History:
Built in 1842 the historic Simmstown Manor has lots to offer. The house was originally built by Harvey McElroy for his daughter, Mariah McElroy Simpson. The original owners were devastated by the Civil War and the property was then sold to John Simms. John Simms had amassed a great amount of wealth prior to the war and unlike many others was able to sustain it during the war and use it to purchase the sizable brick mansion and the surrounding lands. After a few years he owned the 2400 acres surrounding the great house. The Simms family completed a two story wing on the north side of the house and moved in in 1868. The house held many grand parties and entertainments during the Simms’ time and often opened its doors to the most prosperous and socially prominent families around. When John Simms wife, Sarah Celclia Simms, died in 1895 he surveyed his 2400 acres of land and divided it among each of his five surviving children. His youngest child, Mary Simms Smith was given Simmstown as her part of the property divide and her father continued to live with her until his death. Upon Mr. Simms' death Mary kept the house and it was passed through the family until 1983 when Mr. and Mrs. E. O. Kelly Jr., the great grandson of Mr. Simms decided to sell the house to the current owner, Mr. Larry Hodge. The house and grounds both went through an extensive renovation with efforts to keep historical aspects in as many ways possible.

Note: The home has security cameras to monitor the driveway, as a safety precaution. (This is required to be disclosed to renters.)

Thanksgiving & a Bourbon Birthday
Our family consisted of eight adults arriving from SC, GA, and AL. We all were mesmerized by the Manor located on a quaint farm with retired horses and rolling hills. The home is quite spacious with stunningly decorated rooms. We utilized every room playing games in the front parlor and upstairs sitting room, the men played pool and watched football in the carriage house, and we all strolled outside and sat around the fire pit. The girls' favorite room with the elegant dining room with enormous windows and banquet dining room table. The kitchen was also spacious and an extremely easy place to work. We went to four distilleries, and loved returning to the Manor with the decor of horse champions and bourbon. The bedrooms were comfortable and elegant and all had bathrooms within a few steps of each. We were saturated in KY culture and loved the entire weekend including our sprinkling of snow on the last day.

Simply amazing
We spent a long weekend here with adult family (party of 8) celebrating a 50th birthday on the bourbon trail & Keeneland. The manor seemed a good place to land in between activities. But once we got here, we realized that just staying in at this magnificent property would have been sufficient for an incredible time! The photos don't do this property justice! it is stately, glamorous and elegant but also homely and comfortable. There's so much to do to enjoy Kentucky in just the borders of this property: walks on the grounds, runs on the trails, visit the horses, sit on the deck and sip a coffee watching the sun rise over the fields, cook a gourmet dinner then feast in style in a magnificent dining room, sit and curl up with a book or your friend in the stately drawing room, sip bourbon by the fire pit, sip beer in the games room in front of a huge TV while playing pool, or just sleep in within the confines of a four poster bed. We celebrated in style with a personal chef one night that our host, Larry, helped us organize. Thoroughly recommend this! The hosts couldn't be more gracious and helpful. Check in and check out was a breeze and we felt like their guests who they were striving to keep comfortable (there weren't those obnoxious messages left everywhere about don't do this or that, or don't touch this or that everywhere which you usually find at VRBO's). I certainly hope we can find our way back to this magnificent property in the near future. Thank you for hosting us!!!

Wonderful home. Historic, yet has all the amenities you need. Very quiet and comfortable. Great place to return to after a day on the trail. Would highly recommend Chef Gwyn. Excellent food, and she will cook about anything you desire. We loved the dog that was on the property. She was alert, and we felt we had a guard at all times. Hosts very helpful and responsive to requests. Will definetly stay again if our bourbon supply runs low!

50th Birthday
Amazing first impression! Photos are accurate but there is so much more to see in person. The house is gorgeous and the renovations are great for modern times while keeping the spirit of the age of the house. The property is kept photo ready. Beautiful sunsets, horses, a mini lake, patios, spiral staircase and more. One critique… It says it sleeps 12 w/ the carriage house, just know the beds are small in the carriage house and the 3rd room does not have a bathroom of convenience. The bedrooms in the main house are large with nice beds and plenty of room to spread out in the many sitting rooms. Large tables for games, a nice bar and fully equipped kitchen. Location is perfect as well for an easy drive to many sites and distilleries. The host goes above and beyond to make you feel welcome. We highly recommend!

Annual Work family trip
Small group of us 6 couple in total gather annually somewhere with spouses to spend 3-4 days together. This year was Bourbon Trail and this historic home was the perfect place to be before and after the trail. Kitchen was well equipped for throwing together dinner and breakfast along with the long tables for serving and dining. The grill worked well also. We utilized the entire home and refurbished garage area. The house was super hot in the upstairs 2 bedrooms due to the air conditioner needing service and Larry was right on it. They brought us fans to use to pull air from the hall ways into those bedrooms and worked like a charm. I would recommend a fan outside on the porch to keep bugs and flies at bay- very helpful keeping that area comfortable. All in all we love the place, only draw back is that one bedroom doesn't have a bathroom so middle nigh needs to you to go outside to get to the house.

Gorgeous house and grounds
We stayed here with a group of 6 couples for a Bourbon Trail trip. The house was amazing and we especially loved the game room in the carriage house. We also took the owner's suggestion and booked Chef Gwyn for a private dinner which was so worthwhile. Enjoyed taking a walk by the pond and over to visit with the horses. Hope to visit again someday!

Absolutely gorgeous interior and furniture! The grounds were beautiful, beds were very comfortable and huge jacuzzi in bathroom. Enjoyed the large dining room and living room for gathering and laughing. Perfect location for the Bourbon Trail and also enjoyed the restaurants/shopping in Bardstown. Graduation Party weekend
My family rented this property to celebrate my son's graduation. We rent 5 or more VRBO properties per year and none is as nice as this property. Each room is a work of art. The mansion is a working horse and cattle farm and it was wonderfully relaxing just to watch. While we spent a great deal of time doing all the surrounding activities, we could not wait to return to this property just to continue to explore all the nooks and crannies. The house is filled with history, the architecture is wonderful, and the experience of staying in an authentic Kentucky mansion is not to be missed.

Manager’s Retreat
I am the Director of a non profit program for children. This is the second year that I have taken my managers (all ladies) on a work retreat. WOW what an amazing property! A well preserved and restored piece of history with ALL the modern comforts. We had a wonderful 3 night stay at the Manor. The vote is for us to return here again next year!

Wonderful extended family getaway
Our group of 9 (ages 4 to 77) rented the main house and the carriage house. We had plenty of room and everything felt clean. The house is just as gorgeous as the photos show. My daughter loved sleeping in her “princess bed” and keeps asking when we can go back to the manor. One day my husband drove around the area searching for bourbon that he can’t find in South Carolina. He came home with many new bottles. Mostly we just enjoyed the property and family time by walking around the grounds, making s’mores in the fire pit, interacting with the horses and cows, and playing soccer and board games. This is a special place.

Best house ever
The pictures don’t do this beautiful property justice. If you think it’s beautiful in pictures you need to see it in person. I’ve found a lot of hidden gems on VRBO but this is the best. We celebrated my husband’s 40th anniversary with 11 people total. The extra house gave us the perfect amount of rooms and a great place to hang out.

Fabulous Bourbon Trail Getaway
Simmstown Manor exceeded our expectations in every way! The house is beautifully furnished and the grounds were immaculate. Our large group enjoyed the outdoor patio and the many sitting areas inside. We cooked meals in the well equipped kitchen and dined in the large dining room. Simmstown Manor is near all of the popular distilleries, horseracing, historical landmarks, and Mammoth Caverns.

Stunning property!
This manor exceeded our expectations! The rooms were huge and well decorated with antiques. The grounds were beautiful and spacious. We came to visit distilleries and decided to cancel our plans Sat evening in Bardstown in order to come back to the house and enjoy our surroundings. A bit off the beaten path but offered secluded country setting for our party.

Beautiful home with deep history
When you first walk into the home you can sense the great care given to this home. It has all the character of a home built in the mid 1800’s but with the conveniences of a modern day home. I do not want to exclude the remarkable land this home sits on. Too much to describe, but you will love the moment you reach the peak of the mound in the back of the property. Our group had a wonderful time and we felt honored to stay in such a lovely home.
