Summary:
This recently renovated eighteenth-century top floor flat offers stunning views of Wells Cathedral, St. Cuthbert’s church and Glastonbury Tor. The quiet central location means the Market Square, shops, restaurants and pubs are all a short walk away. A beautiful combination of historical stone and beams combined with a luxurious modern interior give this flat a unique ambience, making it ideal for a long weekend to enjoy all that Wells has to offer, or as a base for a longer stay.
The Space:
Ancient timbers and lofty ceilings give a bright and spacious quality to the main living/dining room, and being the entire top floor of The Old Guard House, the apartment has views on all four sides of the building, creating the feeling of a secluded peaceful eyrie. Opening skylights and sash windows offer welcome cross breezes on warmer days. Stand on the balcony and take in the sonorous tones of the Cathedral bells (especially on Friday afternoons, when the bell ringers really practice vigorously).
This cosy apartment is ideal for two people, though the mezzanine sleeping area with comfortable sofa bed and balcony views of the cathedral can accommodate one more - subject to a £30 per night.
Kitchen and bathroom fittings are high quality and contemporary. Original refinished 18th century elm floorboards. TV, radio, and plenty of books and local information to read, with Wifi and Bluetooth Bose Soundlink speaker for streaming entertainment. Nespresso coffee machine. The White Company towels. Natural bathroom products.
There is one dedicated parking space to the rear of the building, with a brief walk around to the front entrance. The top floor apartment is up three flights of stairs so not suitable for everyone, but the stairs will keep you fit and the amazing views are your reward. There is no lift, so it’s best not to book this place if you can’t manage stairs and have heavy luggage.
Despite the central location there are great country walks within minutes of the flat, including easy access to the Mendip Way and Monarch’s Way. There are plenty of green spaces around the corner for picnics in the local parks and Bishop’s Fields. Wells has a lively outdoor market in the square every Wednesday and Saturday, as well as numerous concerts and festivals year round. It is easy to stay for days without needing a vehicle as everything is so close by. And if you are not arriving by car, the nearest train station is Castle Cary, from where a thirteen mile taxi ride can bring you to Wells.
Unfortunately due to the stairs, the mezzanine and the balcony, the apartment is not suitable for children under twelve. No smoking or pets.
The Neighborhood:
We are located just off Wells High Street so easy walking distance to all this wonderful little city offers. Nearby are Glastonbury, Bath, the Somerset coast, the Mendip Hills, and for contemporary art lovers, Hauser & Wirth Gallery in Bruton.
Getting Around:
Wells has plenty of buses to move you around the city or to near by towns. We are at the foot of the Mendips and there are plenty of wonderful walks near by such as Ebbor Gorge and Cheddar Gorge is a short drive away as well. There are some lovely reservoirs near by plus a stroll up the Tor at Glastonbury is a must.
