Arriving in Los Angeles

The Los Angeles International Airport, more commonly referred to as LAX, is situated less than 20 miles southwest of downtown Los Angeles, with easy access via I-105 and I-110. Most of the major domestic and international airlines service the airport, including SkyWest, Delta, Virgin America, United and American Airlines. LAX is the world's fourth-busiest international airport, which some people find intimidating. If you prefer airports that are a bit smaller and quieter, book a flight into the John Wayne Airport instead. Getting to the City

Once you land at LAX, you'll find plenty of ground transportation options. The airport's free shuttle service can take you to the Metro Green Line Aviation Station or the Metro Bus Centre if you prefer to take public transportation. If you make prior arrangements, you can use a share-a-ride, private car or limousine service to take you to your final destination. Many of the area hotels offer free shuttle service to and from the airport. Travellers arriving at the John Wayne Airport are best served renting a car to get into the city. Most of the major car rental companies are located onsite, including Alamo, Avis, Budget and National.

Los Angeles Weather

Expect most, if not all, of your stay in Los Angeles to be sunny and warm. Summertime temperatures rarely exceed 18°C, and winter lows do not usually dip lower than 9°C. Nights can be cool, however, so pack your suitcase with lightweight clothing that you can layer to accommodate any fluctuation in the weather. Los Angeles gets very little rain, and what it does get tends to fall between December and March. It's so little, however, that it's not even worth packing an umbrella.

Things to do in the Los Angeles Area

Even if you spend a full week in L.A., you won't have enough time to see everything Los Angeles has to offer, but you'll be able to pack a lot in. If you have access to a car, spend some time driving around the Beverly Hills area where many of the top celebrities reside. If you don't have a car, there are plenty of tour companies that run buses by celebrities' homes. Take a stroll down Rodeo Drive and do some window shopping at Prada, Gucci and Valentino, and be sure to stop at the Pacific Seafood Grill for a latte or a light nosh. Head over to Hollywood to see the famous Hollywood sign, Madame Tussauds, the Brown Derby and the Walk of Fame. If you're travelling with children, set aside at least one day to go to Anaheim, home of Disneyland for a holiday none of you will forget.
