Welcome to the Historic Bywater Cottage at 3149 Chartres Street! This charming Victorian guest house, built in 1892, offers 1,200 sq ft of cozy comfort with modern amenities. Our two-bedroom cottage comfortably sleeps 4, with room for up to 6 adults. Relax on the bayou-style porch, surrounded by our charming courtyard and gardens. Next, explore the best New Orleans neighborhoods by stepping out into the vibrant Bywater, Faubourg Marigny, and the French Quarter discovering local dining, music, and art in the heart of it all!  With off-street parking and an inspiring remote work setup, this is your perfect New Orleans getaway!

The mystic of this true historic gem, lovingly restored in its Southern charm with modern comforts, offers an unforgettable experience for guests. Nestled behind a garden gate, the quaint cottage is the perfect place for a cozy escape and near minutes from Bourbon Street shenanigans.

As you approach the cottage, the bayou-style porch welcomes you, featuring a 125-year-old pew and inviting southern rockersa perfect spot to sip morning coffee while taking in the quiet hum of the neighborhood. Step inside to find high ceilings and original hardwood floors that echo the elegance of its 1892 Victorian roots. Every corner of this guest house tells a story; from the antique furnishings to the unique pieces sourced from movie sets, including Interview With a Vampire and the holiday classic Angels Sing starring Harry Connick Jr. and Willie Nelson.

The property sits on the estate of the original H.H. Slawson Plantation, where the former stables, Smitty house, and carriage grounds have transformed into lush gardens and pavilion areas. These serene outdoor spaces are perfect for leisurely afternoons with a book, evening gatherings, or even a unique remote office setup. Imagine hosting virtual meetings with the charm of a Southern Garden as your backdropchoose from 9 different areas so your colleagues will surely be envious, with a different picturesque backdrop each day!

Beyond the garden walls lies the vibrant Bywater neighborhood, bursting with creativity and soul. Walk to the local cafes, shops, and venues that give Bywater its unique character (see links here), or wander a bit further to the lively streets of Faubourg Marigny and the historic French Quarter for a taste of New Orleans' famed music, food, and nightlife. After a day exploring the city or strolling along the riverfront, return to your private oasis. The courtyard and pavilion invite you to unwind as cicadas and tree frogs sing you into a true New Orleans state of mind.

This cottage is not just a place to stay; it is a living piece of history. Built on the same grounds as the estates original Creole cottage, constructed between 1866 and 1868 right after the Civil War as a brothel, it is a testament to the citys enduring spirit. The walls have absorbed the energy of artists, musicians, writers, and travelers from all walks of life. It continues to inspire a new generation of creators, including jazz artist Josh Harmon! Our home is always drawing in minds from cities like Detroit, Chicago, Minneapolis, Atlanta, New York and Baltimore, not to mention Europe and Asia. By choosing this cottage, you become part of its rich legacy, helping preserve this magical space for future guests.

Additional perks include off-street parking and proximity to a host of local attractions, from James Beard Award semi-finalist eateries like BABS formerly known as Bywater American Bistro to the vibrant music scene at The Spotted Cat Music Club and the experiential space JAMNOLA. Whether y'all seek a short-term retreat or a longer stay (28 days or more), the Historic Bywater Cottage promises an experience filled with the warmth, culture, and magic that define New Orleans.

Nice stay in Bywater
This property was everything advertised. Walk to Frenchmen and Bourbon Streets was reasonable, safe. We had four adult males, but if stayed on the main streets never felt any issues, saw females walking regularly. Michael was very helpful and responsive the entire time. Set up rides to and from the airport(thanks Jason) and provided us with good local inside information that added to the fun and enjoyment we had in New Orleans.

Just the ladies
My daughters and I had our first trip to New Orleans and were delighted with our host. Michael made us feel special without being obtrusive. He quickly answered all questions and requests; if felt like he dropped everything to meet our needs. He coordinated travel to and from the airport, and an off handed question turned quickly into a mystical experience after he took the time to search out anoption for us. I would highly recommend staying at the cottage.

New Orleans Adventure
I was extremely impressed with the level of customer service provided by the owner! He ensured that we were picked up from the Train Station so we would not need to use an Uber or Lyft, he offered to pick up any items we may need at the store prior to our arrival and checked us in personally. His knowledge of the history of his property was amazing and intriguing. The beds were very comfortable and the courtyard ambiance was perfect - a nice evening with friends and wine! I will definitely stay here again when we come back to New Orleans!

Great!
Wasn’t aware that the backyard was a shared patio area, nor did we realize the homeowner was going to be in the yard the majority of the days. Although extremely friendly, we would have liked a bit more privacy. Also, the air conditioning seemed to have a hard time getting below 80 degrees inside the home. It was over 100 degrees outside for the time we were there, but would have liked a cooler experience inside the home. Everything else including the landlord was absolutely perfect though! Great neighborhood and perfect place to have a few friends and enjoy New Orleans without being smack in the middle of the quarter. It was only a couple bucks to Lyft to and from the quarter to the cottage.

Sickening
Some of the rooms in images were photoshopped or altered. The home is in need of repair and has cockroaches. Which obviously ended our stay. The host company will deny this -even with picture proof. Don’t advise anyone to stay you’ll lose all your money while they lie & refuse to give a refund.

Great spot, fantastic location, great host!
We really enjoyed our stay! The highlight is the front porch and the whole outdoor courtyard area! Such a fab place to hang out! The location is also great. We not only explored Bywater, but walked over to Frenchman Street and the French Quarter. The house itself is charming. Older, but comfortable and stocked with everything we needed. On top of it all, B. Michael was a great host - super friendly and helpful!

We had an incredible experience staying for over a week on the beautiful property. Been coming to Nola for almost 25 years and once of the nicest backyards I've ever been in. Michael is a kind and attentive host who has built an amazing compound on the property. Can't wait to get back there!!

Historic NOLA Neighborhood
I could have spent all day lounging in the courtyard of this lovely property. I was looking for something more non-touristy in New Orleans, and I got exactly what I wanted. This beautifully renovated historic property offered everything I was looking for. The owner was super responsive and provided interesting details about the building and the neighborhood, in general. Very dog friendly, which was a plus as well. The only suggestion (NOT to be seen as a negative, because the owner was very clear about what supplies were available and even offered to have groceries available on our arrival) is to provide very basic items (hand soap, paper products such as Kleenex, coffee, tea, sugar) to make the stay even easier. That being said, I loved the stay, the owner was great, and I will definitely be coming back!!!

PERFECT VICINITY
The property was AMAZING. It was in a great vicinity where the "little" off the beaten track resturants are located. Honestly, we never drove our vehicle anywhere except to the swamp tour. The house was clean, the bed slept wonderful and it was equiped with everything you would need. Our fur babies went and the yard was perfect for them. If we ever return to New Orleans we will look for property offered by Michael. He was amazing. He was on the property working on a residence next door and told us where we should grocery shop, eat and how to get to the French Market, French Quarter, Bourban Street, etc. WE HAD A GREAT TIME.

Family visit with aging parents
The property proximity to amenities is wonderful! The owner was very easy to communicate with and explained the check in process perfectly. The location in Bywater is great - lots of restaurants close by and walkable to the Quarter. There is a gracious porch, perfect for morning coffee with a small, useable back yard. Large kitchen with full refrigerator, and stove - no dishwasher and small eating space for dining. The bedrooms are good sized and there are 2 living/sitting rooms. Nice secured parking. Only negatives were small bathroom/lack of space, lack of good dining space and painting needed. We will definetly stay there again!
