A lovely stay at a charming atmospheric old coaching inn. Friendly staff and good food. Perfect for exploring the local area.

Old world hotel with basic accommodation

Pros: good food
Cons: room facilities
Location: Castle Acre Priory and Castle worth a visit
The double room we had was sparsely furnished it was en-suite but the toilet/shower was accessed via a linking corridor. Evening meal was good, bar staff friendly but the proprietor seemed more interested in her laptop rather than any guests.

Lovely old Inn, but sleep spoilt by noise

Booked superior double room, arrived to be told we couldn't have that room due to a plumbing problem. We were refunded the upgrade fee on arrival and shown to a pleasant, clean alternative room. Staff were all polite and helpful. Continental breakfast was good with plenty of choice. Had pizza one evening, which was very good. Enjoyed a couple of stunning local walks, looking around the Nar Valley and the local Priory ruins. The only major issue that spoilt our stay somewhat was the noise. The front rooms above the pub all look out over the village green and the main road that runs through the village. Our room was warm, so we opened the window at night to keep cool. I am a light sleeper so woke as soon as people began working outside very early in the morning. Aside from this, the building is generally very noisy - old plumbing knocks/whirrs, doors slamming (this could easily be solved by adjusting/replacing self-close mechanisms on doors and adding/replacing cushioned seals on all doors). Hate to grumble as this was otherwise a good place to eat & stay. We just didn't sleep very well either night, which really took the shine off it.
