Location:
In the Seine-Maritime, a beautiful part of Normandy, and just 4km from the Alabaster coast, Château Falaises is set in its own spacious grounds, part of a small village close to Saint-Valery-en-Caux.
Dieppe ferry terminal is around a forty-minute drive away whilst other ports such as Calais, Le Havre and Caen-Ouistreham are about two to three hours by car, making this a great location if arriving by ferry or Eurotunnel. Alternatively, take the train from Paris to Yvetot.
Saint-Valery-en-Caux is the place to go for a supermarket, shops, restaurants and a Friday morning market as well as learning about its interesting history in the second world war. It’s a pretty harbour town which is filled with flowers in the summer and has lots of characterful architecture and nice places to eat. Further inland, the town of Cany-Barville has a greater choice of amenities including a lovely Monday morning market.
You are also well positioned for an 18-hole golf course (also offering foot-golf!), less than 5km away, as well as horse-riding opportunities in the area. For a unique experience, there is even a flying school close by which offers sight-seeing excursions by air!
This glorious part of the Normandy coastline, Pays de Caux, is known for its white Alabaster cliffs. The beach at Saint-Valery-en-Caux is a good place to start with its pebbly shores (and sand as the tide stretches out) partly backed by incredible cliffs.
Veules-les-Roses is one of France’s ‘Plus Beaux Villages’ with its pretty river, water wheels and thatched cottages. Head to the beach with its promenade, pier and charming beach huts – at the weekend look out for people selling the exquisite salt and freshwater oysters, Veulaise, a true local delicacy.
Saint-Aubin-sur-Mer has a large sandy beach as well as a brilliant fish market. There is also a kite-surfing school or head to the sailing centre at Plage de Quiberville-sur-Mer. Travel down the 200 steps on the famous stone staircase at Sotteville-sur-Mer or follow some of the incredible walking paths along this part of the coast.
Varengeville-sur-Mer has yet more wonderful scenery and you can walk through the famous valley between the towering cliffs at Valleuse de Vasterival. The gardens at Bois des Moutiers are also a must for nature lovers.
Dieppe is another fine day out, especially on a Saturday morning with one of the largest and arguably best markets in Normandy showcasing all sorts of regional produce. Stop off in one of Dieppe’s characterful restaurants and try fish stew, sole, mackerel or scallops.
Other great places a little further afield in Normandy include Fécamp, Étretat and the classic French seaside resorts of Honfleur and Deauville. Alternatively, head inland to discover the historic beauty of Rouen, perhaps even continuing on to Monet’s Giverny Gardens, just under two hours away.
