*Mardi Gras Dates Still Available!* Cottage in the Pines

Summary:
This cottage in the pines is centrally located in the quaint town of Dauphin Island, Alabama’s beautiful barrier island situated just off the renowned Gulf Coast. This newly renovated home offers the perfect lodging for families, fishermen and snowbirds looking to unwind and enjoy miles of white sandy beaches, fresh Gulf Coast seafood and world-class deep sea fishing and diving.

The Space:
We now have Comcast! Really reliable internet! In 2020, this island cottage underwent a complete renovation where it was was stripped down to its bones and redesigned with stylish finishes and décor that echo the natural elements of the island. The home was fully refinished with new stainless steel appliances, granite countertops and a fully stocked kitchen, and two bright and airy bathrooms with custom bathtubs and showers.

The tropical-themed bedrooms offer guests a spacious retreat to recharge at the end of a long day on the water. The master bedroom and guest bedroom both have flat screen TVs and king-sized beds, and the bunk room has a large sets of bunk beds that offer a cozy space to retire in for the night.

A welcoming screened-in porch and fire pit are located off the back of the cottage among the pines and palmettos, giving guests a private, peaceful setting for enjoying the island breeze.

Guest Access:
This island cottage is a single family home on a half-acre lot centrally located on Dauphin Island. Guests will enjoy the entire home to themselves, as well as the large backyard that backs up to a beautiful forest of tropical vegetation. A grill, fire pit, and beach toys are there for guests to enjoy.

The Neighborhood:
The 164-acre Audubon Bird Sanctuary is a 5-minute drive (1.8 miles) from the steps of this island cottage. The sanctuary is a well-known destination for birdwatchers in search of one of the hundreds of species that live in and migrate through the sanctuary year-round, such as herons and pelicans. Visitors can take a walking tour though the palmetto palms where they can experience the birds in the lush native flora and fauna of the island.

Just past the bird sanctuary is a popular boat launch on the island, where anglers launch their boats sunrise to sundown, as well as the Mobile Bay Ferry (2.1 miles away). The ferry, which departs every hour and a half during the day, transports passengers to the historic Fort Morgan located across Mobile Bay, only 30 minutes from the beaches of Gulf Shores, Alabama.

The Dauphin Island Estuarium, an aquarium that is home to more than 100 different species of native Alabama marine life, and the historic Fort Gaines, where you can find guided tours of the 1821 fort that protected Mobile Bay during the Civil War, are both located less than 10 minutes away from the property. There are three public beaches on Dauphin Island — the East End Public Beach, Bienville Beach and the West End Public Beach. The closest beach access to the cottage is Bienville Beach, which is located about 1 mile away from the home.

With the almost dozen restaurants and snack bars on the island, there’s no shortage of local fare and fresh seafood. Almost every menu on the island serves up the freshest seafood in the South, including freshly caught snapper, grouper, oysters and crab. During the summer there are outdoor movies shown on the West End of the island, and the Dauphin Island Fishing Rodeo during July brings more than 75,000 spectators to the island for a weekend of fun and sports fishing.

Even though the island is small (it’s only 14 miles long and less than 2 miles wide or less, in some areas), it offers an endless amount of activities for vacationers, including an 18-hole golf course and endless water activities. Boat, jet ski, stand-up-paddleboard and kayak rentals are available, as well as sunset cruises and beach access to most of the 17 miles of powder, white sand beaches that wrap around the island. These offerings, in addition to deep-sea fishing and diving, make this Gulf Coast sanctuary one of the top destinations for those looking to escape the crowds and enjoy the beauty and tranquility of the gulf.

We hope you enjoy your stay at Maldanado and enjoy exploring the beautiful Alabama Gulf Coast during your visit!

Getting Around:
Because the property is centrally located on the island, guests can take a quick drive or easily bike or walk to the beaches, nearby attractions and restaurants. Although there is no public transportation, there are miles of walking and biking trails around the island that makes getting around a breeze.

Other Things to Note:
The closest beach access is about a two min. drive away or a 5 minute bike ride. Pets: No cats allowed! Dogs are allowed with a $75 one time fee per dog. There is a maximum of two dogs no larger than 75 pounds each. Dogs who are categorized as "dangerous" or "aggressive" according the ASPCA are not allowed. Bird watching on Dauphin Island

This is the second year we four adults stayed here for the week of bird banding on the island. We love the screened porch on the back where we can bird watch while playing card/dice/board games. It is quite a convenient spot to all the activities on the island yet in a quiet setting. We love this little house and all its amenities, it fits our trips perfectly. The host is attentive but never intrusive. Thank you for letting us stay here.

Positives and negatives

It allowed us to bring the dogs, the neighborhood was quiet, and centrally located. Beware that there were some free roaming dogs twice over a few days stay. The kitchen was stocked.Adequate linens. When I lifted the couch cushions to look for the remote...eww. I found a fork and food under them. I vacuumed the sofa and behind it. I don't think the cleaners actually mopped, I think they just ran a swiffer over the floors because I take my shoes off when I go inside and my socks were immediately dirty. So I mopped the house with a towel from my trunk. The foundation in the house is in need of repairs and the floors are spongy. All of the money was put into making the house "cute" not sturdy and it shows.Because of the blocked culvert in the driveway, water sat in the yard the entire time which contributed to mosquitoes. This has been like this for a long time. The screen on the back porch was torn, so sitting on the porch was a no-go.I can't imagine more than six people in the house. Would I return? Maybe, because there are few places that accept pets.We followed the posted rules to the T and would not rule out returning. After all, it is a beach house.

Lovely Home for a Lovely Vacation

We had a great time staying in this home on Dauphin Island. There was plenty of space and it was easy to find. We also appreciated the kitchen had everything needed to cook at the house so we wouldn't need to eat out for every meal. If you have a bike, it's very close to a path that will take you directly to any beach (although there is not an easy way to walk to the beach directly). We even got to enjoy the firepit in the back! I would highly recommend this house as a nice place to stay on the island.

Mosquito

No one indicated the mosquitoes this time of year were horrible. It was almost impossible to go from car to the house without being attacked. Something should be done. Put a huge damper on our vacation.

Don’t let the pictures fool you

When we arrived on a Thursday we noticed very quickly the unit was not clean. There were dead bugs all over the kitchen table and in/on the dishes that were set up on the table (why?!?! Dust trap). Which meant we had to was the dishes before ever using them. There were cobwebs with dead bugs all along the ceiling and in the window seals. We started picking rooms and noticed we were missing a bed. An entire bed! We booked this unit for 9 people. It states it slept 9 people. We had 4 adults, 2 toddlers, and 3 teens. Listing showed 2 kings and a bunk with trundle. I called the property manager and she said yeah that broke. Someone will have to sleep on the couch and we will get to it tomorrow. Cool. At that point I said the place isn’t clean and we are literally short a bed we need some kind of refund. At 9 that night we went looking for extra bedding since someone was sleeping on the couch. Nothing! So at 9pm we had to go buy bedding. We didn’t bring any with us since bedding was provided. Forgot to mention I was told to only message so the team would know what was going on. Got a message Friday that a cleaning crew would be coming and a bed. A bed not a blow up mattress. I had also messaged about only have 7 towels for 9 people and the floor being so nasty the kids had black feet. Also, the listing has pictures of chairs around the fire pit. Those don’t exist. I had mentioned that as well. Unit is not what it appears. No more characters to continue review

Peaceful

The house is in a very peaceful area. It is well stocked, however, it was a seek and find game to figure out where everything was located. I was a little confused at check out because the checkout directions on the refrigerator differed from the checkout directions emailed to me.

Amazing

This home is very beautiful and well kept. The home was properly stocked it wasn’t over decorated the sheets was so soft and comfortable the best pillow literally I have ever slept on. We didn’t need any amenities as there was plenty and everything was name brand it wasn’t cheaply thought of they even have Joe bean bags in the kids room for the guest. The place was literally set up like a home a way from home the water pressure was perfect the cleanliness was amazing the communication and respect from the property manager was very well only issue that I am aware of is the property changed systems so they wasn’t receiving my messages they would have to go back to the old system they used other than that the property manager was highly respectful. I do recommend a ceiling fan in the sun room for comfort how ever the sun room is perfect size and is connected to the laundry room and the laundry room does have its own door and it’s got a/c in it- how perfect is that! Thank you to the property manager as well the cleaning staff.

Cute house

The house was very nice. We encountered only a couple issues. 1. The front door handle was a lever style, rather than a round knob. My dog can open those, and the door doesn’t lock from the inside. Our first night there, while we were out to dinner, my dogs escaped. Luckily, we found them and they were only filthy and exhausted. For the rest of the vacation, we had to lock the dogs in a bedroom or bathroom. 2. The lawn needed mowing. Otherwise, we were happy with the stay.

Spring Bird Watching Trip

We were four adults come to the Island for bird watching and relaxation. Cottage in the Pines was perfect for us. The screened-in back porch was our favorite place to sit and watch the birds, especially Bluebirds. We enjoyed watching bird banding, a Market in Green Park and a plant sale. Always a good time on the Island. We hope to stay at Cottage in the Pines again.

Okay Stay

This house was clean and for staying “off-beach” was a great proximity to most things. The place is really too small for a large group (we had 9 adults). Adults can’t sleep 3 to a king bed actually. The trundle mattress would only be comfortable for a child. The bathrooms were tiny and the shower stall in one was way too small and made taking a shower miserable. The kitchen lacked a lot of utensils and cookware we needed. Take bug spray for mosquitoes if you want to be outside. I did enjoy walking my dog in the neighborhood and the house cooled well in the main part but was a little warm in the bedrooms. We loved the big dining table and couch for gathering in the great room so that was a plus! We enjoyed biking up to the Art Gallery, Little Red Schoolhouse, Lighthouse Bakery and centrally located places. The middle public beach was awful to get to from its parking lot and the island needs to replace the boardwalk; so even though it was a short biking distance we ended up driving to West End all the time which was less convenient.
