Built in the sixteenth century, Leopold Castle was the home of The Grand Duke of Tuscany "Leopold II" for many years. The same family has owned the castle since 1860 and in the beginning of the 1900\'s it was carefully restored with the close supervision of the Monuments and Fine Arts Office. Transport yourself back in time as you enter the Castle's main door that leads into an impressive entry hall enriched with oil paintings and furnished with a significant 18th century wooden table. At the end of the entrance hall and to the left, there is another sitting room with a fireplace and a bar in the corner. This additional intimate living room is richly furnished with an antique chest, two very comfortable sofas upholstered with rich damask fabric, and a TV with international channel SKYTV and DVD player.
On the right hand side of the entrance hall is a luminous and ceramic-tiled dining room, where guests can enjoy breakfast, lunches and dinners.
The first floor can be reached via two staircases: One to the left and one to the right of the entrance hall. The staircase to the right of the entrance hall is a grand structure furnished with two antique suits of armor. It leads to the impressive Grand Duke’s bedroom (Suite 3). This suite looks out onto both the front and rear gardens, and is painted cardinal red. It also contains antique furnishings, including a 17th century headboard, bookcases and grand piano. This second staircase also leads to two other suites (Suites 1 & 2), one overlooking the southern garden and the other with a view of the northern garden.
At the top of the second staircase is a lovely suite with a large terrace (Suite 7), decorated in a soothing shades of green. Near the suite there are two double bedrooms (Rooms 5 & 6) and another suite (Suite 4).
Descending this staircase, to the right at mezzanine level, there is a small lounge equipped with comfortable sofas. Wi-Fi access is available throughout the whole castle. Continuing downstairs, there is a double bedroom (Room 9), a junior suite (Suite 8) and a staircase that leads to another junior suite (Suite 10) in the attic. This room features exposed wooden beams and a commanding view of the landscape.
There are another 3 Queen bedrooms and 2 bathrooms in another section of the castle.
On entering the rear garden of the Castello, via the glass doors at the end of the entrance hall, there is a well-kept rose garden and lawn area with comfortable outdoor furniture. It is an ideal place to enjoy a cool drink during the hot summer evenings. To the right, there is another area with chairs, tables and canvas umbrellas where one can have breakfast or dine during the summer months, or perhaps even have lunch during the first warm spring days.
Below the garden, in an enclosed area, is the swimming pool (open from mid-May to the end of September). The swimming pool overlooks a terraced olive grove and, during the hot summer hours, is shaded by centuries-old, maritime pine trees. Near the pool is the hot tub.
All the bedrooms are equipped with air conditioning, mini bar, private safe, TV, and a courtesy kit with shampoo and bath soap. The bathrooms are all hand painted with travertine marble. Each is equipped with hairdryers and a full set of bath towels.
Guided tours can be arranged for the Ruins of Populonia, or Medieval villages like Bolgheri and Castagreto. Other organized activities include golfing, horseback riding, cooking classes, hot air balloon rides, wine tastings and tours, massage, tennis, visits to outlet stores such as Prada and Gucci, boat trips to Elba and Giglio Islands and even purchasing hard to get tickets to Palio, the world famous horse race in Siena. Activities are not included in the rental. Without leaving the property you can enjoy the beautiful pool area with jacuzzi.
