The Mechanics - Unplug and unwind in your very own cabin in the woods.

The Mechanics house includes a generously sized open-plan studio room with a king-size bed, a well-equipped kitchen, dining and living areas, and an industrial-style bathroom featuring a claw-foot bath, toilet, and vanity for your relaxation. Unwind while watching the fire burn on the elegant Chesterfield lounge and savour the moment as life passes by. Whether you are planning a romantic escape or seeking a peaceful work retreat, this home provides everything you need. Enjoy complimentary Wi-Fi, overhead ceiling fans, and a fireplace – making it your year-round home away from home. The Mechanics House remains a significant part of the town's history, reflecting its vibrant past. Restored using authentic local materials, the house showcases original weatherboards and ironbark floorboards. Inside, a datum rail has been skilfully crafted from recycled floorboards sourced from the original dance hall. The bathroom housed the Australian Made Lister motor and copper generator, alongside the original fuses and power board. Initially, a power line ran from here to the old sawmill. At its core, the Mechanics House features a wooden insert covering the original vehicle maintenance pit. The stone retaining wall surrounding the house is made of Brooman River Stones. The steps leading to the rear verandah are constructed from Brooman silt stone. Adjacent to the Mechanics House, there stands a 3000L galvanised iron rainwater tank. Visitors to the Mechanics House often marvel at the intricate craftsmanship and attention to detail evident throughout the property. Each room tells a story of the town's industrious past, from the hand-carved wooden beams to the meticulously restored features. The house offers a glimpse into a bygone era while providing a few modern touches for comfort and relaxation during your stay.
The Mechanics House is not just a relic of history; it is a vibrant part of the town's present and future. As the town continues to grow and evolve, the Mechanics House stands as a steadfast reminder of its roots, a place where the past and present seamlessly intertwine. The property is completely off grid and powered by a central solar system with underground 240V power. Water comes from the pristine rain that falls from the sky, collected and stored in galvanised iron tanks. Hot water is heated b y instantaneous gas water heater located on the outside of the building. The old town site is set opposite a large bend in the Clyde river. Deep water extends from the bend nearly kilometre upstream. It is a great place for canoeing, fishing for Bass, Platypus watching or simply listening to the dozens of unique and beautiful endemic bird species of this area. There is a resident mob of Eastern Grey Kangaroos that typically come out at dusk. Red Neck Wallabies dart about the place. There are also Bandicoots, micro bats, blue tongues and Possums. The buildings date back to the late 1800’s to early 1900’s and once supported a thriving community of up to 200 people employed in the timber mill. Brooman had a post office, school, dance hall, mechanics building, galley, general store, phone exchange and cottages like the Lemon Tree for the saw mill workers and their families. Please note linen may be supplied as an extra bundle to your stay. This is not provided in your nightly rate.
