Historic Federal Period brick mansion on fabled Chestnut Street, Salem, MA

The Saltonstall - Tuckerman House is a breathtaking brick Federal Period mansion built in 1810 and first occupied by Leverett Saltonstall, the first Mayor of Salem and scion of one of the oldest and most prominent families in Massachusetts. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, it resides on historic Chestnut Street, which has often been called one of the most beautiful street in America. Still the premier residential street in Salem, Chestnut Street was laid out in 1800 as the street on which some of America’s first millionaires, many of whom were shipowners, merchants, and sea captains engaged in the China Trade, would build their mansions. The house is prominently featured in a number of books on architecture and is famous for it's three story suspended spiral staircase. The current residents are only the third family to reside in the house since it was built over two hundred years ago.

The approximately 6,000 square foot house has six large bedrooms, three and a half recently renovated bathrooms, a beautifully renovated kitchen with a Vulcan restaurant stove and cherry cabinets custom built by a furniture maker who has made pieces for the White House, a butler’s pantry, an amazing formal dining room, a children’s playroom, a laundry room, a wisteria-trimmed sunroom, and a library. All of the period details remain, including exquisite wood work and moldings and ten fireplaces (regretfully not available for use by guests due to their age). There are high ceilings and large windows throughout (unlike many other antique homes for rent, which often have some of their bedrooms in low ceiling height, small window upper floors that have been converted from attics or were once servants quarters) The house is gracefully furnished with lovely antiques, Persian carpets, etc., While many visitors exclaim that the house should be a museum, they find it warm and welcoming, not stuffy.

There is a lovely yard and garden and a gas grill for outdoor cooking.

The house is in a historic residential neighborhood on the edge of downtown Salem, within walking distance of the city’s many wonderful restaurants and shops, tourist attractions, America’s oldest museum, the Peabody Essex, the waterfront, and the train to Boston, which takes 25-30 minutes.

The opportunity to stay in a home like this rarely presents itself.

During your stay at this vacation home, you're just a quick walk from Pickering House. Features include laundry facilities and a library. The vacation home includes amenities such as a jetted tub and a kitchen.
  • The vacation home offers a kitchen, a washing machine, and 3.5 bathrooms
  • Amenities include laundry facilities and Library
  • Onsite recreation includes tennis courts and a playground
  • Just a 5-minute walk from Pickering House and 5 minutes by foot from Hamilton Hall
This vacation home offers its guests a library, barbecue grills, and a garden. The front desk is open around the clock.

A slice of the good life

We could not have enjoyed staying here more. The photos show an elegant and comfortable grand home, but they don’t hold a candle to the reality. The home was so elegant and so comfortable. We were a group of 11 friends coming for a magical weekend in Salem and the home became the centerpiece of our time (and photo shoot) in the best possible way. I hope I get a chance to say somewhere this beautiful again soon. Salem was beautiful and this home was a privilege to stay in as we explored her wonderful history.

Beautiful large historic home in Salem

Our family traveled to Salem for a wedding. This home is huge. Pictures don’t do it justice. Beautiful antiques, art and carpet. Plenty of room for everybody. The sun room is amazing and so comfortable. Perfect location in Salem for walking around town. The owner lives in the home and meets you at check in to discuss some of the characteristics of the home. This is my first Vrbo where the owner actually lives there and packs a bag to leave when you arrive. Because the owner lives there it was a challenge unpacking your suitcase and finding space for your items because the dressers were full of personal items. There was a rolling clothing rack provided where you could hang up your clothes in each room. Sometimes I wasn’t sure what items I could use in the house and what things I should not touch. I felt like I was staying in my very friendly uncle’s home instead of a vacation home where I could just unpack and chill out. Due to the age of the home, there is no central air conditioning. However, there are individual units in each room as well as fans that help keep the rooms cool. Once I got over my own apprehension about touching things, we relaxed and thoroughly enjoyed the home. I would highly recommend staying here if you are an antique lover or a history lover, because this location and this house cannot be beat.

Great Home for a Big Family Celebration

We were looking for a home that could accommodate my extended family for a weekend that culminated in my son’s graduation from Tuft’s. Close to everything Salem has to offer, this gracious historic home with the fabulous sunroom is thoughtfully appointed and the kitchen/bedrooms/bathrooms had everything we needed. Rich was excellent with communication. He met us at the home when we arrived and we toured the home together while he educated us on its history. He also gave us some very helpful advice about negotiating Logan airport because some of us were arriving late Friday, or recommending nearby restaurants. Check out was easy. We had two Octogenarians in our group and the 2nd floor rooms accommodated them well. We did not have any family members under the age of 21. Everybody enjoyed the home. Salem is such an interesting and vibrant town. It was a wonderful weekend. Highly recommended. Thanks, Rich!

Fabulous Halloween tri.

This was the PERFECT place for our visit to Salem for Halloween. Very quiet, quaint, old residential street. About a half mile walk to the hubbub of the downtown festivities. Lots of trick-or-treat kiddos that we enjoyed handing out candy to.

Stately home in quiet historic neighborhood

We rented the home during a wedding for my siblings in their 70s and some of their adult children. They aboslutely loved staying there. The neighborhood is within walking distance of all the Salem craziness but well insulated from it on Salem's oldest historic residential street. The home is 200 years old with some quirks but with a modern kitchen and bath facilities, appointed with traditional furniture in comfortable spaces. There is no central A/C, but there are plenty of fans and enough window units to make sleeping comfortable. Rich is a very accomodating host and could not have been easier to communicate with. It is a home, not just a house, and my family was honored to share it.

Prettiest street in Mass.

Beautiful historic home is a great walk-to location.11 of us slept comfortable, although we had an additional 8 for catered dinner one night. An 1810 house obviously doesn't have center a/c but many fans were available and we managed during a heat wave.

Good location in a historic home

We were so excited about this home — on a famous street, large enough for our family and walking distance to absolutely everything. It does not have air conditioning and it took us approx 24 hours to get the house to cool down with fans. The coffee pot was not cleaned and was growing mold so thank goodness for Grubhub and Instacart to deliver coffee and needed food easily. The house is packed with the owners items. But overall the house was in a good Location and we were on the go most of the time sightseeing in the neat town. We did love the historic ness of it all and my kids loved it!

The property was lovely and clean. It was just a short walk to down town witch tour as great. The small children in our party a good at listening so I worked out good even though there are valuables everywhere. So if your children are prone to destructing things maybe not a good option. Loved the place!!
