About this property

TROPICAL LIVING-WALK TO BEACH-DECK IN TREETOP-OPEN VERANDA- EXOTIC LOCATION

Sweet Spot's Tiki and Treetop House, one of two places on this 1 1/2 acre estate, is an breezy airy abode that is adorned with distinctive hand crafted touches and artwork. Large deck built into the treetop behind the house is epic and the property has fiber-optic allowing for remote work. Located in a quiet neighborhood with walks that will take you to a ocean cliffside park and world famous Kehena Black Sand (clothing optional) beach. Dolphins frequent the bay. In the winter months expect to see whales offshore.

Eco-Astro Tourism destination. The Milky Way is fully visible to the naked eye. Lay on your back and watch satellites and shooting stars zip by. During the larger phases of the moon you will not need a flash light to walk around outside.

Tikis and Treetops is two-room studio made up of a main room, a kitchen/dining area and big lanai/porch, which in Hawaii is the outdoor room and all together gives the place an indoor/outdoor feel that is tropical style living. The showers are outdoor but private and guest rave about them. One is under the sky and solar heated, one is under the branches of a tree surrounded by tropical plants.
Special care was taken to select, mill and install wood trim that is just gorgeous to look at with mango, koa, cedar, and redwood that creates art with wood. I have collected wooden masks, statuary, and artworks from Africa, Polynesia, Asia and the Middle East. The stuff you write home about. There is also a solar heated homemade hot tub that is a cozy fit for two out and under the stars.

The property dips, curves and drops, and flows in a most unusual topography. This is a very out-of-the-norm place that is called the Sweet Spot because people who visited said, "This is a sweet spot." So, not I, but those who have been here, named the place.

You have to see it to believe and it was my love of the land and 16 years to put the lots together to form this one of a kind geologically puzzle, to create a one-of-a-kind vacation destination. Fruit, nut trees, and exotic flowers adorn the grounds. Having lived in this neighborhood for 30 years I can say without doubt, there is nothing else like this place in the area.

You will be in a 100% off-the-grid solar-driven house! Something also to write home about. The property is populated with over two dozen food-bearing trees. Coconut, limes, breadfruit, sugar cane, avocado, coffee, cacao, cherry, grapefruit, star more.
The neighborhood is charming with a walk to stunning coastline and a black sand beach in Kehena Bay that is frequented by dolphins and whales in the wintertime.

Check out Uncle Robert's Night Market and live music open air, music event. Saturday Farmer's Market is a must next to the same location. Sunday Funday on the Seaview lawn with a huge drumming circle and fantastic view of the ocean. The coastal road is one of the most beautiful drives on the entire island winding along through tree tunnels and overhanging vines that grace your drive. Warm ponds are but 20 minutes away and 25 minutes away is the town of Pahoa which is as colorful as a tropical flower. A variety of restaurants from Lugiun's Mexican, Paulo's Italian, Kaleo's Fusion, Ning's Thai, Mighty Sushi, Black Rock American Cafe, and full-blown bakery called the Tin Shack.
This is what Hawaii looked like 50 to 75 years ago. Come and really unwind, slow down, chill out and hang loose in one of the coolest scenes in all the islands. There is no place like Lower Puna.

If you are looking for a 'tourist' destination this isn't it. If you are looking for what its like to live in Hawaii, close to nature, inspired by the surroundings, breathing in some of the cleanest air in the world, getting in touch with slowing down and taking in the beauty of old Hawaii, then this is the right place. Its a vacation you will never forget. It will always have a Sweet Spot in your memories

Not quite what was promised
Many of the amenities listed were not available and were discouraged - such as a toaster or hair dryer. We were prepared for a rustic stay but the gecko poop on all of the furnishings and kitchen facilities was disappointing. Also, the cockroaches and mice were not great either. By the time we left we had cleaned up a lot of the place and it was a great area. Close to the water and not too far of a drive to town. You do need a car. The caretaker was mostly helpful and lives on the property.

Grateful
I am very grateful for the valuable time and effort placed into a home to be used to help share one of the most beautiful places I get to visit on this earth. I did not cook much- my budget afforded me the local eats on the island. We visited the hot springs about 15 minutes from the house, we went to Hilo and ziplined the KoleKole. One night we stayed on the other side of the island- much busier! There we went hiking and snorkeling at Captain Cook and saw Volcano National Park. We did a dinner cruise and snorkeled with manta rays. I followed my spirit and went with the flow and I am painfully back home trying to keep that energy going in my daily life. I hope to one day return- the bed was comfortable, the shower was awesome, the plants and animals and the overall happiness of the area made this unforgettable and I will forever be grateful.

Cozy
Nice little cozy spot away from the big city. The only down side was that it's a bit of a drive to some of the ocean activities that we had planed. Otherwise we enjoyed it.

A great unique sweet spot!
The Sweet Spot was a great experience. An old- the-grid spot away from the hustle and bustle of life with the sounds of nature. (My man thought it was loud at night but I loved it…natures white noise machine!) Lots of unique decor from around the world that gave the spot a very authentic feel. We really enjoyed the large lanai for coffee in the morning and drinks in the evenings. The property Nene came up to visit everyday which was awesome!! The outdoor shower isn’t for everyone, but we quite enjoyed it to round out the experience. Also, note that you need to drive a bit to get to destinations so if you don’t want to drive a lot I’d recommend something closer to town. Checkin and checkout instructions were minimal but we just winged it and all is good. Michael was quick to respond to my messages and the property managers were an easy message away if we needed anything. Overall, I’d recommend staying at the Sweet Spot for an authentic stay on the island!! Mahalo Michael for your hospitality!

Get Away From It All
This is a special property: no resorts or fancy shopping near by. This is a quiet neighbourhood with local markets, home-grown produce, weekly drumming gatherings, and ride sharing. The property descriptions are accurate. The house had everything we needed with an inside-outside living arrangement and resident outdoor friendly cat. We spent a lot of time relaxing on the deck, had our morning coffee in the screened-in kitchen, and loved the bird and frog calls. Living off of the grid means awareness of sunshine so plenty of hot water was available later in the day for the outdoor shower. This is a true get away from it all kind of vacation. There are several used book stores in Hilo so stock up.

Best family trip ever
If you enjoy off grid living surrounded by beautiful plants and birds, this is the place for you. The kids especially enjoyed catching and releasing frogs and geckos. We had a wonderful time.

Magical part of Hawaii - but house maintence, attention to detail, privacy was less then expected.
Cleanliness was sub par... kitchen island, kitchen fridge, under the couch, under the bed all needed a good sweep and scrub (dead fruitflies in the fridge, food crumbs under the kitchen island, dust bunnies under furniture). Screens on Windows and screen door had tears and holes. Outdoor shower had great water pressure and temperature but you are on full display to the neighborhood when showering. Property was 3 to 4 yards from the residential road with little privacy barrier - little street traffic beyond the neighbors but many walkers in the morning hours. Can walk to the black sand beach just 10 min away which is an ideal spot for the sunrises. Recent lava flow is accessible just further down hwy 130 which is a must see. Nice gas BBQ on the patio - we asked for a new tank after our first night but it was never filled/replaced. There was no broom accessible to allow us to clean the floor surfaces. Meow meow is cute and smart.

A little piece of Heaven in Hawai'i
Marlin's little cottage was everything we'd hoped for and more. We were welcomed at the door by Meow, the lovely Tuxedo puss, who was a big attraction to us when we read of her presence in a previous review. She was so affectionate and continued to keep us company throughout our stay. A quietly calming co-tenant who reminded us to slow down and soak up the rays. The property is nestled in a neighbourhood of beautiful homes, from the huge and luxurious, to rustic and more symbolic of the real 'old Hawai'i' we wanted to experience. The size of the land around the cottage and the tall trees, combine to give a feeling of space and separation from the usual hubbub of a neighbourhood, while being only a ten minute walk from the famous Kahena beach and the spectacularly wild coastline of the south Puna district. The lava was not flowing this time and the volcano was quieter than it has been in decades, so we were treated to the cleanest air in many a long year along with crystal clear nights of a billion stars. The outdoor tub was wonderful to relax in while spotting constellations and watching for shooting stars. Falling asleep to the sound of crashing waves and singing frogs and waking to birds and sunshine was a real treat for us who are well worn down by the clamorous chaos of city life. Wandering the property marveling at the tropical plants, picking amazing things to eat and sharing breakfast with Gold Dust Geckos was incredible and showering outdoors amongst the sprawling branches of the extraordinary Monkey Pod tree was magical. This was a truly restorative experience and one not to be missed if you have the chance to venture a little further from the madding crowd.

Sweet Spot
This house is just south of Pahoa, a neat little town on the Hilo side. The kitchen is a little sparse and don't expect chocolates on the pillow, but it's a great place to just relax and kick back. You can walk to the ocean and see lava tubes, and there is a great little black sand beach just down the road. Don't miss the Wednesday music/market at Uncle Robert's, or a trip out to the lava flow going into the ocean. Kapona tidal pools are close by and have great snorkeling. Marlin was a generous host with lots of local knowledge. I would recommend it for a taste of island style.

Off the grid gorgeous property in great location
When the tux cat named Meow greeted us immediately, we knew we were in a great place and the right place (it's hard to find in the dark but what place isn't?!). Marlin was a great communicator and so happy to show us the sweet spots on his property. He even showed us how to fill up the tub for a star gazing soak and gave us some soursop that he just picked from his tree. Try the grapefruit tree if soursop isn't your thing. There's no cell service, but there's internet. The outdoor shower is what you'd expect from an outdoor shower - it's enclosed and gets you clean. There's another outdoor shower by the monkey pod tree but that one's not enclosed - we used it to rinse off the salt water from snorkeling at the tide pools down the awesome jungle road or from swimming at Kahena Black Sand Beach (about a 10 min walk). If you're there on Wednesday, it is a must to visit Uncle Roberts with their night market, live music and dancing, awa bar, great food vendors and a lava field parking lot. In the evenings, we'd sit on the front porch swing and listen to the frogs - even saw an owl swoop down by the pond. Marlin will help your stay mean something and caters to who is staying there with advice, tips and hospitality. We always felt safe there but there was no way to lock up officially -- he might be getting keys in the future? Something to check on if you're worried about that sort of thing. Also, the deep freezer holds his ice for his ice box so he'll have to grab some occasionally. The sun powered hot water was HOT and there always seemed to be enough power. The huge oscillating fan above the bed was perfect to cool down the room before bedtime. Pahoa town is a 15-20 min drive away if you want more civilization like a record store, shops and restaurants. In all, this was a great place to stay for our Big Island lava and black sand beach adventures.
