Hidden gem

This hotel is beautiful! If you like older, throw backs to the past, antiques, nostalgia or hotels that tell a story, then this is the stay for you. I can tell you that the town doesn't have much to offer, but this hotel and its almost 100year old history does. Beautiful entrance, tile flooring, fireplace, restaurant, bar, gift shop, and even a puzzle to work gives this hotel a quaint charm. The front desk gentleman was very friendly, offered no hesitation in speaking with guests and ensured that our stay was special with a bag full of goodies and a smile. The linens were clean and comfortable and the towels were some of the softest I have ever used. This hotel offered cookies, water, coffee and a warm ambiance like no other.

Very disappointing stay at El Capitan.

The hotel's heating system went out and it was very cold. Took hours to get the heat on again and still it wasn’t up to par. The communication with guest as to what was going with the heating problem was horrible and evetually no one was at the desk to answer questions or answer phone calls.

Great historic hotel that provides the best room and board in Van Horn. The only thing to note is that the vintage rooms are vintage sized! If you have more than one guest in your party, definitely go for a larger room!

Great period experience

I had made an error in booking and the desk clerk was very understanding and helpful in resolving it, even though we were a late arrival. Room was a bit cramped but that was typical of room for period hotels of the era Rl Capitan was built. Lobby and dining areas were very nice. Breakfast was excellent.

It is a historic property. Enjoy its quaintness. Having stayed here numerous times, I/we do find an inordinate number of dogs in nearby guest rooms. The barking is a distraction and forces us to use a "sleep sound machine" to drown out the noise.
