The Poet's House
PLACE+AMENITIES:
This the Mansion of poet Marcoras built around the year 1600, a truly unique property historic family home steeped in history!
Located on a plot of 2,800 square meters, at the mansion built of stone there is a residential building with a total area of 410 sq.m. most covered terraces.
The building consists of four (4) independent houses (Two-storey house with 2 ground floor houses).
The estate with the 4 houses (my parents live in the one house to offer you any help you may need during your stay), is at the top of the village with a garden of 1.400 square meters with absolute peace and privacy and it has the marvelous panoramic view of the mountains.
It has a wonderful private and gated garden overlooking the Corfu hills with free-safe parking 1.000 square meters
This is the perfect spot for all ages,a large family or group (yoga) looking for privacy.
The property is on the south coast of Corfu, 17 km from Corfu Town.
The airport is 17km away, and the nearest ferry (running to Venice, Bari, Ancona, Trieste and more) is 20km away. Car rental is recommended and can be arranged by the hosts.
The whole property sleeps up to 18 persons in 6 bedrooms and 3 living rooms with double beds, single beds and sofa beds. Cribs are available if needed. The maximum occupancy is 6 people to each villa.
Well set up for a multi-family stay, there are full equipped kitchens and family-sized dining areas indoors and out. A welcome hamper contains local products and a few essentials (milk, juice, bread, butter, marmalade, cornflakes, coffee, tea etc) and a welcome brunch or dinner depending on your arrival can be provided to make a stay easy.
If you don’t want to cook, meals from the local tavernas and pizza joints can be delivered.
We love the estate feel, ideal for a trip away with another family, and the fantastic outdoor space of approximately 1.400 square meters, where all the group can relax.
You can enjoy evenings with friends and family around the BBQ corners.
Outside the house you can find meditative places full furnished for lunch, outdoor dining.
Hammocks to relax and lay in the sun or in the shadow under the trees and umbrellas and iron bed if you want to sleep in the garden!
Active kids will love the space to run or to play at a ping pong table. Racquets and balls are provided. Also there are plenty of toys for kids under 10.
The atmosphere is quiet and peaceful with a beautiful garden full of roses.

HISTORY OF THE HOUSES:
The first floor apartment of 110.00 square meters was used as a residence and hermitage of the Poet as well as a place to be visited by various friends such as Dionysios Solomos Mantzaros, Iakovos Polylas and various other Solomic poets.
The Marcora Mansion has kept in the best way the cultural heritage of the area with respect to its history, carefully keeping in a special place the coat of arms, its seal, distinctions from kings, titles from the secretariat of the legions, manuscripts, personal belongings of the poet etc. The office of Gerasimos Markoras is located in the same place.
Inside the poet's mansion, the frames and paintings depict not only the history of that time, but also the family tree of the family. The frame with the poet's brother, Spyros, who served as ambassador to Russia, is typical, while his letters to the tsarist government are among the most remarkable relics of the archive.
For hundreds of years, the ground floor was the warehouse of wine, olive oil, potatoes and other agricultural products.
It was the place for the production of grapes from the cultivation of vines that was located in the rest of the free part of the garden of approximately 2,360 sq.m.
Also there was the olive press for the extraction of oils from the privately owned estates of Marcoras.
The other ground floor apartment was the place of residence and feeding of the various workers that were necessary for the various works.
We are the 4th generation descendant of Gerasimos Markoras and since Poet’s House is in our loving care, we decided to renovate the house in order to preserve the inheritance for the local community. We will be happy to welcome you in my 400 year old village mansion, where my forbear, the Corfiot poet Gerasimos Marcoras (1826-1911) lived and wrote most of his poems.
The Marcora family (Italian Marcoran) is one of the oldest aristocratic families of Corfu, coming from Italy in the middle of the 15th century.
The first Marcoras held the post of knight and family was written in the Libro d’Oro of Corfu, bearing the coat of arms and the title of Count.
poet Gerasimos Marcoras was born In 1826 and he was a student of Dionysios Solomos and partner with Nikolaos Mantzaro.
