LOCATION

The Borders region is the ideal location for a short break and truly has something for everyone!

Cornhill-on-Tweed itself has a wonderful village shop and the local hotel has a bar and excellent restaurant. Coldstream, just minutes away, has a larger supermarket, choice of takeaways, petrol station and of course the Guards Museum!

For lovers of outdoor activities, the surrounding countryside provides loads of opportunities for walking and cycling with good hill walks and mountain biking tracks in the area. The Cheviots, Northumberland National Park and Kielder Forest are all lovely places to visit.

There is salmon fishing on the River Tweed and for golfers, there are excellent courses at nearby Coldstream (5 minutes away by car) and Kelso (10 minutes) plus there is an off-road driving centre near Duns.

The area is rich in history and the walled city of Berwick-upon-Tweed (only 15 minutes away) makes for a great day out. There are lots of castles to explore too including Etal Castel, Floors Castle and of course, Alnwick Castle, which is a must for any Harry Potter fans!

There are also abbeys at Melrose, Selkirk and Dryburgh and it’s fun to visit the fascinating Holy Island of Lindisfarne which you access by driving over the causeway. Just make sure that you plan well for the tide though!

If you’re keen to visit a city or to hit the shops though, it’s only 45 minutes to Edinburgh and 60 minutes to Newcastle.

If only housekeeping had checked....
We were left without....tea towels, kitchen towel or paper towels, dish cloth, no newspapers or kindling to light the wood burning stove.... disappointing in light of the dip in temperatures whilst we were there. There were no hand towels for the bathrooms and there was only a teeny amount of soap in the dispenser. We tried to heat up a ready meal....no casserole dish.

Weekend away
Reason for down grading on line listing is that I had to put in that 3 people were staying to get 2 bedrooms. We have often stayed in the area and enjoy it. We came into the area for a Christian weekend conference. It was very convenient for the place it was held. However we would have expected there to be a cafeteria, proper teapot , milk jug and sharp bread knife. We realise we are 2 elderly ladies and that younger people probably do not require these items. Arm chairs were low for our requirements but in goo condition. We did have the dining chairs. We enjoyed the outside area on our first evening in the warm sunshine.

Fabulous little cottage!!
We stayed at Pelhaven cottage for a week in October and enjoyed it very much. Spotlessly clean, very well appointed and really cosy. Particularly enjoyed the log burner a real focal point and the underfloor heating in the bathroom!! Also great communication with Stuart and a lovely welcome pack when we arrived. Although Cornhill is tiny it has a really amazing family run store, their home baking is to die for and I would highly recommend that you support it when you stay. Great Indian restaurant in Coldstream and the Beson Inn was good too. Plenty of places to go so makes a good base we particularly enjoyed Melrose, Kelso and St Abbs. Would definitely recommend and would be very happy to return.
