaceful respite. We miss it already. Well stocked - towels, hair dryer, laundry basket, extra blankets, etc. etc. The only thing you need are perishable food items (we stocked up at Ingles in Marshall) and bring a hammock! Each day driving out and back we spotted bunnies, water fowl, turkeys, squirrels, and deer! Great family time! Hopefully we can stay again one day!!!

This is a beautiful property in a gorgeous location. Communication with the host was great. Upon arrival, the house was exceptionally clean and very well equipped. The French Broad River is right across the road which offers a beautiful view with the peaceful sound of the flow. We enjoyed a fire every night in the fire pit. The 2 ways in and out to this property are fun to walk and explore if one wanted to. We will be back for sure

Peaceful riverside stay!
Cozy, exceptionally livable home right off the water. Well equipped such that cooking in and relaxing was made easy. Comfortable bed and the bathrooms are immaculate (and the big bathtub in the Master suite is a real plus). Screened in patios made for lovely meals looking over the river and there's no better place to have a beer than in a rocking chair! Commutable-enough to Asheville for a day on the town if you don't mind a bit of a drive, and plenty of trailheads closer by. We made the whole trip in our Honda Accord, but as the last few miles of the road is gravel, I wouldn't bring a low-riding sports car!
