Hotel Central Background
In 1931, the monumental Hotel Central was built across from the station in Tilburg in Art Deco style by architect Casper Melchior Balthasar van den Beld. Before that time, this location was occupied by the café-restaurant Albert Janssen.
During World War I, Theo van Doesburg was stationed as a sergeant-postman on the Regte Heide between Tilburg and the Belgian border. The café-restaurant of Albert Janssen served as a meeting place for Van Doesburg and his artistic friends who organized sensational Dadaist 'intimate soirées' there. It was also here that preliminary ideas were formulated for a new magazine (De Stijl) that would mark the start of the art movement De Stijl, founded in 1917 in Leiden. The contours of this renewal movement were sketched in pencil at this location on Spoorlaan in Tilburg.
As a salute to the innovation drive of the time, during the renovation of Hotel Central in 2023, it was decided to historically jump and give each of the 21 rooms the name of an artist associated with De Stijl or a Dada artist.
In the person of Theo van Doesburg (who wrote Dadaist poems under the pseudonym I.K. Bonset), De Stijl and the experimental absurdist Dadaism come together. Both art movements were a response to World War I and the new era that began with the 20th century, and were diametrically opposed in approach.
Each of the 21 rooms in Hotel Central has received unique wall coverings featuring specific accents and/or quotes from the respective artist, writer, or architect.
Room 20: Lena Milius Room (Zwolle, 1889 - 1968)
The Tilburg-based accountant Lena Milius was introduced to Theo van Doesburg by her colleague Maurits Manheim at the end of 1914. In 1917, the year Van Doesburg founded the new art movement De Stijl in Leiden, she became his second wife. As a former secretary, she facilitated the administrative affairs surrounding the art movement De Stijl. Even after Van Doesburg left her a few years into their marriage for Nelly van Moorsel, who would become his third wife, Lena remained loyal to him (and Nelly) and continued to support them in the background. She and Nelly van Doesburg were the only ones who attended Van Doesburg's cremation in 1931. Lena wrote about this to her friend Antony Kok, "I went there to say goodbye to Does forever and because Nelly made him so very happy."
After the war, Lena Milius was an important source for historians as an eyewitness to the early years of De Stijl. "It is remarkable how lively the interest in Does and De Stijl still is and even seems to be reviving lately," she wrote in 1967 to Nelly.
In room 20, the pages from an empty cash book form the print of the wall covering. Behind the bed is a desk with a classic typewriter printed in which a quote from a love letter from Lena Milius to Theo van Doesburg is included. In the few lines of this love note from an amorous Lena, her love and her office work are connected.
This apartment is perfectly situated to explore Tilburg and the surrounding regions. In the nearby area, you can find activities such as laser tag, go-karting, escape rooms, and mini golf. Poppodium 013 regularly hosts performances, and for a peaceful walk, you can visit the nearby city park.
By car, you are just 15 minutes away from popular destinations such as De Efteling theme park and Safaripark Beekse Bergen.
