Rustic vintage cottage in Duck Cove with limited ocean view.

Rosewood Cottage is situated on 2 wooded acres, located on the “Quietside” of Mount Desert Island. The property is secluded, set away from the road and directly across the street from the ocean. There is a ocean breeze with a limited view of the water and Swan’s Island which is a short ferry ride away.

A small brook runs beside the property offering the sound of running water in the spring that becomes a trickle by the dog days of summer. Newly constructed this spring is a 400 square foot deck that wraps around the back of the property offering an ideal spot to relax.

A short walk to the ocean, the house is minutes from Acadia National Park and approximately a 20-30 minute drive to Bar Harbor. It was built in the 1940’s and much of the cottage remains intentionally unchanged. If you are looking for a rustic, authentic, vintage summer cottage, built by native Mainers on Mount Desert Island, in a quiet location, away from crowded tourist areas, this is your place.
During your stay at this vacation home, you'll be close to Wendell Gilley Museum. A kitchen and a fireplace are available in the vacation home.
  • Air-conditioned home with kitchen, washing machine, and fireplace
  • Just a 3-minute drive from Acadia National Park and 5 minutes from Seal Cove Pond
This vacation home offers its guests a garden. The front desk is open around the clock.

Rose Cottage at Duck Cove
The VRBO pictures and description were accurate. We entered via the back door with a key as instructed by email. When we opened the front door, an alarm sounded and we didn't know how to turn it off. A few minutes later the alarm stopped; maybe the owner was notified? A laminated info sheet in the cottage would be helpful, listing wifi and alarm information.

Perfect for location!
We had a great stay! Also enjoyed the patio fireplace on the deck but we did spend most of our day time sight seeing but loved the location. Just a couple of things. Maybe add another mirror in bedrooms and extra propane tank available. This is an older home and does have a musky smell. We just opened up the house windows.

Overall great, some hiccups
Location was perfect for us to explore all parts of the island, and quiet with room for kiddos to play outside and all spread out at the end of the day. Darling older cottage, and we appreciate the original hardwoods, trim, loft space and quirks of a historic home. The updates including the bathroom and lovely back deck were a bonus. The main issue we had was with the cleanliness (or lack thereof), and feeling like everything was dirty. We opened windows for evening fresh air and dirt/debris/bugs were caked in the sills and on the windows themselves. The refrigerator had visible mildew inside on shelves/trim, and on the water/ice dispenser. I had to clean it just to feel comfortable putting sealed food in it. The dishwasher and kitchen counters were equally grimy. The kitchen was generally well-stocked, though there are only three bowls, which made for extra rounds of washing dishes for our family to eat breakfast each day. We did appreciate the washer/dryer and detergent availability, as well as access to extra bedding and plenty of towels. I likely wouldn’t stay again unless I had communication back from the host acknowledging my feedback about cleanliness, which I haven’t, though it definitely has potential if it’s managed better.

The house was not updated or perfect but it provided a comfortable place to rest after busy days hiking and site seeing. All the amenities worked well. And the location was good for our family.

This was a great location. Close to Acadia and Bar Harbor. The property was clean and perfect for 4 adults. There was room for 6-8 people. Checkin and out was easy. The back deck was lovely for morning coffee and an evening glass of wine.

Had to Move to another property. Water not working.
Location was exactly what we wanted but when we arrived the water was not working. Maybe there was a leak because the house was damp and musty. We had to move to another one of her properties that was an hour away. The other property was actually nicer. There was no hair dryer and I didn't want to buy one because I don't need one at home. The washer is up so high we had to drag a ladder found in a closet to reach it.

Cottage Needs attention
The small cottage was located remotely which is what we were looing for. It was a 20+ min drive from the carriage trails on the other half of the island. Hodgdon seafood is two miles up the road, AWESOME local resource for your seafood needs while visiting. On the negative side.... Upon arrival everything seemed very dirty & grimy. My wife cleaned the kitchen and bathroom with bleach. She washed the pots, pans, dishes, utensils, and bed linens. The toilet had a leak as did the front main window when it rained. The ice dispenser in the fridge had black mold all over it. The kitchen ceiling showed significant water damage. Not sure I would go back until some of these issues were addressed.

Great Stay
We had a great time at the house with our young kids. The attic bedroom was perfect for them, and while not a large or luxurious house overall we thought it had plenty of space for hanging out, eating, and cooking together. The deck and back yard are great, and we enjoyed being set back off the road. The place was remarkably well stocked compared to other VRBOs we've stayed at. Communication with the host was good. We'd definitely stay again if we come back to MDI!

House was cute and clean. Loved being on the quiet side of the island. We saw deer in the front yard every morning and a few turkey as well. Also could hear some coy dogs howling at night.

Quiet cottage with lots of character
This was a perfect place for our family to call home while visiting MDI. The layout of the home was perfect for our 4 teenagers and us. We really appreciated having the washer & dryer right there for us to use. We would have really enjoyed using the outside gas fire pit on the deck but unfortunately the mosquitos were horrible while we were there, so we didn't spend much time outside.

A beautiful quiet stay near Acadia!
My family and I had a lovely time at this home! We loved how it was in the quiet areas of Acadia, away from the busy more touristy Bar Harbor. It was close enough to enjoy all the park has to over in just a short drive. We loved exploring the town of West Tremont as well! The listing is accurate to the home - it is a cottagey, cozy feel - and has only the essentials. There is "2" rooms upstairs as listed, but be aware, you must walk through the loft room to get to the 2nd room, so less privacy. We loved the outdoor patio/firepit! Overall, we enjoyed our stay and it was everything we needed! :)

Great stay for a family
We enjoyed staying at this cottage. This cottage was clean and well stocked with everything we needed for a comfortable stay. Although a bit of a drive to most Acadia trails, it was so nice having quiet place to come back to after a full day of hiking. We loved the privacy and ability to have a bonfire in the back yard.

Good Value for Average Accomodations/Location
Place was very clean with lots of updates amenities inside. There are really 3 bedrooms. One has a queen bed. The other has two singles. There is a full/double sized bed upstairs that is in an area just outside the bedroom. We had an issue with the TV being stuck in "store mode" so we could not stream any channels and there was an annoying banner on the bottom of the screen that would not go away. Despite being a smart TV, the smart functions did not work. We tried connecting to the internet to stream and also tried to cast our phones to the TV but neither worked. Bring a laptop and HDMI cord as I don't think the TV can be taken out of store mode. There was no remote for the TV to attempt to get it off store mode. Host did offer to reimburse for a new remote but I didn't want to hassle with it. Host did refund some money for the TV inconvenience which was much appreciated. Washer and dryer worked great as did all other appliances. Cannot comment on AC though as we never needed it. Overall, nice quiet place on southwest side of the island. Host was VERY responsive and accommodating. I would recommend this property.

Weekend fixer upper!
All went great with booking and communication with host. Upon arrival the first thing you see is a semi broken front door but the key is for the back door, going inside there is a very overwhelming smell of mold or possibly cat urine, not sure but we actually tried to rebook somewhere else but everything was sold out, further as you look around it seems very unfinished with a lot of poor carpentry. I could go on but I really don’t like leaving bad reviews in the first place.

Disappointed with the accommodations. Curb appeal and first impression are not good. Clean inside. No soap in the bathroom or face cloths. Moldy coffee grounds left in coffee pot. Property needs some basic TLC.

Had a great time for 4 people
The property was clean and had clean towels and sheets. No garbage from previous people anywhere. The living room was strangely modern with a bunch of video games which was pretty cool! Caveat was that the second bedroom was not actually a “bedroom”. It’s a space with a bed in it. The pictures made it look like the second bed (not the twins) were in a private room but the room with the twin beds can only be accessed from the upper loft where that second bed is. If you are in a party that doesn’t need the extra twin beds, and 2 beds is enough (like 2 couples), then you won’t have an issue because the second floor is pretty secluded from the first. However if you are in need of 3+ beds, only the master bedroom and the twin bed room will have privacy. Also had trouble with the key to the front door and only the back door key seemed to work. Might have been me though I didn’t spend a lot of time trying to wiggle it. Overall a nice place to stay while visiting Bar Harbor or Acadia!
