Owner refused access until guest provided PII
I reserved this house for Christmas with my sister and her husband, as the rest of our family lives nearby in Richmond. I have a dog and was excited to find a dog friendly stay. I became too sick to travel the day before the trip. On the day of check in, the access information was still not available at 2:45pm when the home was to be available at 4:00pm, and when just a day prior the owner stated that he would provide access information the morning of check in. I let owner know that I was very sick and that my dog and I would not be traveling and asked if he could provide the access information soon since I did not know how much longer I would be awake. The owner told me that since I would not be there, that my sister or her husband had to provide him with a copy of their photo ID, which I immediately questioned. I have never been asked to provide my photo ID for any VRBO booking and it was not a requirement for this booking, nor was it stated anywhere in the listing that a photo ID would be required. I informed him that his request was concerning because of what I just stated as well as the fact that a photo ID contains PII and he wanted me to transmit that over an unsecure platform. His response was flippant at best, he merely stated that it was his right to do so because it’s his home. He would not provide access information until we did so. This was the day before Christmas Eve, we had already paid for this home so our hands were tied. My sister provided her photo ID and at 6:45 pm, 2 hours and 45 minutes after the check in time, we were provided with access information. The owner is kind of a jerk. I’ve never been treated in such a manner when using VRBO or any other rental service.
