Get a tour of the most interesting city that was crowned the Erasmus Destination of the Year at EGM in 2022!
We are going to start at Aristotelous square where the east and west parts of the city connect through the bus system. If you look at it from above it looks like a vodka bottle! After the great fire of 1917 the French architect Hernest Hebrar was given the task to design the centre of Thessaloniki including Aristotelous square.
There is no better way to meet the city than a view from above! See the urban skyline from the center's best rooftop bar!
Heading to the Jewish district, we will uncover the huge impact the Jewish people played on Salonica or Madre de Israel, the Mother of Israel, to its Spanish Jewish inhabitants and as the Jerusalem of the Balkans to non-Jews. What makes the Jewish community of Thessaloniki unique is its continued presence throughout the city’s 2,300-year old history, a rare fact in the annals of Jewish history, even for Jerusalem or Alexandria.
Next, is the trading district where all the European traders used to set up stalls to display their merchandise. Now, the former glamour of this area has eclipsed but a new artistic era has begun. Let's explore together the changes that have been made to this long neglected neighbourhood and the battle to keep it ''alive''.
Then we will head to the Ancient Roman market where we will discover the hidden markets and bars as well as find out the great controversy found in this ancient forum.
Next we head off to the university student area, this is where all the hustle and bustle happens! Right next to the campus and underneath the imposing church of Rotonta (unesco monument), we all come here to have fun and meet new people.
Also discover the cooperative bars and bookshops owned by the young proletariats! Taste the beer which is made in our city and see how it feels like to be a university student!
Of course we can't miss Kamara (the arch of Galerious) from this tour as it is a big meeting spot and it is always live 24/7. Finishing our tour I will give you a personalised list of foods to try and places to visit while you are here.
Discover all the aspects that make this city special-from anarchist squats to traditional craft shops. Connect with the locals and hear out their own point of view about the nightlife here.
All in all, this tour explores the nightlife of Thessaloniki and all the essentials that you should know about!
You will be encouraged to try some local drinks and beer as well
