Blue Wrasse - Cute Little Cottage with New Deck

Wonderful location for a family on a budget. Brand new expanded deck with outdoor dining and lounging. Lower level renovated in 2018 with new half bath added and new flooring and deck! Gorgeous views of Coral Bay. Cute little cottage (this is not a luxury villa) sleeps up to 6: two on queen size bed in bedroom, two in king size bed in the loft, and two on the pullout futon. Updated kitchen is fully stocked with all the necessary utensils, plates, cups, and cooking supplies.

This cottage sits at the bottom of the lot and thus has many steps (82) down to the unit. This cottage is probably not for the elderly.

The cottage has air conditioning throughout, with the exception of the screened in porch and screened-in bathroom - what a view from the full bathroom! The bathroom was also recently renovated with all new tile and fixtures.

Relax on the deck and porch while sipping cocktails looking at the boats anchored just below. Plenty of nearby restaurants and beaches to keep you busy all day long!

In order to keep our rental rates as low as they are, the cottage only comes with 1 bath towel, 1 washcloth, and 1 beach towel per registered guest per week and linens for the number of registered guests at arrival. The cottage does not include in-stay housekeeping or towel/linen service. If you would like in-stay cleaning services you can arrange that directly with our on-island managers at your own cost. Additionally, if you feel you may need more at your arrival, please ask when making your reservation to pre-pay for 1 additional of each towel per person per week ($50 for 2 guests, $75 for 4 guests, and $100 for 6 guests) and we will add that fee to your reservation. There are several laundromats on the island as well if you would prefer to clean your own towels during your stay.

For those who have been to St John before you can rest easy that the road to the house is a concrete straightaway with no switchbacks!

Magical
If you can get past the challenges that have been described by others- 80 steps down, non potable water, no paper in the toilets, small space with only outside access from kitchen to bedroom, occasional electricity outage- then this is a wonderful place. The view is magnificent and from the deck it feels like having the entire valley and bay to yourself. A place to get away from civilization.

Great Place, Awesome View!!
This little cottage had everything for our anniversary week! The view was breathtaking. Jungle sounds in lazy Coral Bay are just the best! Please note- there are ALOT of stairs up/down to the property so those with mobility issues should opt out. Great place!

A needed break before xmas
What a beautiful view! I didn’t know there would be so many steps down to the cottage but we got our flights in each day. Secluded and felt private even though there are residences on either side. Would stay again but couldn’t do it if one had knee problems.

Coffee in the deck!
Our week at this cottage was great. The deck and view is the highlight. Watched the sun rise every morning. The description is accurate. We were fine with the stairs but that will limit who this cottage is good for. Don’t forget you need to carry your luggage and groceries up and down them also.

Small Cottage w/ Fantastic View in a Great Location!
We stayed 5 nights at Blue Wrasse for our 13th anniversary. The view from this small cottage home was absolutely breathtaking and located on a steep hill just above Johnny Lime, Sharky's, and Jolly Dog. There are ~80 (slick when wet) stairs to get down to the cottage, so be prepared if you have a lot of luggage! Taking a shower & using the toilet outside was new for us and there were no curtains to provide privacy. The water pressure was VERY low, so if you have long hair, it's difficult to wash after a day at the beach, but we made it work. The AC was a lifesaver, but the location of the AC in the downstairs bedroom was right above my head and very loud so I did not sleep well during our stay. Also, there are no curtains in the home to provide relief from the heat of the sun coming into the windows or privacy, if desired. As previous reviews have stated, there is a bug problem in the home. We expected a spider or a lizard here and there due to the climate based on the owner responses to these reviews, but cockroaches are unacceptable and preventable. I was woken up each night due to a cockroach crawling on me. Yes, we took out the trash daily and kept the doors shut. In addition, there was a leak in the roof that dripped down onto the bed in the loft. We advised the property manager immediately who confirmed they'd have it looked at, but we never received a follow up that it was fixed so we were unable to use that bed. Fantastic book selection!!

Good trip with unfortunate circumstances
The beginning of our tip was great! Until the power went out. We booked this house as they were one of the only places with A/C. However, what they do not say in the description is that you will not have access to the A/C as well as running water once the power goes out. Again, we did not know about the frequent power outages until we got to the house. I want to clarify I am not blaming the property for the power outage, that is on WAPA (the electricity company). However, I am saying that the property had a right to let us know prior or after booking (not when we got there) that the power frequently goes out, and that when it does you have no water or electricity. We were not able to charge phones, make calls or text, shower, cook, wash dishes, and cool off in the A/C after a long day in the heat. While the power was not out our entire trip it was out at one point for a full 24 hours and then 6-8 hours on other days. Again, not the property's fault the power went out, but we would have liked to have been warned before we got to the house. The property is beautiful and in a wonderful location, a generator on the property would go a long way however.

Blue Wrasse vacation
We had a lovely stay at Blue Wrasse. It is a cute private cottage with a stunning view of Coral Bay from the large deck. There are 80 plus steps down to the cottage from the car and they pretty steep. We didn't have any trouble with them but this cottage is for those without any mobility issues for sure. There is a small screen porch with a table for two and one chair. There is a very small living space with a futon and a kitchen area and a table against the wall. There is air conditioning and a television and it is comfortable for two people. There is a loft with a queen bed but the steps are a bit challenging. We didn't use that. The bathroom on that level is outside in a screened area surrounded by the rain forest. The shower is in that bathroom. From that level you go out to the deck and down more steps to the bedroom which has a queen bed, a beautiful view and another deck. In the bedroom is a toilet and sink separated from the bed by a curtain. The property manager, Kat is amazing. She is so warm, kind and responsive. We didn't have any problems with bugs in the cottage because we followed her instructions of removing garbage daily and cleaning up crumbs carefully. There are no see ums and mosquitoes especially after rain but that is true at any cottage on the island. We saw an iquana in the tree from the deck and we loved having our breakfast outside watching the incredible view. We used the beach chairs which were in a shed by the parking area.

Love the Blue Wrasse!!
The Blue Wrasse is such a unique, charming find. The porch and view are spectacular. We loved our morning coffee watching the sun rise over St. John's. The pictures somehow don't even give the view justice. We used the loft, futon and downstairs bedroom and all slept quite comfortably. The air conditioning is so nice after long days out in the sum. We also enjoyed being able to watch a movie after sunset. We loved the outdoor shower!! The cottage is well-equipped and has everything you need for meal prep. We used the grill for multiple meals. We also used the snorkel gear and cooler on site...very convenient. Kat is such a pleasure to deal with and will respond quickly with any questions. Highly recommend the Blue Wrasse and hope to be back!!

Honest review
Pretty good value as far as the island is concerned. Beautiful location with an incredible view from the deck and nice grill. Great stock of kitchen items and various things like spices, and condiments from previous guests. This is a split level with the loft and kitchen (with futon) together on the upper level and a lower level with the queen bed which is non accessible aside from going outside and down a flight of stairs. Almost everything you need for a stay, snorkel gear, kitchen items etc but beware for longer stays they don’t seem to leave a sufficient stock of toilet paper or paper towels, so you’ll need to get that from town in amounts likely far more than needed. Lot smaller than we expected, sleeping six is definitely a stretch for this place but for the four we had it was sufficient. While it might be standard practice, advertising a place sleeps six and charging almost $200 in extra guest fees for four people is very frustrating. The stairs were a LOT steeper than expected and when it rains, as it often does, they get super slippery and we fell multiple times, once very badly. The door downstairs doesn’t seal well and between that and the other gaps, lots of bugs came in during our stay. Not a major issue, but bothersome and seemingly not a crazy hard fix. Also full of fleas or bed bugs which made things pretty uncomfortable as well. Overall, for the adventurous on a budget, it’s a great place to stay, but if neither of these apply to you, proceed with caution.

The property had excellent views and was in a good location. It was easy to get to the grocery store, many beaches and bars/restaurants. There were a lot of bugs and we both got bit by no see ums quite a bit which made things a little uncomfortable. It would have been nice to have better bug repllant or maybe some candles to light.

Amazing views
The views from the deck are amazing! The cottage has everything that you need from cookware to toiletries and towels. Kat was amazing and made sure that we had everything we needed during our stay. We also used the snorkels that were provided at the property as well as the cooler. We packed lunches to have while at the beach and it was perfect. The only thing that I could possibly say negative about the cottage is the stairs. There are a lot of them so getting luggage up and down can be a little challenging, however, it was manageable and we were fully aware of the steps from other reviews. This property truly is great and was perfect for our family (kids ages 6 and 13)

Amazing views!
Loved our time here - amazing views, location, and value. Well equipped with effectively everything we needed for a comfortable stay! Only minor complaint would be we wished there were curtains or blinds for the lower level bedroom to block out the morning light (and keep it cooler!). Also a note to future guests: the tile on the screened-in porch gets VERY slippery when wet (don’t ask how we figured that out lol)

Phenomenal view
The Blue Wrasse was truly a one-of-a-kind property. A sweet little cottage to return to after long days exploring the island and all its offerings; beaches, ruins, history, cultural experiences. Our 3 little boys were snug in the downstairs bed and the kitchen futon and we slept in the loft. Of note, the loft is a low ceiling and a ladder up that we didn't think our kids could navigate for nighttime bathroom trips. We'd planned to use the toddler bed that we didn't find there, but we didn't ask about it and instead made do with the comfy futon. The AC and fans kept us cool at night + sweet morning sunrise to wake to. Burgers and smoothies on the deck one night - so memorable! Our middle kid celebrated his birthday while at the house - he will not forget blowing out candles with that view. Two full rainbows happened while at the cottage. We really appreciated the snorkel gear, sand toys and beach chairs - that saved us $ for sure. Our cistern was dry for 2-3 days so we had to strictly limit water use, but the property manager was so apologetic and kept us up to date about when the cistern would be filled. The island is having a drought, so know that you'll have to limit your showers and be creative to find laundry on the island (go on weekday early am to Cruz Bay - we had no luck in the afternoon). Considering the incomparable beaches, not too big a deal. The kitchen was very well appointed with spices, coffee, oils, great blender. We really prepped quickly for this trip so didn't realize that the roads were so steep everywhere (!!!) or, until pretty late realize that the water isn't potable on St. John (you need to buy water for drinking). It's an adventure! For all those traveling to St. John and planning to snorkel, please be warned that the full-face snorkel masks are very dangerous - there's so much to see under the water including fish, turtles, coral, eel!, squid, octopus, huge starfish, conch... make sure your snorkeling is a safe experience by using flotation devices for everyone, even strong swimmers. You never know if you might need to help out an inexperienced swimmer near you or hit a current. Waterlemon Cay was no joke with that current! Use snorkel masks that have a separate mouth and nose piece so that you can clear your mask easily. Don't miss: early am hike to Ram's Head! Our fave snorkel was at Salt Pond. Baby turtles and HS crabs everywhere!!! This trip was so memorable. Thanks for sharing your sweet cottage with us!

Blue Wrasse Cottage - up and downsides
Cottage has beautiful location and smartly-equipped kitchen. The deck is amazing and everything it was described to be. Beds are lumpy and not exceedingly comfortable. The toddler bed which had been pictured in marketing photos was in fact not available and a very inadequate, infant sized portable crib for our 3 year old was instead provided. My biggest concern is that we did not hear that the water was not potable until we landed (late) and could not be sure we were even going o get to a grocery store in time to have anything to drink after long parched journey. For a party of 6, this was an exceedingly inconvenient and wasteful (plastic wise especially with limited recycling on the island) "detail" and people should be informed of it with the overall property description to make a fair choice for their party. In contrast to some of the inadequacies, the property manger, Kate, was extremely responsive and helpful!

This is a little piece of heaven. Sitting out on the deck in the morning with my coffee was great while I watched the iguana sun himself in the nearby tree. BBQ'ing and watching the sunset were also very enjoyable. The swing is a nice touch to sit out in the evening and enjoy the weather. The bedroom was comfy and the outdoor shower was pretty cool. All in all, we enjoyed our time here very much and will definitely come back if possible!
