Rustic Cowboy-Cougar Cabin On the Pecos River

This cabin does not have a bathroom or shower. It has a double seater outhouse & a camping toilet inside for night use. There is no shower on the property for this cabin. If u want to bathe, I suggest a sponge bathe inside the sink or basin provided. We are pet friendly. There is a $25 pet fee for each pet. This is a Cowboy Cabin back in time. This 19th Century mountain cabin which sets right on the famous Pecos River in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in Tererro, NM. The Cabin has been studied, dated, and is one of the last original homesteads in the area. This is a true historic site maintained by descendants of original family for six generations . The cabin was built circa 1860 and is what pioneers called a 'dugout'. A dugout was an efficient way of setting a solid foundation with three of the four exterior walls being embedded in the ground. This helped insulate the cabin and made the structure easy to defend. This cabin is a two room cabin with a cozy studio feel. The cabin is even outfitted with a old time outhouse or as our ancestors called it, a 'powder room'. The outhouse sets about fifteen yards behind the cabin and is the toilet used at the cabin, but if you are a little weary about going out at dark don't worry, there is a camp toilet inside to use. This is an outdoors enthusiasts dream come true, that being said this is not the Hilton Garden Inn. If you want to experience a real mountain getaway and are ok with heating by wood stoves and experiencing life as you would 200 years ago with a few modern conveniences then this is the place for you. Start by waking up early and having your coffee on the patio listening to the flow of the Acequia which feeds into the pond right at your front door, enjoying the view of humming birds and mule deer moving through the river banks. Enjoy some of the best fly fishing in the world for Rainbow and German Brown trout without ever needing to go more than just a few feet on your own private section of the river. Later before lunch comb the area for turquoise and silver. The small now ghost town of Terrero was made famous as a busting mining town in the days of the old west. The original mine sets less than a half mile from the cabin across Hwy 63 from the entrance to property. After cooking some your those fresh cold water trout for lunch take a hike up the canyon in the middle of the Sante Fe National Forrest to see elk, eagle, deer, and other wildlife. If the quiet seclusion is too much don’t worry, the town of Pecos is only about a 25 minute ride through the beautiful river canyon. You can google search other amenities like horse back riding. There are guided pack tours for the sportsman out there for elk, deer, and bear hunts. For a more vibrant experience head to the historic town of Santa Fe which is about an hour ride south where you will experience excellent southwest cuisine inspired by native chilies harvested from the area as well as native southwestern art, and heritage. The town also receives its fair share of entertainers from local bars to large scale concerts. Be sure to hit Jacolopes on Cerillos for great souvenirs and the Native Market at 'Old Towne' for authentic southwest jewelry, and art. After a day in town come back to a quiet evening, start a fire in the pit and enjoy the clearest sky you will ever see. The stars are countless and the evening air is cool, just like the perfect fall night, but in summer. At last you will be rocked to sleep by the sound of the rushing river outside. A true paradise awaits you. For interesting reading on the area be sure to look up 'Pioneers of the Upper Most Pecos', and Beatty's Cabin.

Awful
This is.easily the worst Vrbo I’ve rented. The rental is dark, with cheesy dated furniture and a poorly operating wood stove. The harsh LED lighting and the ancient TV made being inside this cabin something to be endured rather than enjoyed. The out house was dirty with rat feces on the floor. Multiple animals rustled on the roof all night keeping us awake. I’ve stayed in lean-to’s that were better. The advertised price is misleading because with the fees and minimum stay our costs were much higher.

Hillside hovel
I’m completely baffled by the good reviews. We opened the door, stayed long enough to book somewhere else, and left asap. We knew we were in trouble when to get to the property you have to drive through a lane of overgrown poorly maintained homes, all of which are visible from this place. This place is located in the side yard of another home - it is not remote or private at all. When I opened the door, I felt like I was entering the fruit cellar in my grandmother’s basement-the walls were weeping (wet) and the stench of mothballs was overpowering. The furniture is beat up & splattered with paint, and some of the windows have duct tape on them. When I contacted the owner to let her know we wouldn’t be staying there, she only said we must not be accustomed to “roughing it.” I assure you that isn’t the case as we own property at the mouth of the Pecos along the border in the desert. We have no running water or electricity & are very accustomed to a bucket toilet. I would pay to not stay here, which is basically what happened because we immediately left. I have stayed in vacation rentals for almost 20 years & have never ever once left a place and not stayed. I guess there’s a first time for everything… Save your money, bring a tent & a bucket, and camp up in the National Forest.

The most perfect trip and escape from the big city
It was honestly one of the best trips I have ever taken. Sandra is such a wonderful person with such a slice of heaven with this incredible piece of property. We didn’t want or need for anything, everything that we needed was provided, wonderful Internet, service, extremely comfortable bed, great kitchen and appliances. I cannot say enough wonderful things about this property. We enjoyed feeding the ducks and watching all the different birds and wildlife. We will be back ASAP. Thank you again for the most wonderful experience

Beautiful property with amazing fishing!
The small cabin was great for two people, lots of beautiful views and outdoor space without the crowds of campers that Pecos gets in the summer. If you like fishing, you will love this place!!!!

A lovely memory
We have a lovely memory of our one-week family vacation at the Cowboy-Cougar Cabin. It was the ideal retreat from urban life. Built into a steep but climbable mountainside, the rustic stone and wood structure evokes the charm a bygone era. It is cozy and snug and offers surprisingly many comforts. We quickly adapted to washing cowboy-style with cold water and taking nocturnal hikes to the outhouse. The hotplate and propane grill fed all our culinary cravings and we spent several convivial nights at the campfire. When the embers dimmed, we gazed at the stars and savored the tranquility. The surrounding nature is blessed with extraordinary beauty. Gentle fields, lush subalpine vegetation, a front porch stream, a duck-filled pond, and the mighty Pecos River. We encountered colorful birds, chipmunks, and deer. It was a great pleasure to stay here. Thank you, Sondra. We hope to return one day.

My Birthday Weekend
I decided to do some self care and go off the grid for a few days for my birthday. The cabin, the stream, the pond, the river was all beautiful and quiet. The only thing that did not work was the WiFi. The log in information I received via email was not working at all even after trying to manually enter the information. So I was literally off the grid for a few days, but well worth it. Thank you for cabin it was much needed.

Do The Dugout…;)
Y’all…we had the best stay ever…!!! Absolute hidden gem…GREAT compromise for my honey and I…we could “rough it” but gave me the piece of mind to shut a door from any nighttime creatures that might want to pay a visit if were on a mountain sleeping in a tent…;) Maybe not as “secluded” as we thought (however other guests and host and staff on site were precious and friendly and could visit and each be on our way) BUT definitely an awesome stay and very enjoyable and relaxing time away…!!! I got to chill on the porch or in the swing down by the river while the hubby fished his heart out…!!! PS…don’t let the outhouse aspect to the dug out experience scare you…gotta love a host that makes you feel right at home with EXTREMELY clean (cleaner than some hotels we have stayed in) and decorated romantic two seater…and the hike uphill was no issue at all and just added to the adventure…!!! Total recommend…best nights sleep ever…!!! That dugout is cool and DARK…!!! Darkest dark ever but when time for some solid shut eye…worked PERFECTLY…!!! Thanks for opening up your family’s treasure to share…!!! ENJOYED…!!!

Awesome Experience!!!!
Just a beutiful awe-inspiring place with just the right touches. Great access to the surrounding areas, fishing, etc. but with just the right amount of ruggedness, secludedness and privacy. Sondra is a beautiful person and does a great job making one feel welcome and comfortable. I could go on and on, but I think it suffices to say it was as good as it could possibly get. Cheers, Kyle

Wonderfully rustic yet so comfortable
This cabin is so comfortable with all the amenities except a bathroom. The camp toilet serves it’s purpose and there is an outhouse. Everything you need, even tv & Wi-Fi, is there so just bring your clothes, food, & fishing gear. As a woman alone, I felt very safe. I will definitely go back

Beautiful
If you want an experience, this is the place. This stone cabin is very cozy. Allows you to "camp" with some amenities like running water and electricity. The out-house and camp toilet inside was adequate enough. She has everything you need to cook efficiently. The bed is SO comfy with memory foam pillows and we stayed warm. Definitely want all wheel drive if it's been rainy. The mountain itself is jaw dropping gorgeous. We enjoyed playing by the Pecos river during the day.

I really had a great time here. I stayed in the Cowboy Dugout. It is very rustic, which is really my ideal. The cabin was clean, but I think it coulda been tidied up a bit more than it was. It had a lot more supplies than I expected, which was very nice! The host was very nice!

Beautiful Vistas
This place was a wonderful stay. Nestled in the mountains, the land gave a wonderful view while keeping cool temps while August raged on in other parts of the US. While the location was remote, Santa Fe was a short 1 hour away and could easily satisfy any need we encountered. If you're contemplating if you should rent here, let me be clear: "THIS IS WHERE YOU WANT TO STAY."

Wonderful very rustic property
I had a great time with my two boys. The cabin is very rustic and simple. A step up from tent camping. The ditch runs right on front and the river is vey close. If you set you expectations accordingly, this is a great place to fish and enjoy the view. Very primitive sleeping arrangement on a wonderful price of land.
