The Treehouse at Hakalau, Oceanfront coastal comfort

Welcome to our Treehouse at Hakalau! The only way to stay closer to the ocean would be in a boat. Sit back and watch the cruise ships slowly pass by knowing that the passengers aboard are truly envying your incredible accommodations. This quaint and unassuming second story home offers a nearly 180 degree view of the mighty Pacific ocean where you can relax and watch whales as they suddenly breach the blue water, spinner dolphins playfully chase a passing fishing vessel and the rising sun as it welcomes you to an amazing array of morning colors.

Please watch our YouTube video by searching Salt Water Hawaii The Treehouse at Hakalau!

Need more room? You can also rent the neighboring Cliffs at Hakalau - ask us if it is available for your dates. Sleeps six.

Immediately as you enter the home your attention is drawn to the vast ocean front windows and sliding glass doors that lead out to the huge deck. Here you can spend endless hours enjoying the cool breezes from the ocean, sipping on a morning cup of coffee or watching spinner dolphins and whales playfully swim by. During whale season, there may even be nights when you can hear the whales singing. The windows have blackout curtains to shade the interior and cool the house during peak sunshine hours.

The home features hardwood flooring and is well furnished with two spacious bedrooms. Both bedrooms offer comfortable queen beds and a nice size closet to store your belongings. The kitchen is immediately off of the living area with equally incredible ocean views. The kitchen comes furnished with a built-in range, full size refrigerator, coffee maker, toaster as well as pots, pans, dishes and other cooking utensils. The bathroom contains a large tub/shower combination, toilet, and spacious vanity. The ample windows in this home do a great job of allowing the comfortable trade breezes to flow throughout the home. Like the majority of homes in Hawai'i, we do not have air conditioning. We maintain a simple mindset in that when we get hot we open the windows and turn on the fan. When we get cold, we close the windows and put on socks :)

We are near Highway 19, 15 minutes to Hilo and only 20 minutes to the Airport.

Hilo is known for its warm aloha spirit, relaxed lifestyle, unique shops, art galleries and restaurants with local regional cuisine. Local attractions include Lyman Museum, East Hawaii Cultural Center, historic Palace Theatre, Pacific Tsunami Museum, Imiloa Astronomy Center, UH Hilo Performing Arts Center and Hawaii Tropical Botanical Gardens. Hilo Farmer's Market is a favorite for fresh, local produce. Merrie Monarch Festival, Hilo's premier hula competition and cultural event, is held annually. Hilo's black sand beaches are some of the best for snorkeling, diving, surfing, paddle boarding, kayaking, swimming with turtles and tropical fish, or watching the whales off shore. Take a helicopter volcano tour or short scenic drive to active Kilauea volcano to view a lava flow, ride horses in Waipio Valley or tour the summit and view the night skies of Mauna Kea.

This is a Hawaii County licensed short term rental.

great stay
we met the owners on our arrival and found them to be extremely involved and wonderful hosts, our stay was also wonderful but we did have a few hic-ups , it. seems the company in charge of supply and care of the unit was being changed so we did not receive proper responses to our requests. after we found out who the new manager was (John) he took care of everything, Thank you again John. we highly recommend a stay at the Treehouse at Hakalau. we will return.

Beautiful Views
Great quiet location outside of Hilo! Property grounds are very peaceful and the ocean views are incredible. Some of the unit had been updated which was nice. Unit would benefit from another fan/more airflow.

Great stay near Hilo
We enjoyed our four nights here, near to Hilo (about 15 m drive). This property was cozy but good for our family of three plus lots of outdoor space to run around. Important to know there is a larger property next door, which makes the experience feel less private when those guests are outside. We were mostly out and about, so ok for us.

Ocean View and Sounds!
It would be difficult to find another property with this view and sound of the breakers hitting the cliffs below. We obsessively watched for whales and saw plenty. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay!! The only thing notably “wrong” was that the main house is also a rental and it sits very close to this one. If this was communicated in the listing, we didn’t catch it—it should be clearly communicated as it changes the experience at the house. When the other guests are outside, we could see everything they do. We were fortunate as there were other guests here only 2 days of our stay and they rarely went outside. We however, were outside 90% of the time watching for whales and enjoying the amazing views! The location and property is amazing!

Quiet and Tranquil
Our stay was amazing. Watching the ocean waves and whales (in season) every morning and evening was memorable. The space is perfect for (2) couples or a small family. 20 minute drive to Hilo. Would very much recommend.

Paradise
The treehouse was magical! At the end of a cul-de-sac, gated we were in our own little world. Had multiple whales breaching and playing right off our lani. Couldn't have asked for a better place to stay on the Hilo side of the island. Central for all the sightseeing places we wanted to visit. Home came equipped with everything we needed and more. We will definitely be returning!! Mahalo!!

This is a very easy review to write for our stay at the Treehouse at Hakalau -- five stars! Easy drive to the restaurants and shops in Hilo. Amazing hikes in the state parks up and down the coast. The dark blue sky at the observatory at Mauna Kea was super cool (figuratively and literally). Don't miss Volcanos national park, and we even spent a day doing the more touristy activities and beautiful beaches on the Kona side of the island. The local food trucks are great - best smoothies and fish wraps at What's Shakin'. We also had a blast watching the humpbacks breeching and playing right off-shore in front of the deck. We just had a great time at the Treehouse! Thank you!

Beautiful Quiet Ocean Cliff House
We had a terrific time staying here! We loved watching the birds, plants, geckos, stars, milky way, and waves. House was quiet, clean, and comfortable. There's lots to do within a short drive and the owners have a lot of great suggestions. Hakalau Beach Park is a short walk away(you do have to go up and down a slightly steep trail). Also close to Akaka falls and the fantastic Hawai'i tropical bioreserve and garden. Yes, the Island of Hawaii has bugs, but here they are very manageable, and not the kind that bite(and for some of us bug bites can be a problem). The owners have left some specific practical tips for how to make the bugs even easier to manage.

Really Nice But Needs AC
We really loved this place. Such a beautiful and quiet location. You could hear the ocean and lots of birds. It was lovely. However, the sun shines in the two sliding glass doors and it’s above a parking area. It got really warm. Well, I’d even say hot. Sweating hot. We ended up getting another room elsewhere for one night because it was so hot. It really wouldn’t cost that much to add a window unit or portable ac unit. Or at least have blinds or curtains over those glass doors. It really needs it to be comfortable. Otherwise, it was nice and had everything else one might need.
