Convenient location with helpful staff. The hotel has been around for a long time, a classic example of “old Shanghai”.

The hotel is in a well-maintained historical building. The amenities are enough for a short stay. The service is not warm but adequate. There is no elevator to the lobby. I carried my suitcases to the second floor.

JingAn Hotel
This hotel has a nice location. But the hotel is too old and lacks proper maintenance. The room is big but smells. In addition to the hardware issues, the services were not complimentary. There are over a dozen steps from the hotel gate to the lobby. There is no elevator or ramp. I asked the lady at the check-in desk to get me a bellman, but in vain. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. There are 4 other hotels in the block, Kunlun and Equatorial are more expensive, but Shanghai Hotel offers competitive rate and Companiel is even cheaper.

switch and bait
Book two rooms at one hotel Jin Jan and get switched into a sister hotel of lesser quality. Not the right size bed, the AC won't work, run down and showing its age, and extra fees for just about everything (the elevator was free). Get no help from Expedia, called two times, only to get the run around, and gee I don't see what the big deal is. Ugh. Never will I stay here, and I probably will never use Expedia again. There customer service not only was not helpful, they seem ok with it. What a scam. To top it off the bell men put us in a taxi running a con, the oops I forgot to reset the meter. Other hotel on our stay tell you the price of the cab. On a positive the bar tender in the lobby bar made one of the best margaritas I have had.

Location is great and it ends there.
Hotel is literally behind a major international American brand. It is a good location but unfortunately for this property it is old and tired. The upholestry on the furniture is tearing, the "gym" cardio equipment (1980s stuff) is in disrepair and the staff are grumpy and unhelpful.

Great Little Spot of Quiet in Shanghai
This hotel is a quaint, historic building with larger rooms that are a bit worn, but clean and comfortable. They do not have a restaurant on site but there are many in the area. It is part of the Shanghai hotel next door and they have various restaurants and the Hilton hotel on the other side does as well. For the price this hotel is a great value. I came for a business meeting and the internet here was stronger than in other hotels I have stayed in.

Not as bad as first impression.
The 1st impression of this hotel is quite bad. The hotel has 2 buildings with a few minutes walking apart. The booking does not say which building I should check-in at. I am staying in the old building which is known as the better building. The hotel public area is sort of antique, but the hotel room is very OLD with outdated renovation. The hotel lobby area is sort of dark and old looking. Someone may have smoke in the hallway, and passed some smell into my room. With a 4-stars hotel in mind, it does not meet my expectation. Well... For the price I paid, I appreciate the "good side" of the Jing An hotel too. The hotel room is very large. It got all in-room amenities that I would expected for a 4-star hotel (in-room saver, free bottle water, all toiletries and bath robe etc. The hotel staffs are friendly (p.s.> I can speak the local language.). The speed of the RMB$39 per night wifi is actually in reasonable speed that my wife can use it to do some office work. The location of the hotel is excellent with 24 by 7 convenience store right outside the hotel, and lots of options on restaurant nearby. Subway is about 10 minutes walk. Located in between of a modern part and antique part of Shanghai.

Great location, Musty smelling rooms
The only good thing going for this hotel is the location. Front desk personnel speaks english poorly and is not helpful in assisting for basic tasks like ordering a taxi at the correct time. Could not exchange money either. The first room had a terrible musty stuffy smell, we changed rooms but the new room also had the same smell. If you can swing it book at the Hilton right next door.

Older hotel but not a problem - almost like an art deco style. Still clean and a massive bed. Easy access to lots of places to eat and not too far from the metro and lots of shopping/

Hotel is old andiscussion not to our standard.
Checked in and realized we had definately booked at the wrong hotel. The night manager was amazingly helpful and cooperative and transferred us to a more modern sister hotel. The Shanghai which made our stay incredible.

We will not come back
We got to the hotel to find out that they don't have the room with two double beds we ordered, in fact, they don't have a room like this at all! Not sure why we got this option on hotels.com! The hotel told us to call the agent!!! At the end we got an extra bed free of charge. The rooms are very old, disgusting carpet. Everything is so old, even the bed linen. At night I kept feeling there are bugs walking over me... Room service was OK. I will not go back.

Roaches but the building is a diamond in the ruff.
This is a great Moorish building from 1926. As minimal work has been done to the building since 1926 a lot of original details are intact. Staff did their best. This place was clearly state owned for many years. Building needs a loving renovation. Bathroom needed to be cleaned. My room had small brown roaches. Wish I could buy the building and put some work into it.

Historical hotel, poor service
Beware, you may get cold shoulder treatment. When we arrived, the hotel ran out of room. It 'up graded' us -- for one night, ONLY. It was a real hassle that we have to pack up again, the next day. The clark had a long face that evening when we checked in. The nice young lady, Ms Zhao, next day was very pleasent. After we complained and she called the manager, we were granted a 'stay' -- in the same room. We also had similar experience with the front door people; one was extremely helpful finding us a taxi, the other two -- long faces. Hotel has a fabulous garden and magnificant architecture -- all but a tid bit smoky damp. You'll have your judgement.

Great location but hotel is a little worn in
The location of the hotel is great and the price is right. This is my second time staying at Jing An Hotel and I've stayed in two different rooms there. The hotel is a bit older and a bit worn in. The staff keeps it clean but it's evident that the hotel is older. Hotel is tucked behind other buildings so there is very little road noise. Plan to stay there again providing the price is still competitive.
