Room on the first floor was horrendous (stale fried food smell, cigarette smoke and noise from cafe-bar below in plazita). When we changed to the 3rd floor on the second night, things were much better.

OK for a short stay
Staff are very friendly and helpful but speak little English so translation app or phrasebook is useful.
Double room was small but comfortable, bathroom very clean with bath/shower, toilet and bidet. No soap or hand wash provided which is a bit inconvenient, although sachets of shower gel and shampoo are available.
Restaurant is very good value but does not open till 8pm.
Good location for visiting Gibraltar.
Big downside was the VERY LOUD music from one of the bars at the back which went on till 4am on Saturday morning - take earplugs!
Hostal Carlos 1 didn't have our reservation but were very helpful finding us a room in Hostal Carlos 2 and providing a taxi for the very short distance. Our review therefore reflects Carlos 2. This is a city centre hotel and therefore you need to accept nights may be noisy whilst the fun continues. The hotel is all beautifully tiled and therefore corridor sound from inconsiderate guests is irritating. Staff were very good as was cleanliness. A good value hotel.
Basic accommodation, room was small, comfortable and clean, TV is small, air conditioning excellent and most welcome. No tea and coffee making facilities but loads of cafes near by. Convieniently located for La Linea and Gibraltar.
The hotel is ideally situated on the border with Gibraltar and is ideal if planning to spend some time in the 'British Territory' and for under half the price of staying in Gibraltar. Border crossing on foot only takes approx 20 mins, unlike travelling in a vehicle where there may be delays. Great hotel in a great location. Helios
Helpful staff, basic rooms (but clean) free WiFi, close to shops and border. Really couldn't complain. No issues with noise where I was. Couldn't beat it in terms for value for money.
We was delighted with hostel, very clean, fresh and welcoming. There was lot's of very friendly pubs, bars, restraunts and shops on the door step. Just a walk away from Gibraltar. Would highly recommend. We will definitely be going back.
It was a nice but basic hotel. I stayed a full 7 days and I had no cause to complain about anything. The room was spotless and cleaned thoroughly daily. The location was perfect for visiting Gibraltar just a 5 minute walk away. Also local eateries and tapas bars were within 2 minutes stroll from the hotel.
Generally I was happy with my choice of accommodation .

Good location
We spent two nights in this hotel as it was close to Gibraltar. It was half the price of Gibraltar hotels.
A basic clean hotel. The room had air conditioning, an excellent shower and comfortable beds. Had a good nights sleep and had no problem walking back to the hotel after a night out in Gibralter. I would use this hotel again.
Good place but a little bit noisy in the night. They cannot keep a luggage after checked out (they can, but it is at the lobby and there is no security).

Excellent for the Gibraltar border.
We stayed here to attend our friends wedding in Gibraltar. The hotel was in an excellent position for the local bars and shops and only 10 mins walk to the border. Our room although a little cheerless was overlooking a square with bars and . The bathroom was clean and modern and was sufficiently heated. The bar downstairs was not open in the mornings but it was a short walk to a choice oif bars for breakfast.
Located near the bus station, the center of town, and the border to Gibraltar, this hotel is a good base for sightseers. We didn't eat at the restaurant but it seemed okay as well. However, do not get a room in the back! The street is pretty quiet but the back is on a square with several restaurants and it is LOUD until 2-3:00 in the morning.
No towels in the room and when ask was assured they would be there on my return from a tip to Gibraltar but they were not. Had been assured that the reception staff could speak English but one clearly couldn't, however I was fortunate to have a Spanish speaker with me. There were no toiletries in the room which resulted in my having to return to the reception desk three times dealing with towels and toiletries. Further when asked what time breakfast was, I was assured it was between 7 and 10am, on arrival at the restaurant at 7am, the morning receptionist refused to believe I had been told this and breakfast did not start until 10am, useless if your flight is at 11am. However it was cheap and convenient for a flight from Gibraltar airport without paying the ridiculous amount requested from hotels in Gibraltar itself and was a 7 minutes walk to the boarder so extremely convenient for this. I will say about this hotel - you get what you pay for and that's the reason it is cheap.
If you come by ferry from Morocco to Algeciras, and just want to take a look of Gibraltar, one night in Carlos I is fine. Taxi from Algerciras to the carlos I is about 25euro, and then you may just walk 10 minutes to the border.
