El Pastor is situated in an outstanding valley in the Parque Natural of the Sierra de Grazalema 7km from the village, in a secluded rural position at an altitude of 600 meters, with the nearest neighbour a few minutes walk away.
El Pastor is built on the site of an old mill and bakery and its focus is the river which can be seen from most of the windows. The accommodation is simple and typical of farmhouses and mills in the area, there is a good internet wifi connection.. The garden is planted with native plants including rosemary and lavender. There are various outside areas where one can relax and a short path takes you to the river (which powered the mill), where a waterfall has created a natural plunge pool and waterfall which is perfect for swimming in, on hot summer days. This mountainous area is perfect for walking, cycling and bird watching. Scops Owls, Golden Oriels, Griffon Vultures, Black Kites and Bee Eaters have all been spotted close to the mill.

Lovely rural retreat
Delightfully situated property beside a stream in lovely countryside. Very comfortable and well equipped. The open fireplace was a welcome source of heat in the cool March evenings. Our host, Jack, responded very quickly to sort out a couple of minor issues for us. Recommended - we would certainly stay again.

Comfortable house in stunning location
We love being immersed in the natural environment. Everything you would need for relaxing stay. Good kitchen, books, lovely outdoor spaces. Access would be hard for anyone with a disability, however lots of opportunities for hikers, cyclists, bird watchers, artists. Highly recommend if you love nature.

Hidden Gem
Great rustic location away from the busyness of Sevilla and yet close to the wonderful Grazalema. Plan to use your GPS to locate the entrance! We really enjoyed our time over holy week and the processions. Fortunate to have great weather. If you are looking for an authentic rural experience, this is your place.

Stunning location and beautiful house
El Pastor is an amazing hideaway in the hills. It was so exciting walking down through the trees, across a footbridge over the river, and having the gorgeous old house revealed nestled in such beautiful scenery. The house was full of character and very clean and well-equipped, and we loved sitting out on all the different terraces at different times of the day. The stone floors were refreshingly cool in the day but we found ourselves a bit chilly at night - thankfully there were plenty of blankets around and a big fireplace in the living room, although I'd definitely bring slippers next time! The plunge pool and waterfall is a 20 second walk from the house and was such a luxury to have in the back garden - the sounds of the river carry through the house in a wonderfully soothing way. Amazing wild flowers around the house as well. A truly special place that we can't wait to return to!

Charming rural retreat
Adorable, renovated home in the hills outside Grazalema. Artistically decorated with attention to detail everywhere. Kitchen included all the cookware for homemade meals for a family & the dining area was lovely. The rooms were a tad chilly at Xmas (rain), but the sound of the stream was beautiful & the electric blankets kept us cozy. Gorgeous setting! Unique and very memorable rural getaway!

Beautiful Location
The setting and location of the house is gorgeous. You hear nothing but the soothing sounds of the creek and see the beautiful trees. It's like a secret oasis - especially in an area that can be very hot. Unfortunately, as many other reviewers have mentioned, the insects are a real problem here. There is a section of the house that has beautiful moorish paneling, but it is open to the air and all insects can and do come in. Additionally, the house needs some attention. Some of the windows were filthy on the outside - covered in debris and spider webs. One of the couches was dirty and smelled bad so we covered it with a sheet to sit on it. The floors need re-glazing and the pots/pans either need a good scrubbing or to be replaced. The yard needed raking and there was palm tree that blocked the stairs to get from the bridge up to the house. We ended up leaving a day early as the insects just got too bad - there were multiple giant spiders, a giant hornet that got into the house and a large scorpion on the bathroom rug. My husband got tons of mosquito bites. Plus moths would land on my Kindle and get in my hair when I was reading in bed. at night. Grazalema is beautiful village in a stunning location. There are tons of amazing hikes and we enjoyed our visit to the area. I would pay twice as much to stay at this house if it could be brought up to a higher standard.

Even better than the photos
This property is a true gem. It's a great place to relax and decompress. The property itself is delightfully decorated, has all of the basic kitchen equipment, and quite comfortable for a group (we had 3 adults and a child in our group). It's outside of the village, so you will definitely need a car.

We all loved walking across the bridge across the river up to the Mill. It was just as expected outside but the inside was an added bonus very quirky and beautifully presented. We really enjoyed staying there.

Enchanted Cottage in the Woods
This is an enchanted cottage in an area of spectacular and unique beauty in Spain. The sound of rushing water in the nearby stream, and songs of birds from daylight to dusk contributed to a very relaxing stay surrounded by nature and much more green than I had expected (the area is noted for its high rain fall). Goats, sheep and cattle dot the countryside. I loved the large and well-equipped kitchen and outdoor patio where we ate every night. We appreciated the extra care with which this place has been put together: moorish screens, local woolens on the bed, moroccan rugs and blankets, modern bathroom with lots of light and heated towel rack. The nearby village of Grazalema is charming. Bring hiking boots, poles, rain gear and sun gear, sweater, water shoes (for the grotto) and a good book (no TV here but we did listen to classical radio station). You definitely need an SUV-type car as there are back roads that are rutted and paved surfaces drop off to driveways and unpaved roads that would bottom out a regular passenger car. While the paved roads are in good condition, they are very narrow with lots of switchbacks and views from steep mountainsides. The area is popular with motorcyclists. This is an area of extreme incline in local roads, hiking trails and the site of the village. The cottage is accessed by rocky path and the cottage is on several levels, so you need to be fit enough to do stairs and steep hills. The local tourist office in the village was very helpful in providing suggestions for hiking trails. We. could easily have spent a week or more exploring trails and other nearby villages and are seriously considering returning next year. The longer we stayed, the more it grew on us. This property is only an hour and a half from Sevilla. It would be a perfect place for a family vacation or to come with another couple for a rustic stay in the country.

Wonderful hideaway in the foothills; reasonable driving distance to the Pueblos Blancos
Highly recommend this property for those, who, like us, need some true getaway/hideaway time either during, or perhaps, for all of your trip through the wonderful Andalucia. The property is as rustic as it needs to be while also being nice and stylish enough - plus well hidden - in a good way. El Pastor certainly has plenty of space inside and out. We were just two, but a family or a group of friends would find this home more than capacious enough, with all the necessary accouterment. The constant sound of the running natural pool/swimming hole and stream that runs through the property is a delight. The weather was unseasonably cooler when we were there beginning of June (we were fine with that!), so we weren't brave enough to jump in - if the weather had been hotter we would have certainly taken the plunge. The nearby town of Grazalema is charming, and you're within striking distance of all the Pueblos Blancos and while we didn't head to the coast on this trip, you could certainly reach it from El Pastor. Other than a bit of trouble with lack of hot water in the shower (it ran out rather quickly), we heartily recommend El Pastor as it looks even better in person and is a special place.

Absolutely amazing setting and property
This place really has to be seen to fully experience. The walk down the trail from the car park and across the foot bridge makes it feel like you are entering a fairy tale. The house itself is well appointed and has everything you could need. Our kids had a great time playing in all the nooks and crannies around the property. It should be noted that another VRBO property (the other restored mill you can search for) is directly above this property. If someone was staying there the immense privacy that the trail in provides would be compromised. Although I still think the various outdoor sections of the the house would still allow you to be by yourself. All in all, the place was amazing and the highlight of our trip to Spain. It did rain a lot in mid April which we now realize is pretty normal. The bedrooms got kinda cold at night due to the weather but the electric blankets more than did the trick. The electric heaters and fireplace upstrairs kept that portion of the house cozy. I'd like to come back for a month later in the spring!

Idyllic, peaceful and perfect!
What a fantastic week we had staying here with our 3 children (11-17). Communication with Jack before our stay was great and we arrived late Saturday night to be met at taken to the villa, which was spotlessly clean and really well equipped. Waking up the next morning, we were astounded at the surroundings- the stream gushing through the grounds and the plunge pool, the trees and wildlife- it is a fantastic, peaceful hideaway. The addition of wifi was super for our teens, who also loved the plungepool and exploring the stream and rocks. The villa is really well furnished and decorated, and the shower is amazing. Constant hot water too, and the washing machine was useful especially as clothes on the airer dried overnight. Definitely need a car as it is 20 mins to the village along quite windy roads, but I'm a first time driver abroad and managed fine. Grazalema itself is a delight with numerous really good restaurants and bars, and the square is super to sit with a drink and relax. We visited Ronda and Seville, both were superb- had many plans to explore further but the villa was so peaceful we chose to sit on one of the several patios , read and just enjoy the surroundings. We loved the dragonflies, geckos, and lizards that we saw, and the little bat that slept each day under the house as we walked to the plungepool. Part of the house is built on huge rocks- it's spectacular! Highly recommend this villa, we would love to return. Thank you Jack for sharing this lovely home.

Amazingly beautiful, relaxing, even better than described!
We had a wonderful stay here. The place itself was even better than we expected. The location is fantastic, right next to the river. The house is perfect and had everything we needed. The location within the Sierra de Grazalema is also perfect. Only about 15 minutes drive away from Grazalema, which is a very beautiful town and very easy to navigate, unlike some of the other towns we drove through. We did a hike in the park everyday and could have done way more had we stayed longer. The park is breathtaking. We recommend this place for sure!

Idyllic, quiet and in an amazing surrounding
This was one of the highlights of our Andalusia-trip! We (german couple, mid 30ies & one baby) stayed for 1 week. The accomodation combines the feel of a authentic old mill with the comfort most people we know would appreciate to have (washing machine, gas heating supplementing the open fire place, microwave, kitchenware, nice hot shower etc.). We visited in April, so it was not too hot outside, yet - therefore we were not so much in need for the still pretty fresh bedrooms, where we slept very well with the sound of the little creek passing the house. We came with our 11-month old boy - for whom we felt the bedroom was a bit too cold in the night - so we let him sleep in the living room. He really loved exploring the balcony. Jack, the owner, was very friendly, showed us around in the beginning, was very quickly available when we had a question and otherwise left us to enjoy the place by ourselfs.
