COMPASS HOUSE
AREA
Mulmur Township is a small bit of heaven tucked away at the northeast corner of Dufferin County, about an hour northwest of Toronto. Straddled by the famous Niagara Escarpment, the area is filled with rich farmlands above the escarpment, steep slopes and river valleys surrounded by extensive forest along the escarpment, and rolling plains and rural land below the escarpment. Just north of Mulmur is the town of Creemore with its many restaurants, shops, and the brewery. Also in close proximity to many ski clubs including Mansfield or a little farther to Devil's Glen Country Club. Take a day trip to Collingwood or Blue Mountain for many activities and amenities!
PROPERTY
COMPASS HOUSE sits at the top of a hill on a rolling 200-acre property. The secluded site offers complete privacy, country views, and is sheltered from winds blowing across the plateau of the Escarpment. This modern farmhouse, designed by the Toronto architecture firm, Superkül, is seemingly dropped in the middle of a large field, surrounded by strands of hardwood forest including a birch grove. Reminiscent of vernacular-style long barns from the English countryside, this entirely white structure has a low roofline that blends into the snowy fields in the wintertime but in other seasons, is a glowing contrast to the golden field and verdant wooded surroundings. The large property features plenty of outdoor areas, including a large patio that opens up on the south side of the house off of the main living area of the house where there is a hot tub/plunge, an outdoor fireplace, outdoor dining table, and plenty of seating. Beyond the patio, a low wall made of stone reclaimed from the property encloses a landscaped yard. Also on the property is an Olympic-sized pool.
INTERIOR
The interior of the 4,300-square-foot space is appropriately minimalist with Scandinavian influences including low-profile seating, oak floors, and durable knotty cedar walls, tying the inside to its wooded setting. The white ceiling with skylights hugging the roof provides a bright contrast against the warm walls, showering the interior with beams of light that shift throughout the day. The house is made up of several different wings, a main sleeping wing with four bedrooms, a primary bedroom wing in the east, with a central living, kitchen, and dining in the center. The lower level space features a ping pong table and air hockey table! The name “Compass House” is inspired by the changing central living spaces frequented throughout the house pivoting like a compass by the season. In the winter, the action in the house is generally situated among an east-west axis, with the kitchen in the east and the fireplace in the west. In the summertime, as the 20-foot-wide folding windows in the main space are opened to create an indoor-outdoor living space, the activity tends to rotate to a north-south axis to include the courtyard on the south-side with a pool, seating, and outdoor dining space. The name of the house is also a nod to the “ethical compass” around sustainability the owners and designer adhered to when building the house, including using durable, long-lasting green building materials and a geothermal heating system.
