Nice Cottage but Poor Land Management
The cottage is beautiful but poor property management soured 1 of 3 nights. A snowstorm hit 2 days before our checkin, yet only 40mins before arrival when we were already on the way the host informed us the driveway wasn’t plowed due to issues with removal companies. His instruction was to “not park all the way up at the cottage just go as far as your car allows” and a plow would arrive shortly. As we drove up we learned their private road wasn't cleared either so our truck got stuck. It took 2 hours to dig it out and after a neighbor told us we actually weren’t allowed to park on the road, we had to wait with the cars in the driveway of another neighbor who wasn’t home. I’m not sure where else we could have gone since the road attaches directly to the highway. The plow arrived 3 hours after checkin and took another hour, meaning we spent 4 hours digging out snow and waiting in the cars before accessing the cottage. The host’s father even suggested WE pay for the plow before backtracking that they would “generously” pay.With only 40 minutes notice for snow that fell 2 days earlier, no real plan for parking, and the cottage inaccessible 250m of knee-high snow away, our first night was completely disrupted. I get things happen but snow in rural Vals-des-Monts is a predictable problem and communication was inadequate. After the trip the host denied a partial refund, instead offering 20% off a future stay—although if he won’t make good on this one, why would we stay again?
