Two beautiful weeks at Villa Melitini
This is an extraordinary property which, most importantly, is located on a gorgeously looked after piece of land. The gardens are delightful, and we fed ourselves day after day from the tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, figs and fresh herbs growing on the extensive, landscaped plot. Before arriving we had worried about the 'salt water' swimming pool. In truth the salt levels are very low; just enough to avoid the high use of chlorine. The result is a big very refreshing pool.
The layout perhaps needs a little explaining. The ground floor is a self contained apartment, with the two floors above also self contained. Which is why there are two kitchens, but the open door between two makes it a single house. (I only clocked it could be two dwellings about four days in.) As there were 14 of us, we used the downstairs kitchen, because of its access to outside, though it was handy to have the extra storage and equipment from the upstairs kitchen. As to the rest it's exactly as shown: a whole bunch of tidily appointed bedrooms and bathrooms, a huge upstairs living area with very effective air-conditioning, complete with a huge TV with built in Netflix/ Amazon prime access.
The 4 rather than 5 stars for location is because this is not a manicured part of Crete. Souda is a working town. The beach nearby is not one of the most picturesque but the locals gather there for this reason. The two tavernas are fine. But you are within a ten minute drive of the very heart of Chania old town, and very close to the national road which makes access to the grand beaches at Episkopi and so on, exceedingly reachable. And once through the automated doors you are in your own piece of heaven.
