Dory Buff House

Dory Buff House is perfect for you if you’re looking for an authentic, non-touristy Newfoundland outport experience.
Built in 1847 with its signature hipped roof, Dory Buff House was fully renovated in 2015, keeping much of the original woodwork intact including walls and floors.
Coco and Dave welcome you to historic Dory Buff House, uniquely situated on the sunny side of Bonavista peninsula, steps from the Atlantic ocean and a commercial stage, in the quaint working fishing harbor of Summerville, aA 2.5 hour drive from St. John’s, 25 minutes from historic Trinity and scenic Port Rexton; 45 minutes from shopping in Clarenville, and 50 minutes from the Bonavista lighthouse.
The main floor has a fully equipped kitchen with electric range/oven, fridge, dishwasher and microwave; laundry room with washer and dryer; dining room; living room with TV (cable and wifi); main floor guest bedroom with a queen bed, and a ½ bath.
On the second floor, look out over the ocean from your king bed in the master bedroom; full bathroom with shower; and a 3rd bedroom with bunk beds, also facing the ocean.
Throughout Dory Buff Coco's original artwork adorns the walls. Enjoy a quiet afternoon in the back garden picking blueberries, or take a walk along any of Summerville’s beautiful coves and beaches where sea glass and other treasures abound.
Depending on which part of the year you’re visiting, watch breaching humpback, fin, minke and killer whales from the comfort of the front bridge (Newfanese for ‘deck’). Walk down to the fishing stage to meet the local fishermen and see the same tools of the trade, and fish cleaning and salting techniques Newfoundland fishermen have been incorporating for 500 years.
For bird lovers, you’ll be surrounded by blue jays, sparrows, crows, seagulls, osprey and bald eagles to name just a few. The fishing stage is a big draw for seabirds looking for a free feast following the filleting of cod caught daily in Summerville harbor. Stop by the stage and who knows, a kindly local fisherman may just gift you with a couple of filets of fresh caught north Atlantic cod!
Pets are welcome along with their responsible owners. Please be vigilant about scooping, and with Newfoundland's ever-changing weather, we ask that you give them a good towel-off before entering the house on rainy days or after an ocean plunge :)
Dory Buff is perfect for you if you’re looking for an authentic, non-touristy Newfoundland outport experience.
Summerville maintains the same unique traditional charm it has had for hundreds of years. Locals refer fondly to the area as being a "festival free zone." Our sincere desire is that your friendly, respectful, discreet interaction with the locals will keep it that way! Thank you! Coco and Dave

The home retains its original steep central staircase which may not be suitable for young children or adults with mobility issues.
Please park on the gravel in front of the house, near the trash bin. We live in The Quarters next door (99 Harbour View Dr).
Dave works out of his shed at the back of the property and is available to answer any questions you might have.
Dory Buff is a historic home that has been thoughtfully restored. Please treat the home with gentle care.

Very special house…
David and Coco’s place in Summerville is exquisite. They have maintained the spirit of the place perfectly while adding all the amenities you might need. (The master bed is incredibly comfortable. Best sleep of our lives.) It’s on a dead end road in a beautiful cove and so is very peaceful but within striking distance of Bonavista, Trinity and all the other very busy spots on the peninsula.Dave and Coco also give their guests a very thoughtful guide to the house and area. Can’t recommend enogh.

Family trip to Summerville
Our family of 11 rented two properties together and loved every minute of it! This is a beautiful quaint and authentic NL home with a stunning view of the bay and Jiggin Head. The hosts were available to answer any questions and helped to ensure our stay was perfect! Thank you so much Dave and Coco we would love to come back! Cheers

Beautifully restored 19th century house
This comfortable and well-equipped house in peaceful Summerside made for a wonderful few days midway through our family tour of Newfoundland. It gave us a chance to recharge after busy travel days through Gros Morne and the Great Northern Peninsula, and Twillingate. It is a good half hour to Trinity, so not for those who wish to be a hop skip and jump from restaurants, theatre, etc., but a great spot from which to do a day trip around the Bonavista Peninsula, including hiking the Skerwink trail. The king-sized bed was super comfy, as was the the queen in the “guest room”. The bunk beds are smaller than twin-sized, though, and not really suitable for bigger teens or adults.

Summerville stay
This is a fantastic well kept property. that had all we expected and more. The only disadvantage is that it's a bit far away from Trinity, Port Rexton, and Bonavista, where most of the restaurants are. But lot's of hiking trails nearby and tons of blueberries if you go in August.

Exceeded Expectations!
Our stay here at Dory Buff was outstanding. The accommodations exceeded our expectations of being authentic and non-touristy. Dave and Coco have created a beautiful experience for us in an exceptionally CLEAN, authentic and well appointed home even with its 175 year old heritage. We often experienced the milk of human kindness during our weeklong stay from our hosts, other visitors, and local shopkeepers. This big land is a not-so-hidden gem for travelers seeking a peaceful holiday surrounded by natural and historic beauty. We hiked on the many trails that hugged the rugged shorelines of the Bonavista Peninsula and words simply cannot describe the grandeur. Thank you! We'll be back!

Great stay in Summerville area!
We had a great 3 night stay in this charmingly decorated historic house! It was very well set up for our family of four including two teens, and my older parents. Bedroom and a half bath on ground floor worked well for them. The kitchen is well appointed and has everything you would need for any length of stay. Perhaps an extra chair in the living room for those who have older kids, so everyone can sit and chat. It was lovely weather so we were outside most of the time when at the house. The kids enjoyed a hit of the Xbox! The fisherman were busy when we were there in August. Dave and Coco are great hosts and just next door if needed. They have done a wonderful restoration of the house and we loved the sea glass art. Would recommend to anyone looking for a place to stay to explore that side of Bonavista Bay, and it is very convenient to Trinity and Port Rexton as well. Thank you and have a wonderful rest of summer!

Amazing Get Away
We used our beautiful stay in Summerville to explore the Bonnavista Peninsula. It was a quite, comfortable and charming place to stay. The quite sounds of the Bay, the light breeze off the ocean, the morning coffee and evening wine on the patio, it was what everyone needs to recharge and appreciate life. The check in was easy, the place was very clean and well equipped, the beds were comfortable and it's tastefully decorated. Just needed to turn off your notifications and relax. We would love to return and would recommend this stay to anyone traveling to the area,. Brad and Family

Beautiful property! It was a step back in time. The modern amenities did not detract from the rustic charm, comfortable beds, and quiet peacefulness of the community.

Wonderful Historic House
We had a wonderful stay in this historic home. It was clean, cosy and had lots of character. We enjoyed having several meals in the the home during our stay - including using the charcoal BBQ. We also enjoyed the hospitality in the area, spending time in Bonavista, Trinity, Port Rexton and Elliston. We had great day on the beach in Elliston! We took our dog and that worked very well. The place is very pet friendly! I would definitely recommend this place and would stay here again!
