The Lion Winchcombe.
There are a number of issues with this hotel.
The checkin seems a bit casual and offhand. There is no credit card authorisation to cover any extras.
Most of the staff are delightful but some are very offhand at times
However, it’s a quaint real-feel local pub with a good restaurant and some rustic hotel rooms and serves a fine breakfast.
These further comments relate to our experience of room 2.
The challenges of bathroom access (low ceiling and step entry) are clearly products of the age of the building, which is also part of its charm, of course. However these features might be a serious physical challenge to some and this could be made clearer at the time of booking.
There are some issues of substantive concern in a hotel of this star rating.
The liquid stain on the carpet in the room, the overpowering smell of cigarette smoke when you enter the room, the mould in the shower, the leaking toilet cistern when flushed, the TV remote control that periodically loses contact with the TV and the battery cover for the remote that falls off every time you pick it up and which we eventually had to fix with a Band-Aid. Because of the rooms location over the bar it is pretty noisy at night until after 11pm.
Would I go to the lion for dinner and a beer if I was trapped in Winchcombe for a day…yes definitely.
Would I choose to stay in room 2, not so much.
