Splash Cottage is a two-bedroom granite-built cottage set within Dartmoor National Park in the hamlet of Ponsworthy, near the village of Widecombe-in-the-Moor. Peacefully set at the end of a row of picturesque, thatched cottages with a quaint ford running across the road, this holiday home has plenty of charm and character and offers a unique escape with spectacular surroundings.
The most famed beauty spot and well-loved ancient tor, Haytor Rock, is just a 13-minute drive away. Whether on foot or on bike, there are endless routes straight from the doorstep and the more adventurous may wish to tackle the rugged and dramatic Dartmoor Tors. As you head into the cottage you will enter into cosy living and dining area which showcases beautiful beamed ceilings, comfortable seating, a Smart TV with freesat and Sky and a wood burner (the first bundle of logs and kindling are provided). Gather your friends and family around the dining table for a celebratory meal. The well equipped kitchen has everything needed for your home cooking, including an electric oven, electric hob, fridge/freezer, dishwasher and a microwave. This then leads through to the utility area which has a washing machine, and the only bathroom in the property with a shower over the bath, toilet and sink.
Sit outside and enjoy the sun in the garden with its outdoor seating and garden furniture. This is the perfect spot to plan your adventurous day ahead over a morning coffee. There are two comfortable bedrooms on the first floor, one with a standard double bed and the other with a zip and link king-size bed which can be set-up with 2ft 6in twin beds if requested.
The cottage is based directly adjacent to the Two Moors Way footpath, popular with walkers and offers a 116-mile coast-to-coast trail linking Wembury in South Devon to Lynmouth in North Devon. Steeped in folklore, Widecombe-in-the-Moor is just 2.3 miles away and is widely known as Dartmoor’s most famous village with the spectacular moorland and tors rising up on all sides, making it a perfect location for walkers, mountain bikers, riders, bird watchers or those that love dramatic landscapes. The village is made up of a mixture of granite-built houses and a lovely old church known as the ‘cathedral of the moor’. There are a couple of good food pubs, a café for cream teas and gift shops. A 15-minute drive brings you to the charming town of Ashburton, with its independent shops, antique shops and cafés.
The Southwest coastal path and the local beaches of Teignmouth, Shaldon and Dawlish are around a 40-minute drive away. Day trips to the beaches in the South Hams such as Blackpool Sands and Goodrington Beach also offer a great alternative for a fun day-out and they are within an hour’s drive. Bovey Castle is 15 minutes’ drive away, Gidleigh Park is 25 minutes, 45 minutes from the cathedral city of Exeter and 30 minutes to Tavistock. Splash Cottage offers a peaceful escape for anyone wishing to explore this beautiful part of the world.
