About this property

Country house with sea view

The Country House Casa da Laranja was built by the end of the 18th century as the residence and storehouse of the plantation superintendent of an orange plantation. At that time, fresh oranges were brought to England and France by sail ships.
The garden has access to the surrounding meadows where cows graze occasionally.
From the terraces on the West and East side of the house are both the volcanic mountain ranges of Lagoa das Sete Cidades and Lagoa do Fogo to be seen. You can also see the North coast, the Bay of Ribeira Grande and even the highest mountain Pico da Vara.
In the morning you can have breakfast on the terrace with these wide views and in the evening enjoy the sunsets. All rooms have access to a terrace.
The house has two bedrooms one with a double bed and one with two single beds. A reading room with sofa and desk is also available, not as bedroom however.
The large kitchen with fireplace is equipped with all necessary features and like all the other rooms with a view of the coast line and the sea.
The house has central heating for the winter months, although de temperatures on the subtropical island in the average rarely fall below 11°C.
Due to the relatively central location of the house all the interesting points of the island are easily accessible by car.
Shops and supermarkets are in the Ponta Delgada, Capelas or Pico da Pedra.
From the house you can go for walks, always with the mountains and the Atlantic Ocean in view.
The proximity to the Batalha Golf Course offers golf enthusiasts a good starting point, without much travel time (3-4 min) to reach the greens with splendid views to the blue ocean background.

The offer for nature lovers such as: swimming, surfing, sailing, horseback riding, whale and dolphin watching, scuba diving, snorkeling, hiking, fishing, swimming in waterfalls, canyoning, etc., are almost limitless. To describe all of this is beyond the scope of this brief introduction. There are good guides on the internet or books to prepare for your visit.

Casa da Laranja offers a comfortable and convenient base for an exciting, relaxing and unforgettable stay on the Azores islands.

Best vacation rental ever
When we saw the posting of the house, we booked our vacation dates to the only multi-day opening that was available. The actual stay surpassed everything we could hope for from the description. An absolute highlight: Spending evenings on the patio with a panoramic view of the Atlantic and the landscape. Another highlight: Mario, the owner, who welcomed us in person and, on another day, gave us an extended tour of the plantation. An absolute dream vacation. Thank you!!

Beautiful House!
This is a lovely house in an idyllic setting. Convenient to the sites and restaurants but in the peace and quiet of the country. Marco provided excellent restaurant recommendations and a list of must see spots which was appreciated. The house was spacious and comfortable even on a rainy day.

Fantastic spacious property, great views and host
We stayed in this property for two weeks as a family group of two adults and two children (5 and 8 yrs). Fantastic communication from the host throughout booking and our stay. It was our first time on the island, so great to have such a welcome. More than enough room for us. A sea breeze meant the property stayed cool and comfortable. As we were self-catering, we would have benefited from an oven (as others have mentioned) but this was easy to work around with the BBQ and hob. Thanks for your hospitality Marco. Sao Miguel is an amazing island with so much to offer and I'm sure we will be back.

A perfect get away
We wanted a peaceful place with character and views. This was perfect. The photos do not entirely do it justice. It is a rustic European house with very tasteful furnishings. It was perfect for a couple and probably a couple with children. It had what we needed and Marco was very helpful and responsive. It was easy to get to Ponta DelGada and other places we wanted to visit. We were very sorry to leave.

Beautiful 18th century stone cottage with a view!
We enjoyed our stay at Marco's cottage. We particularly enjoyed the view from the terrace which was wonderful. The house has charm and provides all the necessities for an enjoyable stay. Marco was a great host with lots of suggestions for sightseeing and restaurants on the island. Thank you for the tour of the pineapple plantation and your stories about the history of the property, Marco!

Charming House at great location
We had a wonderful stay in the charming house. Greeting/Communication by Marco was great and he provided some great tips for the Island. The house has a lot of character, beeing 200 years old but it is wonderfully renovated with all required amenities (we even found a little dishwasher). Its a very peaceful area and we loved having breakfast on the spacious front porch with great views to the north and east of the island. Hope we can go there again!

Rustic house with spectacular views
Bucolic setting, amazing views in all directions, comfortable stone house with 2 great patios overlooking gardens and pastures. Hiking in area was easy. There is no oven nor a usable barbeque, but the gas stove top was wonderful to use. Would recommend this as a lovely getaway home.

Cozy stone jouse
The house was spacious, very comfortable and very clean. The terraces were perfect and the yard gated. The area is quiet and beautiful!!! Marco was available anytime through whatsapp and his parents live across the lane. The location is central to the whole island. A short trip to anywhere really. There is a grocery store 5 minutes away by car. Riviera grande is 10 minutes and PortaDelgada is only maybe 20 minutes. I would highly recommend staying here!!!

A beautiful island
Marco was a great host. The property was in a great location for exploring the island and had great views. We had a fantastic week; whale watching, swimming with dolphins, hiking to waterfalls, swimming in thermal pools and the hot sea pool in Ferrari was an amazing experience! Our lasting memory will be the beautiful landscape and the roads lined with hydrangeas and agapanthus. Our most enjoyable restaurant experience was the Solar o Rei dos Francois in Sao Vicente about 5 mins drive away.

LOVED being here!
This old stone house is solid, simple and beautiful. Surrounded by lush green fields of grass, with cows grazing in some of them. Views to the sea and mountains. A 360 degree sense of being in Eden. Terraces on two sides of the house give you sunrises and sunsets. It was a great location for island explorations in any direction. Central to all. And we did many things during our 10 day stay. We went to all ends of the island and explored towns and lakes and Furnas and Sete Cidades calderas, seaside swim spots, restaurants, Ponta Delgada. Many miradouras (overlooks). Many natural piscinas (sea pools). Kayaked in the lakes. So much beauty! The house itself is not fancy. Simply furnished, basics. But that gave it the allure we loved. Just enough, not too much. When we arrived cows were grazing directly in front of the house in one of the stone walled pastures. We were in awe. They are beautiful! This does mean you may smell cows, and have a few flies. Being a farm girl from Washington State, this did not bother me. I was sad when the cows were moved to new grazing elsewhere. The house also requires you to turn on the water heater to get hot water each time needed. And the bathroom is a bit sour. But after a day there those details disappear because you are eager to awake and see the view and bask in how marvelous it is! There were times we stayed home, just to be there, taking it all in. Living there, as if Azorean, instead of heading out. We walked the small gravel roads, and through the grassy fields. We were glad we had our 10 days, and would have liked a few more. The beds are very firm, as others have noted. No spices or cooking basics, if you plan to cook. The umbrella stand was broken, but we improvised with rocks and had the shade we desired. Marco's parents live nearby and are wonderful. You will feel lucky if you get to meet them. We plan to return. We truly loved it there and were very sorry to leave!

Beautiful surroundings
The house is very private and surroundings are very quiet. The Views from the porch are truly beautiful. We enjoyed our time on the porch , drinking coffee in the morning watching the sunrise and in the evening watching the sunset. The house is comfortable and warm. Some things that might make this a 5 star would be more amenities. Beach towels to use at the hot springs, more comfortable beds, TV, Better Ice trays. Just to mention a few. Marco was very responsive to our needs, however, we never needed to call for anything at anytime during our stay. Thank you Marco for the opportunity to stay in your home.

Wonderful stone cottage in the Azores
We had a wonderful time on Sao Miguel in the Azores in February no less with a 5 night stay at this wonderful stone cottage with amazing views of the Atlantic and surrounding verdant hills. Marco was a wonderful and accommodating host, greeting us when we arrived and ensuring everything in the house was in working order. We especially appreciated the internet which was a mobile hotspot for our adventures. The house has lots of room and amenities making our stay a relaxing one. It was easy to get around the island from this central location. Markets, cafes, bakeries, and restaurants were in easy driving distance from the house. I highly recommend this house for your vacation getaway on Sao Miguel.

A beautiful characterful house with lovely views and lots of space.
We had a lovely stay in this beautiful house. We spent every evening on the terrace looking out at the island and the sea. The beds were comfy and there was plenty of space for us and our 2 young boys - even a reading room that quickly became our monopoly-playing space! The host, Marcos, was so helpful - he even came to find us when we got lost looking for the house on the first evening (mobile phone issues!) and then gave us a lovely tour of the pineapple plantation behind the house. The only thing we missed was an oven but there was a good stove and also a BBQ so plenty of scope for cooking. The house is in a good central location for visiting the various sites on the island. Would definitely recommend.

Gorgeous setting!
Of all of the Sao Miguel properties, I chose this one because of the spectacular views—and they were even better in person. We saw lots of stars at night, more than at home, and the daytime views were almost too beautiful to be real. We walked the gravel road behind the house and loved the stone walls, Morning Glory, dairy cow pastures (one on the property!), and hydrangeas. I took about a million pictures. The patios were wonderful. Inside, the cottage was very spacious and private, with lovely scenery out every window and door, and vistas all the way to the sea. The furnishings were basic, as others have said, and the bed was on the hard side. We had to buy salt & pepper for the kitchen, and there is a full flight of stone stairs to the front door, so this place may not be appropriate if you have mobility issues. We loved the location and explored nearly the whole island in a week.

This home took my breath away!
As we pulled up the road to our home, I just gasped when I saw it! This old cottage was nothing less than spectacular. The interior was spacious and cozy with ample sitting space for relaxing and the kitchen was very inviting complete with wood hearth for cool evenings. The balcony off the living room and kitchen offered the most beautiful views of the surrounding countryside and ocean. Each bedroom had access to a beautiful balcony and depending on the time of day, we made use of all the outdoor space. Marco was the most gracious host answering all our questions, suggesting activities and was genuinely interested in our well-being. We walked from the cottage to town and in the surrounding fields but were able able to explore all of Sao Miguel from this central location. There was so much to see and do on this island that a return trip, rarely on our "to do list" is definitely in our future.

It is what is says....'Romantic house with sea views'
This is a lovely house, full of character, all rooms are spacious with beautiful high wooden beam vaulted ceilings. Furniture is simple and tasteful, in keeping with the house. Great shower although bathroom could do with a little makeover, the sink was a little awkward to use due to position of taps but not a problem. We ate in 4 of our 7 nights as it was such a lovely environment to savour. The kitchen is very well equipped although no oven. There is a long terrace either side, one for sunsets (although not fully), the other for terrific sunrises. Beautiful flowers in the gardens, the views very relaxing and far better than we expected. Candles and flowers on the kitchen table very much appreciated, plus the information leaflets in one of the lounges....nice touches. Our greeting was very welcoming and we felt instantly at home. The position is very peaceful, in a quiet lane with just 2 houses the other side. It is an easy 15 minute to drive to Ponta Delegada where there are numerous restaurants and about the same to Ribiera Grande. There is a good beach approx 10 mins on the north coast just before Ribiera Grande called Santa Barbara (white sign) which also has a good restaurant with sea views. If you are travelling on the south coast between Lagoa and Vila Franca there is a fabulous fish restaurant overlooking the sea at Ponta da Caloura. Driving was very easy and there is so much to see, all the lakes, forests, coasts, tea plantation, hot springs and the hydrangeas along the roadsides are a wonderful picture. We had a fabulous week, so many astounding views and a peaceful haven to return to each night, very special. Thoroughly recommend. Two regrets......firstly not going on a whaling/dolphin trip and secondly not taking up Marcos kind offer of a tour of the pineapple plantation .....another time.
