Delightful french rustic studio in the Dordogne. We welcome your pet!
This simple charming rustic studio with pool and spacious fragrant garden is a great stay for one person/couple en route or wanting to explore this beautiful region of France. Its tranquil location and pace of life is just perfect to unwind and re energise with the surrounding beauty of nature and roaming wild life. Idyllically situated on the edge of a quiet hamlet over looking a vast unspoilt countryside with amazing sunsets, star filled nights along with an impressive medieval chateau nearby.
Upon entering the red gate and initially being greeted by Kelvin and I, Rose studio is immediately to your left with a glass double door. It’s actually part of our home, but has a separate external access. Inside there is a door near to the bed (s) ( locked when rented out during the holiday season ) which separates our part of the house to your space. There are locks either side of this door for privacy and security.
Once inside you will see a semi open plan layout with a separate kitchen and shower room The actual living and sleeping space is all in one, simple, yet characterful with oak flooring, aged beams of 400 yrs old and wooden furniture reflecting the natural environment. You will notice the spectacular aroma and variety of roses outside your door and window. We have a lovely variety, and during the summer nights the strong scent of wild lavender, jasmine, and honeysuckle combined creating a warm romantic ambiance!
Although we have listed a double bed only, if you prefer two single beds we are happy to change the sleeping arrangement to accommodate your needs and requirements to ensure a pleasant stay!
There is a small table with two chairs just as you enter to the left hand side of the studio with a single comfy chair and wooden chest of drawers with one hanging rack to the right. A great little area to read, relax, whilst feeling the warmth of summer through open doors! There is a single step up to the bed and sofa, tv area. Also a lovely little wood burner to take off the chill if you come and stay in the spring ,autumn or even winter! If you enjoy reading we have an assortment of books for your interest and leisure from cooking, travelling, art and biographies dotted on our shelves!
From the daily living space you will step up through door into our bright, colourful, cheerful kitchen with handmade wooden units annd oak counter tops finished with a warm terracotta floor tiling. This is suitably equipped for your holiday stay comprising of basic necessities such as fridge, microwave oven, gas hob, kettle, toaster etc please see other equipment /accessories in the amenity section. There is no freezer, but you are welcome to use ours at anytime.. don’t hesitate to ask! There is no washing machine in the kitchen, but again you are most welcome to use ours located in the barn along with a tumble dryer ( there will be a clothes horse/ dry rack supplied also).
The area is well ventilated with a fitted velux and one standard window above the hob.
The shower room and toilet is off the kitchen, although being small it is light and airy with a little quirkiness! The shower itself is twin headed with good pressure. There is also a compact sink/cabinet/ vanity unit with light. Also a velux for further ventilation as well as an extractor fan and heated towel rail.
To the left of the studio there is a designated newly laid stone patio area for your use, which is a great little sun trap, eating and barbecuing area with table and chairs and accompany sunshade!
The pool:- You are welcome to use our (10 mts x 5mts ) salt water pool ( shared with other guests ) set in our pretty, colourful, scented, informal garden comprising of lavender, sunflowers, palms and cactuses…. a sheer delight! A solar shower is near to the pool steps for before or after use. We have a great long seating area for towel drying to sit and relax after your cool refreshing swim or with the fire pit if you wish to cook a kebab with a few beers one night! There’s also a traditional pizza oven… give us a shout if you would like one for €12.00 or perhaps have a go in preparing one, or a homemade authentic Indian/ Thai curry.. we sell them!
The vine pergola is for you to take shade during the soaring midday temperature. Our grapes are ripening so hopefully you will be able to pick a bunch to quench your thirst or enjoy with a baguette, some delicious french cheese, pâté or charcuterie! Note: you may share this with other guests.
Pétanque: This is here for your leisure and pleasure and the boules are readily supplied on court.
Our magnificent Linden tree whom we’ve named Soul is a saviour when the heat becomes intolerable, a hammock and swing seat will soon revitalise you along with a cool drink, or perhaps even an iced water melon!
The inflatable jacuzzi is here for you to use and can be located through the red gate just off the pool area itself. It sits under a lovely little custom made shelter, with a spacious wooden veranda for you to sit with a chilled drink enjoying the spectacular sunsets, just feeling and being a part of nature and it’s natural countryside. A great place for those who like to meditate!
We live on the cusp of an old
farming hamlet which was originally the part of the estate of the local Chateau of Jumilhac Le Grand. Surrounding our property are the woodlands that form part of the Perigord National Park offering enjoyable walks and the chance to encounter the local wildlife ( stags, wild boar, birds of prey to name but a few. Also it’s a great area for the keen cyclist!
For those with an interest in history we are on the route of Richard Coeur de Lion who, following injury died in a neighbouring town of Chalus.
A good twenty minute walk into the village gives the basic amenities such as a well supplied mini market shop, boulangerie, boucherie, pharmacy, hair dressers, post office, fuel station, an ATM , two bars one of which offers a varied menu of local cuisine in its popular restaurant. It’s location is perfect as it’s outdoor dining area sits in front of the great chateau. This is also the site for the local Sunday market.
A 15 minute drive will bring you into our main town of St Yrieix le Peche offering a wider range of facilities such as supermarkets, restaurants and actives such music, art events and a hospital with an A&E should the need arise. A similar journey by car will bring you too Thivier which boasts possibly the best open market during the week which is best appreciated having a glass or two with lunch at the Le Foche with plenty of atmosphere and buzz!
Further a field within an hour we are mid way between the cities of Limoges and Perigueux with attractions. Perigueux in particular is a wonderful university city vibrant, cosmopolitan , oozing charm and beauty from every corner of its historic walls. This city known for its ancestral wealth and history is brimming with liveliness and intrigue through its cobbled streets and well appointed squares. Also well worth a visit to its market on Wednesday and Saturday. Limoges is renowned for its old quarter and is the centre of the french porcelain industry.
Within a comfortable drive are the attractions of the great Chateau of Haute Forte, Pompadour the famous equestrian centre, Segour - le chateau,a local medieval village, the prehistoric caves of Lascaux and the popular destinations of Brantome and Bergerac with it’s renowned wines. A days trip to Brive is well worth considering too.
If your wanting to sample France for whatever reason then this is a wonderful opportunity to explore this country, it’s land , it’s people, food, culture and rich colourful history.
Please do not hesitate to ask us for further recommendations.
