Period cottage in idyllic riverside location in prime Cotswolds village

Step back in time in this period cottage in a beautifully preserved Cotswolds village. Riverside Cottage is a classic stone village house in Lower Slaughter, one of the most sought after villages in the Cotswolds. Lower Slaughter was the location for the recently released adaptation of Jane Austen's "Emma" and you will recognise the bridge in front of the cottage. Built in the 19th century, the cottage has an unrivalled position in the heart of the village, being situated right by the river Eye and south facing. The village itself is unspoilt, being a conservation area and there has been little or no development in over 30 years. You will see from the many old photographs of the house on our walls that very little has changed in 100 years. There is no better place to enjoy the evening sun than strolling around this village, with the gentle lapping of the river.

Riverside retains many of its original features such as beautiful open fireplaces, beams and wooden floors. The kitchen and bathroom are equipped in traditional style - there is an everhot cooker and heritage bathroom fittings.

The cottage was purchased in October 2018 and has only been prepared for rental in early 2019 with lots of new equipment. There is an emphasis on luxury at the cottage with all beds benefitting from 100% pure goose down duvets and pillows and White Company bedlinen and towels. New Boleslawiec crockery has been provided to add to the cottage feel and Arthur Price cutlery.

There are 36 inch new TV's with built in DVD players in the living room and both bedrooms. Unusually for a holiday rental, the living room TV additionally has a SKY connection with the Entertainments and Sports packages. A good wifi also allows for netflix movies to be downloaded.

There are two quality hotels in the village which offer high class dining - and a bar in the Slaughters' Inn. Stow on the Wold and Bourton on the Water are only 2-3 miles away and provide ample shopping and further eating as well as take-away choices. The Lords of the Manor Hotel at Upper Slaughter can be reached via a delightful walk across the fields.

There is a wealth of interesting attractions in surrounding towns and villages including the mill museum in the village, Snowshill Manor, Batsford Arboretum and Sezincote House to name a few. For animal fans, the Farm Park at Naunton or the Cotswolds Wildlife Park at Burford make pleasant afternoon excursions. Cirencester and Cheltenham are also within 20 miles.

We enjoy many walks in the area but particularly like walks to Belas Knap long barrow and a deserted Roman villa off the beaten track.

Please feel free to call me on +447767 368697 if you would like to hear more about the property.
During your stay at this cottage, you'll be within walking distance of Old Mill. Enjoy your stay with amenities like a kitchen and a fireplace in the cottage.
  • The cottage offers a kitchen, a washing machine, and a fireplace
  • Just a 4-minute drive from Bourton Model Railway Exhibition and a few minutes from Cotswold Motoring Museum
This cottage offers its guests barbecue grills and a garden. The front desk is open around the clock.

This Cheltenham cottage is smoke free.

We truly loved the area. The house was well equipped. Nice neighborhood. Clean kitchen, bathroom comfortable beds. Only thing, the downstairs carpet sure needs to be changed and I didn’t get check in instructions on time. Had to find the phone number in the app and call host to get check in instructions. Once I got of hold of Sophie she was very helpful and apologized for the inconvenience . Otherwise we enjoyed Lower Slaughter

Cotswold adventure
Our place was absolutely adorable! We had everything we needed. The kitchen was well stocked and we made dinner each night at our place. I loved the cook top because the food cooked beautifully. Never seen one of those ranges before. The neighborhood was so peaceful. What a way to start off our vacation! The host stopped by to meet us. We had no trouble with our quaint cottage!

Everything about this property made our Cotswolds stay feel so magical! From its location right next to the river, to the cozy backyard which is perfect for eating lunch and reading a good book, and the beautiful kitchen with its view into the backyard... This property is perfect for anyone wanting a cozy getaway in the Cotswolds.

Splendid property, perfectly situated for countryside walks and proximity to quintessential Cotswolds towns. Very comfortable beds, steep staircase so may not be appropriate for older people, wonderful spot!

Old time
This place was very charming and in an excellent location. very charming, clean, etc. The only things to watch out for are: The stair are small and steep. It was fine for us, but an older person of someone without great balance may not want to stay there. Because of the location (in a charming old village) it was hard to find when we arrived. It was fine, but you you need to arrive after dark make arrangements to have the host meet you.

This cottage is lovely and is in a beautiful location. The surrounding area is wonderful and the cottage is charming, with comfortable beds. As mentioned in the description, the stairs are steep and would not be suitable for someone with mobility issues, be we were fine with them. Our only issue was that the tub floor is better suited for a sit down bath than a standing shower. We all felt a bit off balance in the shower because the tub floor is not flat, but rounds up the sides quite a bit. Everything else was great, and the hostess is helpful and responsive. We'd love to stay again.

charming cottage in a delightful location
Title says it all, or almost. An enjoyable stay. Minor points: slightly tired air to some of the furnishings, stains in the carpet etc. points to note: The stairs are very steep and narrow, especailly in the quarter twist in the lower set. The property has no dedicated parking. There is a limited amount of public parking near the church, but this can quickly fill up in eak season, in which case impossible to park anywhere near. The key safe is very fiddly.

Quintessential Cotswold village
The property was lovely with a sweet garden and in an ideal position by the River Eye. I have only given 4 stars for cleaning as it was clear that only the bits on show were cleaned eg around the back of the taps (which I cleaned before I left) and behind furniture where there were cobwebs and dust. For the price paid, I would expect a higher standard although clearly one is paying for the perfect location. However, it was very comfortable with good quality furnishing and the beds were the most comfortable I have ever slept in at previous cottages (of which there are many) with high quality duvets and bed linen. The lighting in the lounge was very dull and I borrowed a lamp from one of the bedrooms to cheer up the corner near the dining table which helped a bit. The carpets were stained throughout the cottage, even upstairs. Also disappointed that there weren’t just a few complimentary logs for the fire. There were also no cleaning agents to help keep everywhere clean so I resorted to using one of my bars of soap to clean the surfaces in the kitchen and bathroom. Despite the above, I didn’t want to leave and hope to return in the future.

Steep stairs
The stairs are VERY steep, not suitable for children or elderly people. The Everhot oven not really suitable although looks nice in the kitchen, takes far too long to heat up. Having said that, a beautiful clean and tidy cottage.

Idillic Cottage in the most beautiful village
Diane was an excellent host. Check in couldn’t have been more simple and the property was outstanding. Full of character, clean and tidy! The welcome manual made it easy to navigate around the vintage appliances (e.g The Everhot). We felt incredibly lucky to stay in this property in that location- perfect if you’re attending a wedding at The Slaughter Manor, or if you are just wanting a slice of the Cotswold life. Hope to be back one day - thank you so much!

Picturesque location
Beautifully presented little quaint cottage situated in the picturesque village of Lower slaughter. Ideal location as it was central to many of the places we wanted to visit. An added bonus of being able to take the dog on some lovely walks right from the doorstep. Took around 40 minutes to walk to Burton on the water. Cottage was well equipped, it took us a while to get used to the oven but it all added to the experience. All in all a lovely holiday, thank you.
